Series: Sugartown #1
Author: Carmen Jenner
Release Date: November 3, 2013
Synopsis

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft
place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen-year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a
six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode
into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more– no really, Ana
bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s
just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear.
Secrets that won’t just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk,
too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to
breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an
overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton
womanizing cousin, the ex from hell, and more pies than you could poke a
… err … stick … at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

If there is one Australian author who understands how to make me laugh, cry, shout, and swoon, it is Miss Jenner. I have loved her Sugartown series from the very beginning, and I am more than thrilled to say that being back with Elijah Cade & Ana Belle in this latest installment has been absolutely fantastic!

This couple has had it difficult from the beginning, to say the least, and even though they love each other more than anything, their pasts are still lurking in the background, waiting to rear their ugly heads again. And the question is if they can find a way to move forward, once and for all, instead of always waiting for a bomb to explode.

Elijah, who holds a very special place in my heart, is, however, ready to take their relationship to the next level – and no, I will not reveal what that is, sorry – but he feels rather insecure about how Ana will react. He continues to doubt her wanting to stay with him, and he is filled with a lot of insecurities about himself as well.

Ana, on the other hand, has definitely become stronger in many ways since her attack a few years back, but Elijah’s cagey and rather suspicious behavior makes her doubt if she will ever really be enough for him! And so the roller coaster starts again…

Now, I cannot write this review without mentioning how much I really like how Miss Jenner shows us a more mature side to her writing skills this time. Please do not misunderstand me: there are still plenty of great laughs in this book, and some really embarrassing, yet endearing, moments, too, and I would definitely not be without them, but it honestly seems to me that there is a more serious tone of voice to this book than we have seen before from Miss Jenner.

Both Elijah and Ana have grown up a lot since we last saw them, and I really enjoyed seeing how they have evolved in many ways. Furthermore, due to the hardships they have to endure this time, they finally realize the ways to be strong for one another – whenever it is necessary, of course. Meaning: they are still pretty nutty, and so adorable that you will never get enough of them, but they come to understand the truly important matters in life. That is how I feel, at least.

I think I have mentioned this before, but one of the best ways to explain if I have truly loved a book is if I keep thinking about it days after I have finished reading it. I miss Elijah and Ana so much right now, but I still feel that their turbulent love story has come to a perfect end. But why am I not giving the book five stars? Well, to tell the truth, I wanted to see a bit more suspense, or angst, as Ana and Elijah are confronted with the fact that her attacker is back in town. In short: I would have liked seeing a few more scenes when Ana is forced to confront her issues some more. It is so difficult writing this review without giving you any spoilers, and I am sorry if you feel confused about my reasoning. Read the book, and then make up your mind – reading is, after all, subjective!

“Greetings From Sugartown” has become a favourite book of 2014 for me, and like I stated above: there are lots of laughs, drama, and angst as is the case with the previous books in the series. Oh, and some very steamy and hot sexual encounters – phew! They will definitely make you tingle in all the right places. Need I say more? No, I think not. *wink*

If you have been a fan of the Sugartown Series from the beginning, just like me, I am absolutely positive that you will love being back with the whole crazy gang again! I loved practically everything about this book – especially some of the funnier moments when Holly and Jackson make an appearance – and I loved seeing Elijah and Ana finding faith and trust in each other. They are, plain and simple, perfect for another – but they are not perfect themselves. However, that is what makes them seem so real: it is so easy to relate to them because life is messy out in the real world, but there is always hope that things will fall into place. And that is a comforting thought…

Miss Jenner, you have done it again! I loved being back in Sugartown, and even though I am sad to leave – for now, at least – I am uplifted by the thought that I can always come back: because I know that I will read your books many times in the years to come. ❤

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review

Carmen Jenner has done it again: she has made me laugh hysterically, bawl my eyes out, clutch my stomach and (almost) made me throw my Kindle down in frustration. Nevertheless, she has also made me sigh happily and swoon over certain parts in this second instalment in her Sugartown series.

Since reading “Welcome To Sugartown”, I have been anticipating getting inside the head of “the crazy ranga midget” – a.k.a. Holly Harris, best friend to Ana Belle. I have always wanted to see beneath her tough exterior and I must say that Miss Jenner has succeeded in showing the reader who the real Holly is.

And what a mess Holly is…Barely twenty years old, pregnant, hormonal and, first and foremost, scared out of her mind. Her parents threw her out when she told them about her pregnancy, and she now lives with Ana, Elijah, and her arch nemesis, Jackson Rowe. These two share some history – which will be fully revealed as you read the book – and they are completely crazy characters. They fight all the time, but they cannot deny the extreme sexual attraction they share, even though they both fight tooth and nail to ignore it.

“Every moment with Jack can be boiled down to games, and taunts, and who is coming while coming out on top. For the first time since we met, I don’t want to play anymore. ‘You win.’” (Holly)

Like I mentioned before, Holly is terrified of becoming a single mother – after all, the father of the baby, Cooper, left her to follow his dreams in Sydney – but she is determined to become the best mother possible. You have to admire her for not putting her child up for adoption, for wanting to take responsibility, and I could definitely understand her reactions and actions, even though some readers will probably frown upon them. But that is the best thing about books: what we think of the same story is entirely subjective. This does not, however, mean that I did not want to shake some sense into Holly sometimes…Oh, how I did!

And do not get me started on what a douche Jackson tends to be! Yes, he is charming. Yes, he is gorgeous. Yes, he can be vulnerable. But is he also a typical guy? YES! Conclusion: I wanted to throttle him for some of the things he said and did – but, as with Holly, I could also connect with him entirely throughout the book, and his feelings of doubt and hurt about Holly’s pregnancy seem to be pretty valid and…well, normal, I suppose, for many men in the real world.

In case you are wondering: yes, both Holly and Jackson show some redeeming qualities, and they can be incredibly sweet towards one another when they are not fighting. But both of them will have to learn acceptance, forgiveness, and how to allow themselves happiness instead of doing what they think is the right choice. In short: they have to learn that it is okay to follow your heart in everything instead of listening to what your mind is telling you to do.

“She laughs and fuck me it sounds like birds and springtime and all that other fucking bullshit Disney feeds us.” (Jackson)

Carmen Jenner excels at telling her readers a story filled with lots of drama, sadness, heartache, steamy sex scenes, and, ultimately, an unconventional happy-ever-after. Her characters are perfectly imperfect people, and the town of Sugartown and all its inhabitants seem so real that you almost wonder if this place does exist. (Sadly, it does not…I have checked.) I love how we see flawed and stubborn characters because these are traits that we all – to some extent – possess, even if we refuse to acknowledge them. We get to see Bob, Ana’s father, and Sammy, her little brother, again – and poor Bob and Sammy…my heart broke on more than one occasion for these two…and that is all I will say about it – you will have to read the book to find out what I mean *wink*.

I would also like to add that it was wonderful to see a seemingly happier Ana Belle & Elijah Cade, but they do not take the focus away from Holly & Jackson’s story – so yes, I loved when they made an appearance, but I was completely focused on our crazy redhead and stubborn mule, and my adrenaline really picked it up a notch or two in the last 20% of the book.

So to conclude my review, I would like to say that if you are wondering if “Enjoy Your Stay” is just as good as the first book in the Sugartown series, I will have to say: yes, it is. It is different, as all sequels should be, and Holly and Jackson are completely different characters from Ana and Elijah, but that is also at it should be. You will find yourself going from crying your heart out on one page to laughing hysterically on the next. And I really think that you will find yourself empathizing with all the characters, even Chelcie and Cooper, at some point while you are reading this book. And that, my friends, is why I love this author to bits: she makes you fall for all her characters even though you know it, on some levels, is wrong. Miss Jenner: I still wish we could all move to Sugartown and I cannot wait to see how you will torture us in your next books in the series!

Fuck.

The way she’s looking at me right now just makes me want to bend her over and impale her on my cock. I lean in and smell sex on her. Not sex, exactly, it’s just Holly’s sweet, sweet scent, but she’s definitely aroused, or has been. Fuck. If I get my hands on that little cock-sucking emo shit again I’m gonna throttle him for messing with my woman. And yes, I’m aware I just called Holly-fucking-pain-in-my-arse-Harris my woman.

Jesus Christ. How the hell did I dig the hole so deep?

I lower my lips to her cheek and whisper, “He get you off like old times, Hols?”

She pulls back and glares at me. “Fuck you, Jack.”

“My room or yours?”

“Very funny,” she snarls. “I need a shower.”

She stalks toward the bathroom, but I loop my arm around her shoulders and pull her back into me.

“No,” I whisper in her ear, and grind my Johnson against her arse, “you need to be fucked, sweetheart. Long, and hard, and merciless.”

She lets out a breathy moan.

“And I’m just the man to do it,” I say and start easing her back into my room. “Here’s the thing you don’t realise, Hols. That might be Coop’s baby inside you, but he couldn’t ever satisfy you the way I can. You need a man, darlin’, a man who’s not afraid to get under your skin and piss you off, and give you a damn good fucking hiding whenever you need it—not a boy who wants to dress up and play house. The only housekeeping you need is for you to be on your knees, cleaning my cock.” I whisper, as I trail kisses down her neck before gently pushing her back on the bed.

Here is the excerpt, ladies!

Enjoy!

“Hey, where are you going?”

“I have to take a shower.”

“I thought we were going to talk about this?”

“No. You said we were going to talk, I don’t remember agreeing to anything.”

“Like you didn’t agree to coming just now?”

“Fuck you.”

“What the fuck, Ana? Why are you fighting this so god damned hard?” he shouts and I spin around, stung by the harshness in his voice. “I can see how much you want me. I can feel it. Fuck me! I can’t stand in the same room as you without feeling the longing seeping out of your pores, and you’re still refusing to acknowledge the fact that you’re still in love with me.” The surprise I feel at that last confession must be written all over my face because Elijah comes closer, until he’s staring right down into my eyes and says, “Yeah, you can drop the fucking act, baby girl. I know how you feel about me, the question is, why don’t you?”

“You need to stop pushing this. Stop pushing me!” I shout. “Yes, I still love you, but you tore my heart out, Elijah! You left me broken in a million fucking pieces! You don’t get to be the one to put me back together.”

I storm into the bathroom. Slamming the door behind me, I quickly undress and slip underneath the hot spray. I’m too numb to cry and, despite seeing myself shake like a leaf, I don’t feel a thing, not the sting and burn of the water against my flesh and not the fresh wound gaping in my chest.

I let it go too far. I let him in again, I think, as I lean my head against the tile. My chest hurts, my head hurts. I feel like I’m made up of millions of tiny exposed nerves, all trembling and clamouring at once with the aftershock of being prodded by sharp implements. I feel raw. There’s no other way to describe it. How many times can we do this to each other before we realise we’re completely broken with no chance of ever being put back together?

I don’t know how long I stand there, letting the water soak me to the bone, but sometime before it turns cold I hear the shower door open behind me. I whirl around and find Elijah there in the cubical with me, the spray soaking his clothes.

“Get out!”

“No.”

“Fine then, I’ll get out.”

“No. You won’t,” he says as he pushes me back against the tile. “You’re not making this decision for us.”

“Jesus Christ, Elijah, how many times do I have to push you away before you get a fucking clue? How many more times can you stomach hearing that I don’t want you, that there is no more us?”

“Bullshit! The only reason we aren’t together right now is because you’re too fucking stubborn to admit how you feel, because it might mean being hurt again. Well guess what, baby girl, life is all about hurt. From the day we’re born to the day we die, we fucking hurt and we cry and we pick ourselves up and, if we’re really lucky, we have people to help us pick up the fucking pieces.”

“You think I don’t know this shit? You’re not the only one who knows hurt, Elijah, so quit with your fucking world weary patronising.”

“You know hurt, huh? Then why the hell are you putting us through more of the shit?”

I shove him up against the glass and then clench my hands into fists to keep from scratching and clawing at him until there’s nothing left. “You did this to us! Not me. I’m just trying to deal the best way I can. I’m trying to save myself from you, because if I give you what’s left I’ll have nothing leftover to pick up when you leave again.”

Last, but not least, here is the giveaway, ladies.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review

To say that I liked this book would be an understatement – I LOVED IT! It has everything that I look for in a book: romance, sassy heroine, alpha male, heartbreak, smart-ass best friend…the list goes on and on.

Let me start by telling you a little but about our heroine, Ana: wrongfully labelled the town slut – which, by the way, I will NEVER understand some people do, but the world is cruel – she longs to spread her wings and leave her home, Sugartown. She is, however, almost resigned to the fact that she will live there and bake her pies for the rest of her life. It is the typically small, boring town filled with narrow-minded, opinionated people that, sadly, exist everywhere.

Obviously, being a 19-year-old in such a town can hardly be easy. What is more sad is the fact that Ana had to grow up at a very young age – she was only 13 when her mother died, leaving a heartbroken father that soon fell into the clutches of “The Dragon”: a woman not much older than Ana, actually, who set her sights upon him and got pregnant very quickly. Needless to say, Ana’s father was not a very smart man. The only good thing that came out of it is Sam, Ana’s adorable six-year-old brother, who she has practically raised herself since the day he was born.
Ana works in her mother’s pie shop, baking and selling pies all day long, side by side with her best friend, Holly, bored out of her mind and dreaming of better things to come.

Then enters our tattooed, rough-around-the-edges, bad-boy, Elijah Cade…He is just what every mother warns her daughter to stay away from, of course, and exactly what every girl dreams about.

“The t-shirt he wears is fitting and black, and there are tattoos almost everywhere. Oh, sweet mother of god. I’ve never wanted to lick anyone’s bicep before, but even from across the street I can see how edible this guy is.”

“His eyes are such a deep, dark chocolate that they’re almost black and I think I see the first hint of a dimple when he gives me a bemused smile. Dimples, for crying out loud! Like he wasn’t already perfect enough with his lashes and his leather and his freaking melty dark chocolate eyes!”

Well, enough said about Elijah’s gorgeousness! Elijah is…well, a man filled with secrets is, in my opinion, the best description for him when we first read about him. He has no family, no connections, no ties to anything – except to his motorcycle. He moves from town to town, always on the run, never looking back. He takes one look at Ana, though, and almost immediately wishes for another kind of life.

“Holy mother of whoring nuns she’s hot. Fuck! I haven’t just crossed the border into boner territory, Mr Happy’s erected a tent from my jeans and is setting up camp there.”

“I’m not the guy who stays in one place long enough to have a second date. When they’re seeing proposals and picket fences I’m checking out of shitty motels and watching road signs turn to dust in my rear-view mirrors. I’m practically married to that white line. So why the hell can’t I walk away?

From Ana’s point of view, Elijah is quite the conundrum: one minute he wants her, the next he tries warning her away from him. It does not take long, though, before this couple is burning up the pages with their sizzling hot chemistry – I am almost blushing while writing this review – and everything seems to look great for their future.

Then BAM! Some serious and scary bikers from Elijah’s past turn up when he least expect it and then things start spinning out of control in Sugartown. I refuse to tell you more: suffice it to say, this book is NOT what you expect. It is, plain and simnple, so much better.

Ana is a wonderful character: smart, sassy, strong – she refuses to let the town and it’s population hold her back. And even though she, at one time, almost breaks, the key word is “almost”. Yes, she feels extremely hurt, vulnerable and damaged, but with time she gets back on her feet. My Heart literally broke for her a time or two, which, to me, says so much about the author’s ability to engage her readers.

“I’m much too psycologically damaged for someone like Elijah. He’s a man who clearly likes to fuck women and I’m a broken girl who can’t even crawl outside of my own head long enough to allow myself this one shot of happiness.”

Elijah is very alpha, very cocky, but so vulnerable when you really get to know him. His past, when you finally get to read about it, really makes you feel deeply for him. Yes, he makes mistakes, yes he can be really stupid – but he is REAL. And I love how the author has made all the characters believable – even the secondary characters such as Holly, Ana’s father and her cousin, Jackson, feel very real to me. A side-note: I am positive you will love Holly – at first, she seems like such a very free-spirited, fun type of person (which she is) but she has hidden depths and is a wonderful friend to Ana. And Jackson…? Well, let me just say one word: man-whore. 😉 (Or maybe that is two words, actually…)

You are almost getting winded while reading the last half of the book, at least that is how I felt. Even though I finished it a few weeks back, I can almost feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins again while I am writing this. The pace of the story is perfect: you have the slow build-up when you get to know Ana & Elijah – then the really fast-paced, scary part of the story when you are biting your nails, tearing your hair out, not knowing how this couple will get its HEA. And THEN we get to the final part of the book when everything finally falls into place, and you are sighing, swearing (in a good way, of course) and swooning…Yes, another book filled with emotions has seen the light of day.

I was left with a massive book hangover after having read “Welcome To Sugartown” and even though I was sad about the fact that the ending is rather abrupt (there is no epilogue), it does not really matter because there are two more books in the series coming to us!

Miss Jenner, I want to live in Sugartown with you, Ana, Elijah, Holly, Jackson and all my Fellow Sugar Junkies! This first novel of yours is one of my favourite books of all time, and I cannot wait to read your next book, “Enjoy Your Stay”. Just thinking about the kind of mischief Holly and Jackson will get up to makes me giddy! 🙂

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carmen Jenner Author Photo

Carmen Jenner is a thirty-something author, doctor, pilot and CIA agent.

She’s also a compulsive, flagrant prevaricator who gets to make things up for a living.

While Sugartown may not technically exist, Carmen grew up in a small Australian town just like it, and just like her characters, she always longed for something more. They didn’t have an Elijah Cade, though. If they did, you can be sure she would have never left.
