SYNOPSIS

When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family.

A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family.

A band of brothers where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood.

When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood.

I’ve spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt.

My name is Daniel Johnson, and I have betrayed everyone I ever loved.

This is my story—if you’re screwed up enough to want to read it.

“You gotta let go now, Princess. I gotta hand you over.”

Her panicked gaze meets mine. “He’ll shoot you.”

“No, he won’t.”

“Yes, he will.”

I smile down at her. “What are we just gonna stand here forever, you in my arms, your dad holding a gun to my head? If he shoots me, he shoots me. Ain’t nothing I can do about that, Princess. At least I’ll know I did one thing right.”

She takes a deep, shaky breath. “I’d be dead if it weren’t for you.”

I nod, because it’s true. If Slayer hadn’t come at a deal, Prez would’ve eventually killed her, and he’d have tortured her some more first. “Promise me somethin’?”

“What?”

“Get on your feet and then get the hell outta here. Prez will come looking for you again. He’s not a guy who likes to lose. Take as much money as you can, and get the fuck away from this life, otherwise you’re gonna wind up filling a body bag way too young.”

Lauren is wrenched away from me then. She screams as the Italian carts her off toward the clubhouse, flailing and slapping at him despite her injuries.

“Daniel!” she screams, reaching out toward me as he struggles to get her inside. Without thinking I take a step forward, but I’m attacked from behind. My knees go out from under me and I’m shoved face-first into the ground. Some heavy motherfucker sits down on my back. I buck, trying to unseat him, but I’m whacked in the back of the head until I stop.

“Well, isn’t that fuckin’ touching? The Angel scum, in love with my daughter? Didn’t I warn you away from her once before?” Slayer asks, circling me like a predator circles prey. The biker using me for a chair shoves his gun against the back of my skull.

“Yeah, I did,” Slayer continues, and he motions for the guy on top of me to force me to stand. I’m dragged up by the hair and presented to Slayer. “At the rally, where she fuckin’ went missin’!” His red, blotchy face almost touches mine. He’s so close I can see the blood vessels snaking out from the corners of his eyes. He’s fucking high. His daughter’s been locked up, raped, beaten, treated like a fuckin’ animal over some shit that she shouldn’t even have to know about, and the arsehole’s gettin’ high as a fuckin’ kite instead of findin’ her? He makes me sick. He’s everything I hate about the life. And he’s more than likely exactly where I’ll end up, because this is what we are—this is what livin’ in the club gets you: bitterness, enemies, and a shit-tonne of bad blood.

My Review

Complimentary copy given by the author in exchange for an honest review

Before I begin my actual review of this book, I have to tell you that it is the companion novel to “Fierce” and that means that this is the same exact story but told from the viewpoint of Hunter, our hero.

As with the first book in the series, I was not completely taken in by this one – I do, however, think that it is slightly better and that many of the issues I had before were almost, if not completely, resolved.

It was very fascinating to me getting inside Hunter’s mind and experiencing what he struggles with every single day of his life: his mental disability – or whatever we should call it – is a constant thorn in his side, and I really think that the author managed to let his frustrations and insecurities come out, allowing the reader the opportunity to empathize with Hunter.

And how frustrating it must be, meeting a girl you are attracted to and not really being able to remember her name unless you write it down. Or even being able to remember exactly how you met her! So yes, I really felt for Hunter when I read this part of the book.

Furthermore, it was great getting to see how close Hunter is to his brother, Jessie, and how he is adamant in figuring out a way for him to get Jessie out of prison. His feelings of helplessness and anger over his brother’s destiny was very moving, and even though I could not understand all Hunter’s reasons for doing the things he do, my heart hurt a lot while reading about his struggles.

I am sorry to have to do this again, but I still have some concerns which make me unable to give this book more stars than I have.

First of all, I completely understand that the author intends to show us how much Hunter struggles with his attraction towards Autumn when he should be concentrating about his brother…but I still cannot grasp why Hunter keeps changing his mind about pursuing Autumn or not. I mean, in my opinion, Hunter’s reasons do not seem that valid, so I am still left a bit in the dark about them. I had hoped that by reading the same story from Hunter’s POV would have shed some light on this matter, but I am not feeling satisfied.

Secondly, I believe that Hunter’s story needs some more editing – not in terms of grammar or anything like that – because I caught myself noticing that there were a lot of repetitions in the book. On more than one occasion, I felt that what I had just read had been mentioned previously and that made me a bit annoyed.

Lastly, I had hoped that there would be an epilogue in this installment of the series in order to pick up any loose ends, but sadly, that is not the case.

I am well aware of the fact that a lot of readers will not agree with my issues, and I honestly do not expect them to. This is my opinion only, so I do encourage you to pick up the novel and make up your own mind about it. Reading is subjective, as it should be, and I still think that Miss Wild is great at showing us how passionately she feels about her characters – I will definitely read more books from her in the future.

“Fierce” (Fierce #1) by Clarissa Wild – My Review

Handsome young man posing.

Title: “Fierce” (Fierce #1)

Author: Clarissa Wild

Genre: Contemporary New Adult Romance

Release Date: 24th January, 2014

Synopsis

Fight for your dreams. Fight for your life. Fight for love.

Nerdy girl Autumn Blakewood is the prime example of a goody two-shoes. She studies every night, is never late for class, and always follows the rules. She has never felt the need to step out of her comfort zone. That is, until she meets Hunter.

Hunter Bane is a cocky, confident bad-boy, who’s nothing but trouble. He’s a dangerous distraction to everyone around him. Sexy and strong, Hunter enjoys the swooning effect he has on women. Especially those who aren’t used to attention, like Autumn.

Autumn finds it hard not to give into Hunter’s advances, even though it all seems like a game to him. Trying to understand him is impossible, because he shrouds himself in mystery.
What she doesn’t know is that Hunter has more baggage than anyone should have to carry. When she discovers he’s in an illegal frat club to save the one person that matters to him, Autumn realizes this could mean the end of her undeniable connection to him. Even their lives are at risk.
But it’s too late to turn back now.

My Review

Complimentary copy given by the author in exchange for an honest review

This is one of those times when I am finding it hard to put my thoughts into complete sentences, because I must admit that I had quite a few problems with this book. At the same time, I do not want to give you any spoilers – as I have said before: no two people read the same book, meaning that just because I did not become fully invested in it, who is to say that the same will happen to you? I will do my best to voice my concerns without ruining it for you.

But first of all, I want to say that there is no real point in me giving you a long and lengthy synopsis of the book as it is already very explicit, and I feel that it is rather pointless of me to repeat any of the actual storyline to you. I will, however, tell you that the story is told solely from Autumn’s point of view.

So let me begin listing the parts of the story I enjoyed:

For a while – until the 30% mark – I liked getting to know Autumn; her shyness felt rather endearing, and her sadness over losing Brody seemed realistic and understandable – he has, after all, been a great friend to her in the past. Furthermore, I could understand her getting frustrated about Hunter constantly changing his mind about her. I also feel that her relationship with Evie turning complicated was portrayed really well by the author.

And Hunter? Well, at first he is a very interesting character – he keeps his thoughts hidden, and the fact that Autumn keeps getting butterflies in her stomach was rather funny to read about. I liked the air of mystery surrounding him, and I was fully invested in uncovering his secrets, but, again, only until 30% into the book – and that is when things started to frustrate me.

I would also like to stress that I could absolutely feel the strong attraction between Autumn and Hunter – it is scorching hot! So I really think that the author did a good job with letting us see that, no question about that.

First of all, I have to say that although I liked Autumn in the beginning of the book, her innocence started to grate on my nerves. She almost seems to be too innocent, too naïve, considering she is supposed to be starting college. To put it bluntly: to me, Autumn was acting more like a girl in high school instead of a freshman at college. Furthermore, I am saddened by the fact that we do not get that much information about her background aside from the fact that her family is poor; and I would have liked to learn more.

The part about Hunter that did not work for me was him changing his mind all…the…time. Granted, when you read about his learning disability, you understand his actions, but only up until a certain point. To be perfectly honest, his mood swings were giving me whiplash, and I am sorry to say that I even wanted to quit reading the book and move on from time to time…However, I very seldom do that, and I am actually glad that I persevered.

Apart from my issues with these characters, I also had some problems with the suspense part of the story: in some ways, I think it was a good theme to write about – and I am sure that a lot of drugs circulate at colleges all the time – but I find it hard to believe that dealing with drugs can be done so much out in the open. But maybe that is just my ignorance voicing itself here as it is a world completely foreign to me.

The main reason I am not giving this book a higher rating – aside from the issues mentioned above – is that I feel that the ending was rushed unnecessarily. I would have liked the book much more if the author had slowed down a bit and given us some more details, or even an epilogue, in order for the story to come full circle.

This review may seem a bit harsh…and you may be right. However, I have always said that I would be completely honest in my reviews, without disrespecting the authors, of course, and I hope that you do not feel that I am being too judgmental. I really think that you can feel that Miss Wild writes with great passion for her characters, that she cares for them deeply; I am just sorry to say that, to me,  the promise of Autumn and Hunter’s journey seemed better than it actually was.
