Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00013]

This is a love story.

This is a romantic story.

Except bananas. Bananas are never romantic.

Lissa was a twenty-year-old girl trying to make it in the equestrian world. She was sassy and smart, strong and a little weird. And she had no idea what she was doing.

Ethan was twenty-seven, tattooed, tall, dark, and hot. And lugging some baggage. He’d already made it in the business and brought Lissa on to help get her on her feet. And it turned out, he liked a little weird.

Ethan made it clear that he wasn’t in the market for a relationship. Lissa was happy to learn the ropes and push her attraction aside.

But how do you draw the line when every touch makes you…shiver?

My Review

Besides “Shiver” being a really heart-warming, funny, and sweet love story, it is also a very eye-opening one. I will get back to this a little later in my review, but I might as well tell you right now that I ADORE this book! (Yes, an exclamation point is warranted, dear readers.) The story of Lissa and Ethan had me frustrated, sad, happy, and hopeful, and that is why I love it so much: because this story made me feel everything that these characters go through – both the highs and the lows.

Now, this book revolves around the equestrian world, and I have to admit, being a horse lover myself, that is part of why I really enjoyed reading it. However, I can see that people who do not know much about this particular environment may feel the opposite. I would like to say, though, that I feel that the love story is what is important, and I believe that you will become engrossed in it just as much as I did.

When we first meet Lissa, she is a 20-year-old woman trying to make a name for herself in the horse racing business. An accident takes place, though, that forces her to reevaluate her career options, and this is where Ethan comes in. He has a different kind of establishment and, having known Lissa, as well as being aware of her capabilities, he offers her a job at his place in order for her to keep working with the animals she loves.

It is no secret that Lissa has been harboring a bit of a crush on Ethan for some years now, but she chooses to accept his job offer, to put aside these feelings, and to be professional about her being his employee. But what happens when Ethan suddenly begins to behave as if he feels the same? Well, life gets complicated, which is not really surprising, but you will have to read the book and find out what happens next…*wink*

I have to say that Lissa is one of the most interesting heroines I have come across in a while. Despite her young age, she is very mature, hard-working and very professional in her line of work; but she does not seem to be too old for her age. Like other young women, she is a bit unsure about what to do with her life, other than knowing that horses will be involved, and that is why I fell for her. She is quirky – maybe even a bit “weird” – but also a very down-to-earth kind of girl. I really liked how she eventually makes Ethan come clean about why he does not think he can make a relationship work – instead of simply waiting him out, she confronts him. And that is very refreshing: it shows a strong character to me.

As for Ethan…Who, in their right mind, would not find him gorgeous? Tall, tattooed, loving the animals he works with, and this certain air of mystery about him: he is, plain and simple, difficult to resist. His troubles are real, genuine, and you can understand why he holds himself back. Being a typical man, he is under the illusion that he has to fix everything on his own, but, unbeknownst to him, he happens to stumble upon a woman who is not afraid to face them with him. The way he opens himself up to Lissa was very moving to read, and I must admit that he is now on top of my favorite book boyfriends.

Without giving you any spoilers, I want to say that one of the reasons why this book gets my highest rating is because it does not merely ends after Lissa and Ethan work out their issues; no, their story continues, and as they get to know each other completely, thereby allowing the readers the time to connect fully with them, you cannot help but fall head over heels in love with the both of them. That is my honest opinion, anyway. No, all is not well in Paradise, but that is due to the hardships they have to go through together. It shows the difficulty of being parents as well as remaining lovers and friends because the obstacles standing in your way seem too much to bear. (And this part of the book made me shed a couple of tears…not an easy feat, so thank you for that, Miss Foss!)

This may be the first book of Miss Foss, but you really cannot tell that is the case. I love her storytelling skills: they are different, but so engaging, honest, and believable. Lissa’s best friend, Steph, and the southern horse breeder, Lawrence, had me laughing a great deal whenever they were part of a scene, and I really cannot wait to get their story next year.

Like the synopsis of the book says: “This is a love story. This is a romantic story. Except bananas. Bananas are never romantic.” you are in for a truly feel-good romance novel; there are some twists and turns you will not see coming; and there are plenty of swoon, sass, and steam as well. Like I mentioned above, “Shiver” made me cry, but it also made me giggle and laugh out loud on several occasions. All of these are factors contributing to me rating this book 5 stars, thus putting it on My Favorite Books list. Yes, I really cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I am so looking forward to following Miss Foss and her work in the future.

“Dance with me?” Lawrence’s voice behind me pulled me from my musings.

I turned with a smile. “Why thank you, sir.”

I followed him onto the dance floor, the orchestra playing a Frank Sinatra ballad. He swept me into his arms like, well, like the perfect gay best friend.

“Don’t you say it.”

“Say what?” I asked innocently.

“I am not your gay best friend. I have sisters. They took dance lessons. My mom made me partner them.”

I couldn’t help laughing loudly, drawing some disapproving glances. He quickly spun me and dipped me in playful retaliation. As he drew me back up, I stood staring straight into Ethan’s heated gaze.

“Can I cut in?” he asked without breaking our eye contact.

From the corner of my eye, I caught Lawrence nodding and stepping away before I was pulled flush to Ethan and we glided across the floor.

“You look absolutely stunning.” He breathed softly into my ear, his right hand settling low, really low, on my bare back, and I shivered.

“Cold?” I felt him smile.

“No, I’m not cold,” I stated quietly, enjoying the feel of being in his arms, the texture of him beneath his tuxedo, and the touch of our hands.

“Are you having fun tonight?”

“I am.” I nodded slowly. “I didn’t know you would be here.”

“I came as a trophy.”

I pulled back to look in his eyes. “Whose trophy? And why?” I was a little irrationally angry and felt stupid that I thought we were having a kind of moment, only to find out he was here with someone else.

“Why are you angry? You do realize you’re here with a date too, right?”

I waved him off. “Lawrence and I are just friends. He’s my arm candy for the night. And maybe a kiss at midnight if I get tipsy enough.”

He glared at me, jaw flexing back and forth. “You’re just friends who sleep together?”

“No. Just friends. As in… actual friends. Nothing more.”

“Why have you both been blatantly flaunting your relationship in front of me then?”

I shrugged. “It tickled me.”

“It tickled you,” he repeated slowly, dangerously.

“Yes. It did. It tickled me to see your mood swings every day, and I was making bets on when you were going to start your period.”

Despite his irritation, he laughed out loud. “God, you’re weird.” He pulled me closer, wrapping my arms up around his neck and sliding his hands down my bare arms and then down my back, settling them there. “I don’t know what I’m doing with you,” he muttered softly.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

I love romance novels – no surprise there, I know – and I even love romantic comedy when it is done right. They are the books I turn to when I have had a long stretch of “heavy reads” and when I need something a bit lighter, yet still romantic, and with a solid plot, to read. And I am thrilled to say that this book, “A Reason To Kill”, by C. P. Smith was exactly what I needed – and the fact that I do not seem able to let the story go, and even bring out my Kindle in order to read certain scenes again, tells me that I am in love. So I might as well admit it right away: another book has been added to my all-time favorite books shelf. And thank you, Miss Smith! *wink*

Now, I will not go into too many details about the story line because I feel that the synopsis ought to be enough – I am not after providing you with spoilers, dear readers, and you should know that about me already – and I only hope that I will be able to convey how much I love this book without ruining it for you.

Thirty-year-old Mia Roberts is a very smart, attractive, adorably klutzy zoologist whose field of expertise is the grizzly bear. She has been sent to Alaska for the first time, and although loving her line of work, she is a city girl, meaning that she definitely does not seem to be the right person for the job – apart from her love of the bears, of course. It does not exactly help matters that, on the day of her arrival to Trails End, Alaska, she manages to catch the attention of one very bossy, very alpha lumberjack: Max Hunter.

Max is thirty-three, a very prominent figure in town, single, and happy to stay that way – until Mia comes along – and he almost immediately knows that she will become “a pain in his ass”, as he likes to call it. When the murder of Mia’s incredibly annoying boss happens on the same day, his prophesy seems to come true: apparently, Mia seems to be the kind of woman who lands herself in trouble, even when she does not mean to, and Max cannot seem to help letting out his alpha tendencies, thus feeling very protective of Mia.

The question is, though, if Mia will allow Max to become more than a fling? Well, you will have to read the book in order to find out.

“Never in my life had I met a man who acted, well, like a man. Apparently, I’ve been surrounded by she-men all this time and the whole experience was rather eye opening, if not a little life altering if I was honest. Where do men like that come from and where have they been hiding all my life?” (Mia)

To be perfectly honest, I am harboring a bit of a girl crush on Mia: I love her commitment to these incredible animals; her feisty – and quirky – personality made me shake my head while having a big smile pasted on my face at the same time; she has a very strong sense of what is right and wrong; and, last, I enjoyed how she became befuddled or shy when she first gets to know Max. But none of her character traits seem to be unrealistic or too much: no, she seems real to me.

As for Max…*deep sigh* No, I may not want to move to Alaska, but I can definitely see how any woman would feel tempted when faced with a commanding lumberjack the likes of him. The way he instinctively knows how to handle Mia is incredibly funny to read about, but what really gets to me is his sweet mixed in with his alpha personality: this man is not afraid to let his feelings come to life, and that speaks highly of him.

Mia, the reality of you, of how I feel now that I’ve found you…Christ, it far outweighs any dream. I see you, all of you, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Now I’m askin’ you to look at me, see me, see what we can have together and fuckin’ take what’s already yours.” (Max)

Like I said in the beginning, this is a romantic comedy, but I love that there also is a mystery to be solved; even though I had a few suspicions about who the culprit was, I was never completely sure until the big reveal took place, so I really feel that Miss Smith has managed to deliver a very engaging and suspenseful book when you look at that specific element of the book alone.

I would also like to address that although the author “warns” her readers in the book – about it being about insta-love – it really does not feel like it. Yes, there is a very powerful physical attraction simmering right from the beginning, but what I love about this book is that it certainly does not feel like it. Somehow, Mia and Max manage to get to know each other really well in a short period of time, and I really swooned as I got to see what a strong connection they find in each other.

I feel that it would be wrong to leave out two very important aspects that stood out to me while I was reading this book. One is the environment and setting the author has chosen to venture into: I sometimes felt as if I were inside the book because she managed to draw a very vivid picture of these two factors. The bears, the nature and the work entailed to keep them safe – and keeping the human population safe from the bears – was very fascinating to me. Second, I have to mention two of the most amazing secondary characters I have ever come across: the feisty Maxine – Max’ mother – and her friend, Martha: Oh…my…god! Let me just say that I want to be Maxine when I grow up! *wink* Seriously, these older women nearly made me wet my panties with their antics!

If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh hard, and one that definitely focus on two very believable characters which will make you combust with their sexual chemistry, look no further: this is the book for you. So thank you, Miss Smith, for writing this story! I am very much looking forward to your next.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

I have been a massive fan of Miss Weis for close to a year now, and I love how she always manages to make me laugh and swoon with her romance novels. This author has a very down-to-earth way of telling her stories and she has a certain knack of creating strong, believable characters who you wish you could sit down to have dinner with sometimes. So yes, I always recommend her books to lovers of romance, and “That Night With You” is just as enjoyable as the other novels written by Miss Weis.

I will not go into that many details about the actual storyline of this novel, because the synopsis tells you a lot already, and I will do my best to not give you any spoilers, either.

Have you ever had a romantic or sexual encounter that you think back on years later from time to time? Do you sometimes wish that things had turned out differently? I believe that we all have regrets in life, and Madison Barnett is no different: when she was a 19-year-old student, she made a very un-romantic decision: having a one-night-stand in order to get rid of her virginity. I know, it is a bit shocking, BUT so very realistic – at least to me. On this fateful night, she meets a man, Harry, and, unbeknownst to him, he manages to make such an impression on Madison that no man since Harry manages to make her fall in love.

When Madison is hired to work at a very prestigious architect firm Parr & Associates, she is shocked to find that her boss, Hayden Parr, reminds her so much about her one-night-stand, Harry. What is Madison to do now? Wait and see if Hayden brings up the past himself? Or confront him and risk making a complete fool of herself?

Well, if you want the answers to these questions, you will have to read the book. *wink*

I might as well confess right away that I am harboring a massive girl crush on Madison! Yes, there is such a thing as a girl crush, dear readers. Madison is sweet, ambitious, strong-willed, yet also rather shy when it comes to the opposite sex. In the beginning, she has some self-esteem issues, but I really like how she, through her encounters with Hayden, grows into becoming a very mature, feisty woman who goes after the things she wants. There were times, while reading her story, when I felt completely crushed on her behalf, and I just wanted to give her a hug – so yes, I like Madison very well indeed.

As for Hayden: he is the perfect match to Madison in many ways. He has been hurt in the past, thus preventing him from putting his trust in other people, and I really like his honesty and him being upfront about his intentions with Madison. He is quick-witted, a clever businessman, but, more importantly, the fact that he searched high and low for Madison after their one-night-stand so many years ago completely melted my heart. It speaks of a very strong character. This does not, however, mean that I did not find him to be a bit of an idiot sometimes – because I did – and I was actually very unsure about how this book would end until I read the epilogue. So I applaud the author for keeping me in the dark until the very last page.

But I can already hear your question: Why not give the book 5 stars, then? Well…In all honesty, my reasoning for this is Hayden: although he possesses many positive character traits, he confuses me a lot. What I mean to say is that he can be hot one minute, then cold, and he acts like a boyfriend even when he makes it quite clear to Madison that he is not after a real relationship. I never felt completely satisfied with his reasoning, I suppose, because the things he said did not always match his actions. Call me crazy, but I have to be honest here: A man who changes his mind a lot about what he wants can be a bit of a turn-off for me. Nevertheless, I do think that Hayden redeems himself in the end, and this book is definitely one of my favorites of 2014.

As always, I am in love with the storytelling skills that Miss Weis possesses: you will find that there is plenty of wit, laughter, romance, as well as a cast of quirky, funny secondary characters in her books. But Miss Weis is trying something a little bit different this time, and that concerns the sex scenes: because they…are…hot! I mean, hot-as-sin hot! Most definitely guaranteed to make your panties combust! So keep the fan ready, my friends: you are going to need it.

There are always some serious issues being dealt with in this author’s books, and it is the same with “That Night With You”. To me, the love story of Madison & Hayden is about trust – trust in other people, but most definitely also about trusting in yourself; you can overcome past issues if you let go, overcome your fears, and, lastly, allow your heart to feel again. Nothing is more important in life than love.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

Death is such a taboo subject when, in fact, it really should not be. Now, do not go into this book thinking that that is everything this story is about: no, this is a love story that makes you feel everything. The love story between Genevieve Clare and Ahren Finnegan is sweet, funny, life affirming, and uplifting. Add to that some great, dry wit delivered by some of the secondary characters, a bit of steaminess, and overall “feel-good-vibes”, and I am positive that you will come to love, maybe even adore, this book as much as I do.

As always, I will not give away any spoilers of the story, but what makes it so much more important than usual is the fact that this is such a different romance novel from what we see on the market these days, and I honestly believe that it will ruin the reading pleasure for you if I reveal too much of it.

Genevieve – Gen – has suffered great loss at a very young age: losing both her parents and grandmother in a horrific way. Needless to say, she is filled with sorrow, but she does not know how to work through it in a “normal” way. She has been in love with Ahren Finnegan since she was a little girl, and even though he admits to feeling the same way about her, fate decides to step in and tear these lovers apart. It does not happen in an overly dramatic way, but, again, I refuse to give any spoilers; suffice it to say, years will pass until Gen and Ahren meet again, and, this time, decide to take a leap of faith in order to find happiness together.

”All the men in my life had been compared, unbeknownst to them, to Ahren Finnegan. They never stood a chance.” (Genevieve)

Gen is a quirky, sweet, and caring person; to say that her line of work is different would be an understatement: I honestly do not know if there exists professional mourners in this day and age, but I kind of hope so. You see, the services Gen offer her clients are compassionate, selfless, and absolutely amazing. Are they eccentric? Yes, absolutely. But is this really such a bad thing? To some, yes – to others, not so much.

As for Ahren: well, he is such a wonderful person. I love him! In some aspects, he is just as scared as Gen, but I love his stubbornness, his humour, and his alpha tendencies (especially in the bedroom *wink*). He understands Gen like no other person does, and he knows how to handle her when she feels afraid and want to bolt. Furthermore, he understands why she has chosen the profession she has, and that means everything.

‘”I wanted to be your first, Gen. All those years, I knew I could say anything, tell you anything, and you would’ve thought it was cool or asked me more, and we would talk. I missed you. I missed talking to you. Not the little girl you; I missed you.”’ (Ahren)

I would also like to add that Ahren is not insecure about opening up the can of worms, and you just have to love a man who does not shy away from disagreeing with his woman – because that, my dear readers, is not an easy task!

‘“No going back,” he said firmly. “I mean it, Gen. It’s you and me, now. Not our pasts. Now. If you ask me to leave, I will not go. Do you understand?”’ (Ahren)

As I said in the beginning of my review: death is not something you want to dwell on – and I do not think that you should, of course – but neither is it a subject to ignore at the same time. It just is. It is a fact of life, plain and simple. But what I feel that Miss Hartnett wants to tell us by writing this story is that one should make the most of one’s life; that it is more than acceptable to be different; and, last, that love is all that matters in the end. True love, in any shape or form, is everything. And that brings me hope.

‘I felt his smile against my own. “What if something happens to me?” I asked. He held my face in his hands and said, “Then you wait for me to join you, baby. I won’t be far behind.”’ (Genevieve & Ahren)

So: yes, I recommend this rather different, but endearing, romance novel: the storyline is unusual; Gen and Ahren are lovely, believable, and genuine characters; Miss Hartnett’s storytelling skills are so unique, and you can really feel that she cares deeply for every single person she introduces us to in her book; finally, the cast of secondary characters in this novel is so much fun! Yes, even when you find yourself bawling your eyes out – and yes, that I did – you will end up smiling because of something a certain person said in a previous chapter.

This has become one of my favourite books this year, so please take a chance, dear reader, and buy it!

ENJOY THE EXCERPT!

I approached Bryce Oskin, with caution, and when I reached his side, he demanded, “Who the fuck are you?”

Charm and disarm. Charm and disarm.

“I’m Genevieve Clare, Mr. Oskin,” I said with a grin. “I believe you hired me to come to your funeral? Mind if I join you?” I brought my own bag of goodies and opened a white baker’s box from Brewster’s.

“You some kind of spooky chick?” he asked, his eyes squinting as he studied me.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he was… sweet on me already. “Kinda, yeah. If by spooky you mean I get paid to go to funerals, give people a nudge, and check for a heartbeat. Oh, and I live at Eden Hills. Then yeah, I’m spooky.” I grabbed a plastic fork and took a bite of amazing cake. It was always amazing, but today it seemed more amazing than usual.

“There,” I nodded toward the folder I’d set down on a little table to his side. “I just need you to sign on the dotted line. And the bag there is from Ruby. But I’m taking over the goody-bag duties, so tell me what you like and I’ll get it for you.” I licked my lips and did it seductively because I knew this was a man who appreciated a woman. Also known as a dirty old man. “Want a bite?”

“You gonna tell that Nazi Nurse Ratchet on me?” He jerked his head toward Cheryl.

“Are you gonna drop dead from half a slice of cake?” I countered.

“Nope.”

“Then I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship, Mr. Oskin. I visit once a week, unless I have a funeral, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday. I always bring cake for my clients. If there’s something you don’t like, just tell me. But I usually bring a selection.”

“You do this every week?” he asked, disbelief in his voice.

“What do you mean?”

“You eat like that every week? When you see other clients?” His eyes slid up and down the length of my body.

“I have a high metabolism.” I smiled. It really was a miracle I wasn’t as big as a house. But my sweet tooth was limited to sharing with clients. I had to give myself some sort of boundaries.

He grabbed the plastic fork I’d handed him and stabbed the slice of Meyer lemon cake with vanilla bean cream cheese frosting. His eyes closed, and when they opened, he said, “God bless you.” After a few more bites, he asked, “So, you’re gonna open up my box and poke me before they burn me, right?”

“Yes, sir, I’ll make sure you’re good and dead.”

“Spooky chick.” His tone was gruff, but his lip tipped up in the corner.

I saw it with pride. Disarmament, accomplished.

Bryce Oskin had ordered the Shake N Bake. I had permission from most of the mortuaries and crematories to open the casket and check the body. I mean, you could just tell when someone was dead. By the time I had my turn with the deceased, they were most likely already embalmed. But some of them chose not to be, or if they were, they hired me to come to their place of death and make damn sure there was no chance in hell they were coming back to life.

A while back, there was a highly publicized case in Southern California. A woman had been pronounced dead and taken to the hospital morgue. But when they opened the fridge for her to be transported to the funeral home, they saw obvious signs of a struggle. She’d been put in there alive.

Yikes.

I’d never been afraid of death, and, after my family died and the man I loved almost had, I embraced death in my own strange way. I made it my life’s work, I guess. While it took a lot to creep me out, that story gave me the heebie-jeebies something fierce. It was all over the news. Every staff member from the hospital to the morgue was investigated then sued or fired or both. And, of course, old people sitting in the common room of a rest home from the wee a.m. hours to beddy-bye time, saw that story six times in one day, minimum. I ended up receiving so many requests to make sure they weren’t breathing, I added the Shake N Bake to my website

Teaser Quotes

#1 – With Tony, it seemed to take a lot to get me going. When Ahren walked into a room, I wanted to smother him with my vagina.

#2 – “It was a work of art, beautiful, as if carved by the masterful, dirty, filthy hands that knew exactly what a girl like me would want.”

#3 – “We’re all gonna die, Cookie. Death is the devil you know. The better you live, the more you piss him off, and he just hates that. Right now, you’re lettin’ him get his way.”

#4 – So when I looked at him in the truck, I saw this man I’d loved for years. This time, instead of looking at him with the eyes of a silly girl, an awkward teen, a romantic young woman, or a grieving daughter…this time, I looked at him with the eyes of a woman in love. A woman who knew her heart, finally, and I knew, in that moment, nothing would ever part us again.

#5 – Now, seeing all of him, I fell a little more in love that day because, in my mind, he’d always been perfection. But no one is perfect, not in the real world. His fragility made him so in my eyes.

#6 – “Little pieces,” I whispered.

“Sorry?” he asked against my hair.

“Just when I think I can’t love you more, you give me another piece to add to my heart.”

#7 – “Love it when you talk to me about cement. It makes me think about your cock,” I said against his lips.

#8 – “I love you, Gen and you love me and I hope to God you have more of these skirts because I’m about to tear that fucker right off of your body.”

#9 – “I’ll share your smile, your laughter, your generosity, and your friendship, but I won’t share your body, and I won’t share your heart.”

#10 – “I’ve decided it’s worth the risk of losing you and having you for one day, than never having you at all.”

SYNOPSIS

Fast. That’s how I like life, especially my two great joys: bikes and women. I’m committed to exclusively riding one, but not the other.

Until April.

A sexy-arse freelance photographer who’s travelled the world, and doesn’t do long walks on the beach or romantic candlelit dinners. She enjoys running with the bulls and food spicy enough to make your hair fall out. If that weren’t enough to get me hard, she rides a mean mother of a motorcycle.

I’ve gotta have a taste of this wildcat.

~Spencer (Jones)

I don’t do fast. Not anymore. I’ve got my career, my independence, and since I fled Spain to come back home I promised myself that I wouldn’t be put second—or third, for that matter—again.

Then I meet pretty boy Spencer.

He’s smooth, oozing the most potent pheromones probably known to modern science, and he’s making a move on me. One kiss was almost enough for my promise to dissolve.

My head says no—my treacherous body screams yes. I’m gonna make Spencer work for it. Make him fight for the chance to have me, because I know that deep down I’m worth it.

~April MacIntyre

*The book can be read as a stand-alone, but it is best to read after the first two in the series, as the main characters in Spark and Spike continue to appear in each book in the series.*

My Review

If you, like me, are a reader who loves being surprised by characters, I do believe that you will love “Strike”. I had no idea, going into this book, that I would fall so hard and fast for Spencer Jones, but Miss Ryder had me so intrigued by this MX rider from the very beginning. He is so different from who I initially thought him to be.

We all know what it is like to only do what other people expect us to do – and how many of us long to break free of them. As in Spencer’s case, I do not think that it matters how old you are before you find the courage to spread your wings and try to fulfill your dreams. And I think it really comes across in this author’s writing.

April and Spencer’s first meeting is different, interesting, fun, and sexy. I loved it! At first, I felt that April seems to be so carefree and all about having fun, but then I stopped my reading and started to reflect on it…And the more I thought about it, the more determined I became to get beneath the surface of this feisty photographer. No woman, I believe, is that free of a spirit, not in the real world, I mean. There has to be a story behind it, and I immediately wanted to uncover it.

April wanting to keep her relationship to Spencer a secret had me worried quite a bit. You see, I can definitely understand her reasons, but I immediately thought that a happy outcome would not really be realistic. Because these kinds of secrets usually have a way of making themselves known – and always at the worst possible time! Still, I kept hoping for the best and simply enjoyed how these two characters got to know each other better.

As April & Spencer’s relationship progresses, I was absolutely convinced that they belong to each other. I really love how April just takes charge and goes after the things she wants. She is feisty, sexy, smart, and funny. Oh, and adorable, too. The fact that she is all those things makes her perfect for Spencer: she shows him what life should be all about, and her supporting him in every way makes him realize that he truly has the strength to go after his dreams. And, in my opinion, he needs a firecracker like April as his woman.

As for Spencer: well, he…is…HAWT! Oh, my goodness! Phew! Like I stated above, I did not believe that I would become so in love with him…But I love his sensitive side…his humour…his dirty thoughts…Oh, and his man-whore past? It is quite easy to understand why he acted that way….He is not perfect, of course, and I actually think that he should insist upon coming clean to Mac in more firm way, but I can understand his reasons for not doing it. The fact that he lets April set the pace of their relationship even though he is saddened by not being upfront about everything, makes him perfect BBF material in my eyes. It is just a joy getting to know him and realizing what a sweet, genuine guy he has become since “Spike”. I love being surprised by characters, and Miss Ryder has certainly fulfilled that wish.

The fact that April is making Spencer work really hard to earn her affections? Well, first: poor guy! Second: it gives you some great insight into April’s character, and as we learn about her past heartaches, it actually makes sense! Moreover, it teaches Spencer that there is more to a relationship than the sex – at least, there should be – and even though it may seem old-fashioned to some, I really like it. It also builds a lot of anticipation and tension – and, wow, this author really had me squirming in my seat! You can most definitely feel how much Spencer yearns and aches to make April his.

Overall, I really enjoyed this installment in the Spark series. April and Spencer complement each other perfectly. Whereas April is always about taking chances, even risks, Spencer knows when it is time to slow down a bit when necessary – at least, that is how I feel – so there is a great balance in their relationship. There is not a single scene in this book that seems off or over-the-top. The conversations between all the characters are genuine and lifelike – not unrealistic, annoying or stilted – and the pace of the story is smooth – not too fast, not too slow.

Both April and Spencer learn that in order to move forward, it is necessary to let go of the past. And what their love story tells me is this: You have to reach for their dreams, no matter what other people want for you, and even though you will face countless troubles, they are easier to overcome when you are not alone.

My final note before finishing this review will be about the writing. In my opinion, Miss Ryder has a gift: she creates such realistic, honest, and genuine characters. Furthermore, this author incorporates wit into even some pretty heavy situations, and I love how she can make steamy and sexy scenes fun. Her words make me sigh, laugh, cry, and swoon. When I read her books, I never want to get to the last page…and when I do reach “The End”, I immediately want to read them again.

There you have it: my honest opinion on why I believe this book deserves five stars. I hope you enjoy Spencer & April’s wild love story. And be prepared to have your panties combust once or twice…*wink*

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

If there is one Australian author who understands how to make me laugh, cry, shout, and swoon, it is Miss Jenner. I have loved her Sugartown series from the very beginning, and I am more than thrilled to say that being back with Elijah Cade & Ana Belle in this latest installment has been absolutely fantastic!

This couple has had it difficult from the beginning, to say the least, and even though they love each other more than anything, their pasts are still lurking in the background, waiting to rear their ugly heads again. And the question is if they can find a way to move forward, once and for all, instead of always waiting for a bomb to explode.

Elijah, who holds a very special place in my heart, is, however, ready to take their relationship to the next level – and no, I will not reveal what that is, sorry – but he feels rather insecure about how Ana will react. He continues to doubt her wanting to stay with him, and he is filled with a lot of insecurities about himself as well.

Ana, on the other hand, has definitely become stronger in many ways since her attack a few years back, but Elijah’s cagey and rather suspicious behavior makes her doubt if she will ever really be enough for him! And so the roller coaster starts again…

Now, I cannot write this review without mentioning how much I really like how Miss Jenner shows us a more mature side to her writing skills this time. Please do not misunderstand me: there are still plenty of great laughs in this book, and some really embarrassing, yet endearing, moments, too, and I would definitely not be without them, but it honestly seems to me that there is a more serious tone of voice to this book than we have seen before from Miss Jenner.

Both Elijah and Ana have grown up a lot since we last saw them, and I really enjoyed seeing how they have evolved in many ways. Furthermore, due to the hardships they have to endure this time, they finally realize the ways to be strong for one another – whenever it is necessary, of course. Meaning: they are still pretty nutty, and so adorable that you will never get enough of them, but they come to understand the truly important matters in life. That is how I feel, at least.

I think I have mentioned this before, but one of the best ways to explain if I have truly loved a book is if I keep thinking about it days after I have finished reading it. I miss Elijah and Ana so much right now, but I still feel that their turbulent love story has come to a perfect end. But why am I not giving the book five stars? Well, to tell the truth, I wanted to see a bit more suspense, or angst, as Ana and Elijah are confronted with the fact that her attacker is back in town. In short: I would have liked seeing a few more scenes when Ana is forced to confront her issues some more. It is so difficult writing this review without giving you any spoilers, and I am sorry if you feel confused about my reasoning. Read the book, and then make up your mind – reading is, after all, subjective!

“Greetings From Sugartown” has become a favourite book of 2014 for me, and like I stated above: there are lots of laughs, drama, and angst as is the case with the previous books in the series. Oh, and some very steamy and hot sexual encounters – phew! They will definitely make you tingle in all the right places. Need I say more? No, I think not. *wink*

If you have been a fan of the Sugartown Series from the beginning, just like me, I am absolutely positive that you will love being back with the whole crazy gang again! I loved practically everything about this book – especially some of the funnier moments when Holly and Jackson make an appearance – and I loved seeing Elijah and Ana finding faith and trust in each other. They are, plain and simple, perfect for another – but they are not perfect themselves. However, that is what makes them seem so real: it is so easy to relate to them because life is messy out in the real world, but there is always hope that things will fall into place. And that is a comforting thought…

Miss Jenner, you have done it again! I loved being back in Sugartown, and even though I am sad to leave – for now, at least – I am uplifted by the thought that I can always come back: because I know that I will read your books many times in the years to come. ❤
