*** Mature Content; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content***

“Life is like an easy little lick, a signature flourish of my drumsticks to make a song my own. Something I can do in my sleep. Effortless and smooth. No drama… until I met her.”

Cody Driscoll cruises through life with a constant, steady beat. Mechanic by day, he’s the drummer for the Bangin’ Mofos at the Copperline Bar by night. Tearing it up on the drums provides an outlet, a release that soothes the stress of the world around him.

But when the withdrawn and reticent Ilsa starts working at the Copperline, Cody catches a glimpse of something nobody else seems to see – a beautiful, tenuous heart. Someone to shelter and shield. Her loneliness strikes a chord that resonates through his soul, no matter how much she tries to push him away.

As her past comes to light, the promise of their love unravels. Cody realizes the extent of her tangled and tumultuous fear. Her secrets test his conscience, and he stumbles, unsure how to make sense of his stubborn honor in a world that isn’t always black and white.

ELL TEASER 1

Sibylla Matilde

Sibylla Matilde grew up in the mountain valleys of Southwest Montana exploring the dusty Old West gold country on the back of a horse. She attended a two-room schoolhouse beginning in 1st grade & had the same teacher until she changed schools after 7th. Beginning at about age 12, Sibylla discovered historical romance, feeding off of work of Jude Deveraux & Lisa Kleypas. She loves a book that can make the reader run the gamut of emotions, from the sweet glow of new love to gut-wrenching heartache. She is a true romantic & always has stories floating around in her head, living in a fantasyland until she writes them down to free them.

Music is her emotional trigger. Growing up with a Wagnarian-loving mother, Sibylla was raised to treasure music that digs deep into the psyche, drawing out elation, sorrow, grief, desire. The soundtrack to her life includes many genres spanning centuries. She looooooooves Thirty Seconds to Mars (rather obsessively, actually… but, really, how can you NOT be crazy about this guy!? Jared Leto. Shhh. ) & pimps them out to all her friends through Spotify. She also delights in Met Opera HD broadcasts at her local movie theater & hopes (listening Met?) to someday see Diana Damrau reprise her role as Mozart’s Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. Sibylla lives with her husband and hero who saved her from her own calamitous, young-adult self. He makes her laugh daily, even when things are tough. He’s proved to her that love really can heal a shattered soul. In 18 years, they have never had a fight, although argue regularly with their two teenage kids who have, unfortunately, inherited their father’s quick wit (unfortunate as it is a quick wit that Sibylla, herself, definitely does not possess – there is a reason she is a writer & not a stand-up comedian). They live a quiet life with their two weird little rescued Chiweenies. Wait… teenagers & little yap-dogs? OK, maybe not so quiet.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

The Stage Dive Series by Kylie Scott has been one of my favourite series from the very beginning, and I have been eagerly anticipating the final book, “Deep”, ever since I learned it would focus on Ben, the sexy bass player, and Lizzy, the younger sister to Anne.

The thing most college students dread happens to Lizzy, and I enjoyed the way Miss Scott managed to convey all the different and conflicting emotions Lizzsy goes through once she learns that she is pregnant. I have to confess that I was a bit sceptical at first, but the more I read this book, the more I came to admire Lizzy for the way she chooses to handle her situation. Furthermore, she is a very witty and strong character who had me chuckling quite a bit, and I really appreciate that fact in the books I read. It was easy to understand why she fell for Ben, and even more so to cheer her on whenever she seemed confused and sad about certain aspects of his character.

Ben is the typical rock star: he revels in his freedom, and in the fact that he can have whatever his heart desires because of his stardom. Having grown up with not much money, it is not difficult to understand why he does things a certain way. He was, however, also a bit of a douche towards Lizzy, but, again, his reasons were valid – at least up to a certain point. Also, the way he reacts when he hears about the “bun in the oven” is not that farfetched: who would not freak out just a little bit when learning about an unplanned pregnancy?

These two characters share a very evident attraction towards one another, but I have to say that the way they become friends first is one of my absolute favourite parts of this story. Ben and Lizzy are perhaps not so different from one another – not deep down, anyway – and I really hoped that things between them would be resolved in a way that it would not ruin the relations they have with the rest of the Stage Dive band members and their girlfriends.

Miss Scott has, as always, a very compelling and engaging way of telling her stories. Her writing always pulls me in from the very beginning, and it was no different with this book. I really love how she is able to incorporate wit and banter even when certain scenes may not exactly call for it, and I also admire her for not taking the easiest route all the time.

The reasons that “Deep” is not given my highest rating is the fact that I sometimes failed to connect completely with Ben; in many ways, I had trouble understanding some of his actions, and I would have loved to have had a few chapters written from his point of view. The other reason is that the ending was a bit rushed to me, but, as usual, please remember that these issues are subjective – thus, mine alone – and I daresay that many of you will disagree with me on these two points. But I have always given you my honest opinions, and it would be wrong of me to ‘change my ways’, if you will, if I did not continue to do so.

I feel a bit sad that this series has come to an end, because it has provided me with many laughs, tears, and swoon-worthy moments; “Deep” is definitely steamy, Lizzy is a truly interesting character, and Ben is incredibly sexy…I firmly believe that you will enjoy this last instalment to this series, and if you have not read any of Miss Scott’s books before, I strongly urge you to read these. I guarantee that they will make your romantic heart go all aflutter.

His laughter, it didn’t really sound the smallest bit amused. “Christ. You’re done here.”

“Ah, no. I’m actually not. Now see, this is where we have a problem.” I folded my arms. Then unfolded them because like fuck I’d look defensive. He was the one in the wrong, not me. “You’re not prepared to take me, or my feelings, seriously. What you want is to hide away in Mr. Too Cool for Commitment land and just play with my affections when it suits you. Okay, I’ve accepted that. But none of that means it’s okay for you to come in here and act like you’re the boss of me. None of it.”

“That so?” he asked, leaning down so that we were almost nose to nose.

“That’s so, baby.” I play-punched him in the shoulder, which it should be noted, I barely came up to. Okay, so maybe the alcohol on a mostly empty stomach had made me slightly/lots braver/sillier. “So why don’t you take your little caveman jealous tantrum bullshit somewhere else. See, I do this funny thing I like to refer to as whatever the fuck I want. Understand?”

He just stared.

“And as pretty as you are with your beard and your muscles, you are too damn tricky and . . . complicated and shit for me.”

“I am?”

“Yes, you are. Are you finally seeing my point here?”

“You bet.”

“Excellent. So take your hotness elsewhere, kind sir. I want no part of it!” Huh. I had so told him. Drunken bravado was the best.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review

There is something about A. L. Jackson’s penmanship that always manages to draw me in immediately when I read her stories. I may not have picked up every book she has written – yet – but only because of a severe lack of time (always an issue for a bookaholic, eh?). However, I am a massive fan of hers, and I have actually no idea how I will write this review without revealing spoilers…I will try, though, to do my best.

With “A Stone in the Sea”, Miss Jackson introduces us to a slightly sexier side to her writing – that is how I feel, at least – yet you have no problem identifying her trademark evocative storytelling skills at the same time.

Sebastion Stone is, to the outside, the typical rock star, but this is, in fact, a man who feels everything, which is why he completely stole my heart; he is difficult, perhaps, but all artists are to a certain extent, and once you become more and more acquainted with him, his family, and his secrets, you will understand why that is. He is so loyal and protective to those he loves, and these are only admirable traits, of course.

Shea Bentley is guarding her own secrets, past hurts and heartaches, but she cannot deny the attraction she feels towards Sebastian. She has a beautiful soul, and she almost always chooses to see the good in people. But do not let that deceive you because she is far from naïve: this is a woman who is so much stronger than she appears to be, and I loved how she is not afraid to go to battle for Sebastian.

I always enjoy when authors include the POVs of both of the main characters, but more so now than ever: the complexities of these two people run deep, and I loved delving into their hearts and minds, allowing me to see the real persons underneath the masks they show to the outside world.

Now, even though this is a story filled with anguish and heartache, it is also incredibly funny and uplifting. I am not afraid to admit that I even snort-giggled from time. I will also have to confess, though, that the story did break my heart a bit…I will not divulge why that is, of course, but just be prepared to cry while reading this beautiful, deeply emotional love story.

I realise that this review is quite shorter from the ones I usually write, but I fear that I will reveal too much if I write anymore. Suffice it to say, I ADORED this romance because of all the feelings I went through while reading it, and I simply cannot wait until Miss Jackson releases the next book in the series. ❤

EXCERPT

With a smile, I turned around, then froze when my sight registered the obscured figure leaning against the wall. A strangled gasp caught in my throat, and my heart took off at a sprint, blood pounding hard in my ears.

Pushing from the wall, he stepped from the shadows, his hands again stuffed deep in his pockets.

My heart rate only increased, the energy radiating from him almost as strong as the disappointment he’d left me with when he’d gone.

I pressed my hand to my chest to try to still the panic thundering against my ribs. “You scared me.”

“I’m sorry.” The words were soft. “That’s the last thing I want to do.”

But he did. I was scared of what he was capable of doing to me, the way I knew he held the power to trounce all over this hammering heart, to hold it in his hand and crush it into a million unrecognizable pieces.

“What are you doing here?” I asked on a shaky breath.

He looked to the sky and exhaled heavily, before he leveled his gaze back on me. “The same thing I’m doing every night, Shea. Thinking about you and wondering why the hell I can’t stop.”

My stomach flipped, and I gulped for air.

“What do you want from me?”

He laughed, lifted his elbows out to his sides in a helpless gesture without pulling his hands free. “Dinner?”

Nonsensical laughter shot from me. “At three in the morning?”

“Breakfast?” he amended, a coy smile pulling at his full, crooked lips.

Tingles spread across my skin, and I ran my hands up my bare arms. “I already told you I don’t have time for distractions.”

“Come on, Shea. It’s just food. Go out with me. Just tonight.”

Somehow I knew it was a lie, even though he wanted to believe it was true.

Nervously, I glanced to the back door all the while being inexplicably drawn to this man I didn’t even know. I knew I should make a break for it, run for the safety of my little world and give him no opportunity to rip it apart.

“I am hungry,” I found myself saying. After a long night of work, it was true. But it had nothing to do with the reason I was giving in.

Because I just wanted to…

I shook my head.

That was it. I just wanted. I wanted to be in his space. I wanted to understand why he had this pull on me. I wanted him.

Even though I’d never allow myself to have him.

“Come Dancing” by Leslie Wells – My Review

ComeDancingCover

Title: “Come Dancing”

Author: Leslie Wells

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publisher: Allium Press

Release Date: 14th June, 2014.

SYNOPSIS

Julia is a book-loving publisher’s assistant. Jack is a famous British rock star. “Opposites attract” is an understatement.

It’s 1981. Twenty-four-year-old Julia Nash has recently arrived in Manhattan, where she works as a publisher’s assistant. She dreams of becoming an editor with her own stable of bestselling authors—but it is hard to get promoted in the recession-clobbered book biz.

Julia blows off steam by going dancing downtown with her best friend, Vicky. One night, a hot British guitarist invites them into his VIP section. Despite an entourage of models and groupies, Jack chooses Julia as his girl for the evening—and when Jack Kipling picks you, you go with it. The trouble is … he’s never met a girl like her before. And she resists being just one in a long line.

Jack exposes her to new experiences, from exclusive nightclubs in SoHo to the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood; from mind-bending recording sessions to wild backstage parties. Yet Julia is afraid to fall for him. Past relationships have left her fragile; one more betrayal just might break her.

As she fends off her grabby boss and tries to move up the corporate ladder, Julia’s torrid relationship with Jack takes her to heights she’s never known—and plunges her into depths she’s never imagined.

With a fascinating inside look at publishing, this entertaining story of a bookish young woman’s adventures with a rock superstar is witty, moving, and toe-curlingly steamy.

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the author through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

New York, 1981. To say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book would be an understatement. Being a child of the eighties, I cannot say that I remember much from that time period, but I have seen enough movies and read plenty of books depicting this decade, so I believe that Miss Wells has given us a really great romance novel that is true to how life was like when you were young and living in the metropolis that is New York.

Although I have read quite a few books about “the average girl meeting and falling in love with a rock star”, I must say that this is definitely one of the better ones. This is also due to the fact that Miss Wells is showing great storytelling skills, and you can most certainly feel that she is very knowledgeable about the setting and genre she has chosen to write in.

I really enjoyed getting to know the heroine, Julia Nash, especially how she struggles with making a name for herself in the publishing industry. She does not come off as being naïve or disillusioned about life – rather, she seems to be a very realistic, down-to-earth kind of girl who does not want to become another notch on the bedpost of famous British rock star, Jack Kipling. Even though she is a massive fan of the band, and has been harboring a bit of a crush on Jack for years, she knows that he is living his life in a completely different way than she is. And the question is if Julia dares to let herself fall for a man who seems hell-bent on avoiding any kind of commitment even when his own heart is urging him to let go?

I feel that the life of Jack Kipling is described really well: he is charming, sexy, and a bit of a manipulator. The way that he is drawn to Julia is really sweet and fun to read about; because here is this famous rock star who cannot fathom why a gorgeous, brainy girl such as Julia will not simply fall at his feet and let him have his way with her! Yes, the “courting” of Julia is particularly enjoyable to me. But I also find him to be rather vulnerable, and I loved seeing him open up to Julia, albeit on his own terms; does he, at times, seem selfish and annoying? Absolutely! However, as these two characters get to know each other better, you can really feel the need and longing for love they share – even when one of them (read: Jack) does not exactly want to admit it.

The whole rock star lifestyle was also depicted really well in the book: theirs is a life of excess and indulgence, living each day as if it were the last, and not taking things too seriously – at least, not when it concerns other matters outside the band and its success. The way Julia is, at times, a bit overwhelmed by everything feels very realistic to me, and I think that one of the things I really admire about her is the fact that she does not let go of her own values, trying to make herself become a person she is not: she stays true to her life’s goals.

I am choosing to give this book 4.5 stars because of two things: the ending being one of them. Because even though all seems well in paradise – for now, at least – I feel that it is a bit too abrupt. It may seem like a small matter to a lot of readers, but I have to be honest: if I had not known that a second book about Julia & Jack will be out next year, I would be really disappointed, because their story seems far from being over. Also, I would have really liked getting inside Jack’s head, because he can be so puzzling sometimes, so I hope that we will get a few chapters written from his point of view in book #2.

All in all, I would recommend this book to any lover of romance novels: the scene of New York in the eighties is fascinating; Julia and Jack – as well as the secondary characters – are well-rounded, loveable and flawed characters that you will come to care about a great deal; the writing of Miss Wells is flawless and engaging; and, last, the banter and sexual attraction between this couple will make you smile, laugh, and swoon – not to mention, even perhaps blush a little bit.

I am so looking forward to reading the next book!

Blog Tour: “Fighting To Forget” (Fighting Series #3) by J. B. Salsbusy – My Review

PBT banner FTF

FightingToForgetCover

Synopsis

Every fighter is drawn to the violence, the release that a perfect hit can bring.

But very few are drawn to the pain.

Rex Carter lives behind a wall of indifference. The demons from his childhood act as an anesthetic, keeping him distant from emotional connections. Only the ache from a knock to the jaw, the sting of a tattoo needle, or the heat from a piercing can jolt him back from the numbness. The fiery pain is all he can feel, and nothing compares to the burn.

Or so he thought.

Working in a Las Vegas bar isn’t Georgia McIntyre’s dream. But she hopes it’ll be an end to the nightmare.

She’s watched him, followed him and kept tabs, all in preparation for this moment: to make amends and share the secret she’s been carrying since she was a kid. But she didn’t count on the feelings that seeing him again would stir up, the vacant look in his stormy-blue eyes, and his perfect body now mutilated by ink and metal.

And she knows why. She’s lived his pain every single day, since the day he left.

Changed by time, Rex doesn’t remember the girl from his past. If only she could do the same.

Will she get the absolution she’s spent her life seeking?

Or will he continue Fighting to Forget?

My Review

Complimentary copy given by the author in exchange for an honest review

It is no secret that I love books about MMA fighters – these men, physically strong, almost invincible, all show their vulnerabilities when a good woman comes into their life. We are shown that they are just like the rest of us: scared of being hurt emotionally, showing weakness and, most of all, scared of being accepted for who they really are.

Ever since meeting Rex in the first book in The Fighting Series, I feel that he has been the odd man out – the guy who we know practically nothing about, the guy who always wears a mask. It should come as no surprise, then, that I have been extremely anxious to get his story.

And what a story it is…

Rex does not remember anything from his past from the moment when he woke up in a hospital bed as a ten-year-old boy and he was told that he had tried to commit suicide. And he does not actually believe that that is what he attempted to do. However, even now, aged 25, he feels wrong, sick and twisted. He has been in therapy since he was seventeen and although he appreciates the help his counsellor, Darren, has tried to provide, he still feels that he is lost somehow. Part of this is due to his dreams – or, rather, nightmares – he has most nights.

If you have read the other books in the series, you know that apart from being a MMA fighter, Rex is the lead singer in a band called Atraxia. He plays at a specific bar every week, and, one night, he meets Mac, one of the waitresses working there. Once they start talking, he does know who she is, and he finds it strange that he has never noticed her until now.

Mac has secrets of her own, and most of them them revolve around Rex: she knew him when they were children and when her name was Gia. Should she approach him, tell him what she knows? She is fully aware of the fact that if she does, she could destroy Rex and their budding romance…she could lose him again.

This book deals with some incredibly difficult subject matters: child abuse and molestation, and although I find books dealing with these themes incredibly difficult to read, I do not shy away from them. The fact of the matter is that these horrific and tragic atrocities happen all over the world, and it does not help burying your head in the sand, pretending that they do not.

And I have to say that although I felt some bile rising in my throat on more than one occasion while reading this book, I never – not once – felt that I could not finish it. This author handles the subject with the greatest of care, and you can feel how much both Rex and Mac/Gia are hurting because of the things they were subjected to. Furthermore, you can absolutely feel how much Miss Salsbury loves these characters and how much she wants them to succeed in their lives.

Rex and his issues – being kind of OCD, showering many times throughout the day, etc. – are described in a way that is very realistic. He longs for love but due to the lack of memories about his past life, he does not believe that he can find and hold it. He is afraid of uncovering his past fully, and that part of his personality also felt real to me. Rex is sweet, caring, sensitive, and you just want to wrap your arms around him and hoild him close.

As for Gia: I admire her so much! She is incredibly strong, yet vulnerable, and also very charming and feisty. She, too, fears rejection because of her past, but she is in a better place mentally than Rex when we first meet her. I love her independence, her willingness to give Rex all that he needs and how protective she is of him as well. She is, plain and simple, the perfect partner for Rex.

One of the things I love about reading a certain book is when I get surprised. And this book has some twists and turns I did not anticipate at all. I love it! I found myself completely immersed in unraveling Rex’ past, learning everything I could about him as the story progressed. And my heart broke for Gia more than once…Yes, she is a very strong woman, but only while having a purpose: avenging Rex and herself for the hand life dealt them when they were children. Once that purpose is gone, she is left vulnerable, unsure and scared.

It would be a great disservice to you, my readers, if I reveal too much of the story line, because this, to me, truly is a book you simply have to lose yourselves in. To me, the story of Rex & Gia centers around “choices”: the choices that were taken from them when they were children, and the choices that they have to make years later when they are adults. But it is also a story about hope: hope that you can beat the odds, that you can lead a perfectly normal and happy life despite of what you were subjected to when you were young. And that, to me, is so uplifting and so life-affirming that I cannot help but smile when I think about it.

I have been a huge fan of Miss Salsbury’s ever since her first novel, and I honestly think that she becomes better and better with each story that she chooses to tell us. Her writing is honest, deeply emotional and so very real. And while the nature of the subject matters is so tragic, and slightly darker than the author’s previous books, please do not think that this is not a romance. Because it most certainly is. I was rooting for Rex and Gia to find the strength and courage to unravel their different pasts, and although my heart broke while uncovering their secrets and thoughts, I also found myself sighing happily from time to time.

I know that I have left out many details in my review, and it is quite on purpose. I want you to let go of your apprehension regarding the subject matters and take a chance if you feel unsure about reading this book. The love story of Rex & Gia is one of the most beautiful I have ever read, and I now find myself adding “Fighting To Forget”  to My Favourite Books shelf where the previous two books in The Fighting Series already have a spot of their own. Miss Salsbury: thank you for your bravery, for your honesty, for your compassion…in short: thank you for giving us Rex & Gia’s story. It is very inspiring, beautiful and romantic. I truly love it and I know that I will read it many times in the years to come.
