My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a quick, steamy read with a strong-willed heroine and a gorgeous sexy-as-sin hero, I definitely recommend that you read this book.

Meet Emily: she has been burnt by her past boyfriend, Adam, and even though it has been a year since she broke it off with him, she is still not ready or willing to jump into a new relationship. However, her strong feelings about this subject become muddled when she meets Julien Belmont when she is out clubbing with her friends one night.

“Foreign men and their accents. Why did we girls have to be such suckers for a beautiful man with an accent?!” (Emily)

Julien is, without a doubt, a man accustomed to getting his way and the minute he lays eyes on Emily, he wants her.

They share a night filled with VERY steamy sex (honestly, my ears got quite red while reading this scene) but when morning comes, Emily is still not sure if she wants to trust Julien with her heart. And then drama ensues: by accident, Emily finds out that Julien is, in fact, married! Yes, married! At this point in time, I was quite ready to throw my Kindle across the room because I did NOT see this coming, at all – but I did not do this, I persevered and read the entire story in one sitting. And I will not tell you more about the actual drama but suffice it to say that there is lots of it.

Emily is a great character: sassy, smart, and as I already mentioned above, she is a very strong woman. I like her “voice” very much, and I could completely relate to her when it came down to her very conflicting feelings towards Julien and her ex-boyfriend, Adam.

And Julien…? Well, he is very alpha in the bedroom, but quite confused about his feelings as well. He does not understand the pull he feels when he is near Emily, and he is quite determined to make her his.

“This woman…she had somehow gotten to me, weakened me and brought out a side of me that I didn’t know existed.” (Julien)

His marriage of convenience to Charlette, their reasons behind it, left me a bit…well, angry, actually. But I love it when books make me feel very strong emotions, whether they be negative or positive ones. So well done, Miss Black!

As this is a novella, this review is rather short – but I do not want to spoil it for you. The story is solid, the dual POVs make me a very happy bookaholic, and one of the major factors as to why I enjoyed the story so much is that I found myself feeling sympathy towards ALL the characters. Even Charlette and Adam have redeeming qualities, and I can honestly say that I have absolutely no idea about what will happen in the next two installments! I love that!

So, to sum up: this is, yes, a story about a sexy billionaire, which we have seen quite a lot of already, but it is so different at the same time; further, the feelings of both Emily and Julien are portrayed in a way that make you believe them; last, the supporting characters all play a very important part in the story as well, and they, too, come across as very believable characters. The author’s writing is very good, and it has a nice flow to it.

Although I would have liked to get to know Emily and Julien better – because this IS the first book in the series – I am confident that I will get my wish granted in the next book, “Coverup”, and I cannot wait to read it.

Thank you so much for letting me interview you, Kim!

1)    First of all: Who is Kim Black? I am just your average girl from New York who grew up loving to read books. When I was younger, I would read everything I could get my hands on. Actually my best friend and I would have competitions to see who could read more books. LOL As I got older, I started writing poetry and then little short stories here and there. It wasn’t until last year that I was introduced to the world of Erotic Romance Novels but once I started reading the genre, I got hooked.

2)    Where did the inspiration for “Discovered'” come from? When did the idea of the story come to you? Initially I decided to write a suspense novel but once I began writing, I knew that it wasn’t the story I wanted to write. Somewhere along my new discovery of Erotic Romances last year, I fell in love with the genre. So, I scraped the suspense novel and started again… This time with Discovered, wanting to give the readers what I had been getting from the new list of authors who had made me fall in love with the genre; passion, lust, drama and story that they would get completely lost in.

3)    How long did it take you to write the book? I started writing Discovered in the beginning of September. I wasn’t finished completely, edits included until earlier this month.

4)    Are any of your characters based on people from real life? Or are they entirely fictional? It’s funny that you ask because I think each female character is a piece of my personality. Emily is the girl who doesn’t trust easy and runs away when things get too hard for her although she doesn’t believe she does that. Suzie is a no-nonsense; tell it like it is woman who lives her life by the day. Diana is the caring, shy, over-looked girl who is the nurturing motherly type. For the guys, they are pretty much made-up characters lol

5)    Who did you connect the most with, Emily or Julien? Emily of course lol I guess it’s easier to understand and connect with her more because I am a woman and I know what its like to get your heart broken by a man to the point where you feel like you can never trust another.

6)    Did you know how the story would end from the beginning? Or did the book almost take on a life of its own? Honestly I don’t know where the story will lead me until I start writing. I know that an author should sit down and write out the plot and the details but where is the fun in that? lol I like to sit in front of my computer and just let my fingers move. There are times I start typing and it’s amazing, and then there are times when I have to hit backspace but I like it that way. I just let the story come to me.

7)    Did certain scenes make you blush while writing them? 😉 Heck yeah! All the sex scenes lol It’s one thing to read those scenes and it’s a completely different thing to write them lol I kept wondering if people are going to think that I am drawing from my own sex life lol But nonetheless, I think I managed to make each scene better then the last.

8)    Do you have any specific rituals when you sit down to write? I mostly write when at night, when everyone else at home is asleep. Normally I was grab my blanket, head over to the living room and get nice and comfy on the couch with my laptop and write till the sun came up.

9)    Do you use music to get you in the right frame of mind while writing a certain scene? No not music but the tv is on lol I like the sound of my late night comedies in the background lol I know it’s weird lol

10)  What are the top 3 songs on your iPod right now? Marl Anthony – Vivir Mi Vida, Tamar Braxton – Love & War, and Adele – Someone Like You

11)  I am very much looking forward to reading the next installment in the Cover series – can you tell us a little bit about what’ll happen next? Without giving any spoilers, of course. The next book in the series is COVERUP and all I can say is expect more sexy scenes, more unexpected plots and if you have already picked your teams, (Team Adam, Team Julien, Team Emily and Team Charlette) you might switch up by the end of this book. The characters all step their game up in COVERUP!

12)  Name 3-5 Fun Facts about yourself!

1)    I try to read a book a day unless the book is really long and take me two days

2)    I have hundreds of books on my Kindle that are still on my to-be-read list but I still search for books to download every week lol making the list never ending lol

3)    Though the book has finally released, it still hasn’t fully hit me that now I am a published author.

My Review

I do believe that this is only the second time in my (albeit short) career as a book blogger that I have wished that I was able to give a book more than 5 stars. I honestly believe that Pepper Winters has outdone herself with this book.

This is a very difficult review for me to write. Please do not misunderstand me: I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The difficulty lies in the fact that I hate the language barrier more than usual as I will never be able to do the book justice. But I will do my very best. Further, I will not give a synopsis of the story as such for two reasons:

1) the blurb says so much already, and 2) I fear that I will spoil it for you if I write too much. This also means that my review will be shorter than others I have written, and I hope that you will not be disappointed.

QQ begins just where “Tears Of Tess” left us. Tess has returned to Q of her own free will, but even though Q knows that she says that they belong together, he is still hesitant, constantly afraid of unleashing the sadist within for fear of Tess running away from him.

“You’re worth every fight. Every argument and bump in the road. I’ll fight because I’m falling for you, Q.” (Tess)

His relentless torment is heartbreaking to read and you really FEEL it when you read the chapters written from Q’s viewpoint.

“What monster wanted to capture the blood of the woman he’d given his life to?” (Q)

The couple is not allowed to be together for long, though: Tess is brutally taken from Q, kidnapped by the same barbaric men who stole her in Mexico and this time, they intend to break her completely.

As with the first book in the series, I have only admiration for Tess: she is so strong, willing to fight but so vulnerable at the same time. No human being should go through all the horrible things she is forced to endure and reading certain scenes made me want to throw up – yes, they are that vile, sick and cruel.

As for Quincy Mercer – Q…I hardly know where to begin! This truly is his story. He longs to unleash the beast within and he (literally) craves Tess’ blood – his need to possess her completely and utterly is described in such a way that you cannot help but feel compassion towards him. His search for Tess is relentless, and his guilt for not keeping her safe is palpable: his torment and anguish are heartbreaking. Getting inside this tormented hero’s head, learning his thoughts and fears, is written with such passion, and I now understand Q so much better than before.

The journey these two characters go through is filled with horror, but they do find their way back together. It does, however, take out so much strength of them both and I was biting my nails and almost pulling out my hair while reading all the hardships they both go through.

“You’re my obsession, I’m your possession – You own the deepest part of me – You crawled into the darkness, set my monster free – So scream, bleed, call out to me – But never say stop, never flee.” (Q)

Is this book dark? Yes. Disturbing? Absolutely. Delicious? Oh, there is no doubt about that! Honestly, although I have never read a dark romance as dark as this, it does not bother me one tiny bit. I believe I have previously described this author’s writing as “magical” and QQ truly is a wonderfully raw, painful, yet uplifting book. I am more than thrilled to learn that there will be one more book in the series as I am far from ready to say goodbye to Tess and Q yet. Miss Winters, you have once again written a masterpiece and I applaud you – AGAIN – for giving us such amazingly dark, yet beautiful, characters.

Tess watched remotely as I piled my arms full of things and headed back to the bed. Placing them on the towel at the foot of the four poster, I looked at Tess. “Tie me up.”

I never thought I’d ever say those words. But I needed her to bind me. I wouldn’t be able to go through with this if she didn’t. I’d run like a fucking coward, or lash out and hurt her.

She picked up the leather cuffs, the buckles clinking. “Where?”

Trying to curb the terror and anger and so many fucking things, I forced myself to sit on the mattress and lie down.

My heart was a fucking crazy thing going a billion miles an hour; I couldn’t look at Tess. I couldn’t look anywhere but at the large canopy above my head. The four posters were sturdy—half a fucking tree sturdy—once she bound me, I wouldn’t be able to get free.

My stomach rolled and I swore I would be sick. Shit. Oh, shit. What the fuck am I doing?

Tess glided closer to the bed, looking like a malnourished ghost. She eyed the cuff, then my limbs. My fists pressed against my thighs, every muscle locked tight.

I hadn’t undressed. The element of having jeans and a T-shirt on was my only armament; I wanted to keep it that way.

I gritted my teeth, spreading my legs for her.

She swallowed and obediently looped the soft leather around my ankle.

Black spots appeared in my vision as she tightened the buckle around the bedpost. She fastened it and I wriggled.

“You need to do it tighter. I can get free.” I hated every word. I wanted to chop out my tongue for being such a traitor, but I wasn’t doing this for me. I was doing this for Tess. To somehow break the barrier she’d fortified. If it took dynamite in the form of making me shatter, then so be it.

Tess nodded, tightening the buckle until it bit into my skin. Heat travelled up my leg, causing me to shiver with helplessness.

Torturing me with fluttering touches and slowness, Tess secured my other ankle before sighing heavily. She looked at me with a thousand wishes in her eyes and no hope. Moving toward the head of the bed, she chose a length of silk rope.

Our eyes never left each other as she bent and captured my hand with hers. The moment her delicate fingers touched my trembling skin, I bucked. My cock roared to life and all I wanted to do was kiss her, fuck her, never let her fucking go again.

She bit her lip, her eyes darkening just a little.

“Embrasse moi!” Kiss me, I demanded, capturing her hand with mine.

“Well, then, what do you want from me, Olivia?” he asked loudly, watching her walk away.

She spun around abruptly and searched his eyes. “I don’t want you to always feel like you have to come and help me, Alex,” she whimpered, her throat beginning to close up again, thinking about the man who was no longer hers. “I just want you to stand by my side while I try to help myself.” Her eyes narrowed, staring at him as he remained silent on the busy Boston street. “Do you think you can do that?” She looked at him as snow continued to blanket the sidewalk, desperately wanting him to say that yes, he could do that. My Review

When I read the synopsis of this book, I was not entirely sure if it would be to my liking, but I am happy to say that I was completely invested in the book after having read the first few chapters. It is a beautifully written story about surviving horrific pasts, about hope, loss, and, ultimately, love.

The story centres around two women, Carly and Tabitha, who, although coming from entirely different upbringings, both have suffered in the past and who become connected through an unborn child, Emily. We are told their different stories through both past and present and through alternate POVs, and I for one was never confused when the timelines and POVs changed from one character to the other.

The prologue of the book is very difficult to read as it describes how Carly is raped one night – her virginity is stolen from her in the most brutal and horrific way – and as is the case with many rape victims, she chooses to try to forget about the entire experience. She is not being left alone to do that, though: her friends – Becca, Callie and Manny – corner her a few weeks later over wine (later known as Wine Wednesday) and she tells them about the rape. Naturally, she is comforted by them all, and they convince her to go to the clinic on campus to get a physical exam done.

After having had many tests done, Carly finds out that she has been infected with chlamydia, and this will prove to have an important impact on her life later on.

When reading Carly’s story, we are also introduced to Kyle who is so warm, caring and, quite literally, Carly’s hero later in the book. Obviously, I do not want to give too much away, but let me just tell you this: Kyle shows Carly what it means to be loved unconditionally, he gives her strength and he helps her overcoming the rape and gives her hope for a wonderful future.

“I love this man with all that I am and I love the father he is going to be.” (Carly)

Now, Tabitha is an entirely different character from Carly: having been abandoned by her biological mother just hours after she was born, she grew up in different foster homes. Her first foster mother was tragically killed when Tabitha was only 7 years old, and she was never given the same kind of love afterwards.

“I have no one. I’m alone. Alone in the present and alone with my past. Alone with my demons.” (Tabitha)

Tabitha is so lost and lonely, and your heart will ache while reading her story. She is pregnant for the second time in her young life (she is only 21 years old) and as with her previous child, she has decided to give up this one – Emily – for adoption. This is how Carly and Tabitha’s lives become entwined, and as I stated above, these two women are so different from each other. But one thing that binds them is their love for baby Emily.

Even though Tabitha has made some bad choices in the past, I do not blame her at all. She is yearning to have what Carly has – a loving, doting husband – but she does not really know how to get what she wants. She is, after all, very young and she needs to heal and find her place in the world before she is able to move on in life.

Reading about these women made me feel so many different emotions: sadness, for one, but also happiness and hope. I was torn between wanting Tabitha to keep Emily and knowing that, given her situation, it just was not possible, and then hoping, until the very end, that Carly and Kyle would get their “Forever Family” like they had always wanted.

Learning all about Carly’s feelings towards her unborn child, reading her journal entries, made me cry many times. And you should know by now that evoking tears is the greatest gift an author can give me because it makes me FEEL, it makes me truly believe in the characters, and – what is just as important – it means that the story is REAL to me. Miss Stiles truly made me believe in her story – the pace is never rushed, and the secondary characters all compliment the main characters. I honestly believe that this author is very talented as her writing sucked me right in from the beginning.

Now, the epilogue…well, again, I do not want to say too much, BUT I have to warn you by telling you this: Tabitha’s story does not end in this book. I find myself happy with this fact, actually, because I really long for her to find her happy-ever-after. This is one cliffhanger I do not mind one bit!

All in all, I loved this story. It is written with passion, and the only thing I miss is that I would have liked to get more scenes with Carly and Kyle in the past – while they were still in college – but that is just personal preference as I am a real romance junkie (*wink*). I really cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

My Review

This is, without a doubt, a must-read for all bookaholics. It is an amazingly beautiful story about love, friendship, the heartbreak of war, and overcoming your past. I was feeling teary almost entirely throughout the book but not solely out of sadness. No, the story has plenty of fun moments, and the love story made me sigh happily on many occasions as well.

The story centres around Ryan, Finlay and Finlay’s brother, Jake. These three form a friendship as children and because of Ryan’s less than happy home, Jake and Finlay’s parents – Julie and Mike – kind of adopts him and he becomes like a second son to them.
Ryan has demons to conquer even as a child and spends most of his time with his friends instead of at home. He decides at an early age (just 10 years old) that he wants to become a soldier when he grows up. It becomes his sole focus throughout his youth and he will not let anything stand in his way of reaching his goal. Not even love.
And yes, how strongly this man feels: even as a young teen, he knows that he loves Finlay with all of his being, but he does not want to stand in her way of reaching her own dreams. So he never tells her his true feelings towards her – love – until he is an adult and gets home from one of his deployments.
Throughout the book, Ryan deals with issues aplenty: guilt, a past he cannot let go, and his warring emotions about letting himself love the woman who has always held his heart, and overcoming his fears of not being the right man for her.

“Being a soldier had been his escape, his flight from the demons that bound him, and Fin had been the only one who could stop him from running forever. As long as she was here, he could run as far and as fast as he wanted, but for her he would return.” (Ryan)

Finlay has loved Ryan since she was a teenager but ever since he left to become a soldier, she has not heard one word from him. 6 years have passed, in fact, and she is in a relationship with her high school sweetheart, Ian, when Ryan and Jake come home. I do not blame her one bit for being downright furious with Ryan for having taken himself completely out of her life.
I really loved Ryan: although physically strong, he is very vulnerable on the inside – a very tormented hero indeed. He is a loyal, protective alpha male and he always puts other people’s needs before his own. Too much so, which Finlay is quick to point out to him. I could truly feel his anguish, and his heartbreak when Jake is killed in action made me ugly-cry. Truly.

And Finlay? Well, she is spunky, sassy and smart – exactly what I look for in a heroine. You have to admire her for the way she keeps fighting for Ryan, for never letting him doubt that he is her whole heart. True, she may not have made the wisest choices in the past but as soon as this couple starts sorting through their issues together, she steps up and never falters.

“I miss you. Each day hurts a little more than the last. When I close my eyes at night I feel your hands running over my bare skin as though you’re still here. I feel your hand resting on my chest at night like you used to do and I know it’s because you like to feel the beat of my heart beneath your fingers. Do you know you always sleep deeper that way? Some nights you cry out in your sleep and it hurts just hearing it, but then your hand eventually settles over my heart and your breathing evens out.” (Finlay)

The tension between Ryan and Finlay is so palpable and I had to fan myself many times while reading the very steamy scenes. They are very vivid, but tastefully written, and I never felt that it became too much. Ultimately, it was the love story between them that captivated me and even though I wanted to shout at Ryan many times – trust me, he IS a very frustrating man – I would not change a single thing about him. He has to overcome his fears on his own and being in Afghanistan actually helps him to do that: he realizes that he cannot live without Finlay and that he has to stop being scared.

The way Miss McCarthy describes the scenes that take place in Afghanistan made my stomach clench, my adrenaline spike and my heart was pounding so loud while I was reading. I even got goosebumps many times throughout the story and you will all have to agree with me on this: THAT is a sign of a great story-teller.

I have been very vague at some places in my review, I know – but I am so afraid that I will reveal too much of the story, because you NEED to experience this book yourself. In my opinion, it is a work of art, and I already love this author’s writing style – it is passionate, heartbreaking and simply beautiful. I did not want the book to end and I was sad, but also elated, when I read the epilogue. The supporting characters – Jake, Rachael (Finlay’s best friend), Kyle (one of Ryan’s close friends from the military) and especially Julie and Mike all play a pivotal part in the book, and I cannot help but wonder – hoping, really – if we will get to meet them again.

This book has now been put on my Favourite Books shelf, and I know that I will read it many times in the years to come. It has definitely made me think more about all our soldiers around the world fighting for us in Afghanistan, and it has made me very humble to the fact that we should never take freedom for granted. Miss McCarthy: Thank you for writing a book with such a difficult subject matter – the war in Afghanistan – and with such believable characters. Your words have most definitely captured my heart.

Kate McCarthy grew up in a small town outside of Port Macquarie, Australia. Raised in a house just a short walk to the beach, Kate enjoyed the peaceful, relaxed atmosphere and friendships that come from being raised in a friendly, small town area.
She now resides in Brisbane, Australia, a city in the state of Queensland where she works as an accountant, along with a sideline wedding cake business and her writing.

Later that morning after their workout and shower, Jake fell asleep on the couch. Feeling at a loss with nothing but time on his hands, Ryan wandered down the hall towards Fin’s room. She was sitting at a little study nook in the corner, laptop open with one foot resting on her chair. She was wearing a tank top and a little pair of shorts. Leaning up against the doorframe, he couldn’t tear his eyes away from those long, delectable legs.

As though sensing his presence, she turned in her chair. He forced his eyes upwards, catching a sexy flush fill her cheeks at his blatant perusal.

“Morning, Ryan.” She took off her black framed reading glasses and tossed them on the desk.

“Morning, Fin,” he replied.

Against his better judgment, Ryan pushed away from the door and walked farther into the room. Fin hadn’t changed at all and neither had his desire for her. His heart kicked over when she met his eyes. He knew everything he was feeling right now was written all over him, but he couldn’t seem to shut it off.

Her eyelids fluttered closed and she whispered, “Why now?”

Ryan took a deep breath. “I don’t know,” he replied honestly.

He shouldn’t still be feeling this way after so many years. Why was he doing this to her, and to himself? It was better for everyone if he stayed away like he was supposed to.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come. I’ll go stay at the barracks.” He turned to leave.

“Ryan!” she called out. Scrambling out of the chair, she grabbed his arm as he was halfway out the door.

“Fin,” he warned, looking down at her hand pointedly.

She took a step closer and he breathed her in, her scent like jasmine on a hot summer’s day. He was surprised when he looked into her eyes and saw anger burning hotly in their depths.

“Six years, Ryan. Do you know how hurt I was, each day passing by and getting nothing—not even a note or an email? I didn’t just lose you. I lost my brother too. Both of you left me, and I was okay with that. I understood that this was what you needed to do, so I moved on. I built a life that doesn’t include you. That was what I had to do.” She paused and raised a shaky hand to cup his cheek. “I’d have given you my entire heart if you’d only asked, but it’s not yours now. It’s not yours.”

Ryan closed his eyes, agony for losing what was never his rose in his chest until he felt strangled by it. He placed his hand over hers, holding it there until she tugged it away.

“You’re right,” Fin told him. “You should stay on the barracks … but I don’t want you to. Damn you, Ryan,” she whispered fiercely. “I don’t want you to.”

Ryan used his bulk to crowd her against the wall until there was no room for her to move. Leaning one hand against the wall, he grabbed her hip with the other. Her breathing rose rapidly and he leaned in, ducking his head until their mouths hovered a mere breath apart.

“Why can’t I force myself to leave?” He rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. “I hurt too. For six years I fought every day not to think of you, and I lost, because every day you were all I could see. You were the best thing in my life—so sweet and innocent, and so goddamn tempting.” His hand strayed from her hip and slid down to grip her ass. He swallowed the groan. “I stayed away so you could move on.”
