Synopsis

** CAN BE READ AS A STAND ALONE NOVEL**

Kayden Michaels has a past filled with sex, addiction, and heartache. A past that he’s avoided sharing with the love of his life, Sophia, and held close to his core not risking rejection. Needing to get his addictions in check and gain control of his life for the sake of his family, Kayden is forced to confront his past and make amends for the path he’s walked.

Kayden must recount every carnal act and the betrayal from those he’s loved to identify the triggers that spur his addictions and overcome it all to be worthy of Sophia’s love – his sole reason to exist.

This is NOT a novella.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

It is no secret that when I read the first book in the Love At Last Series, “Untangle Me”, I had a bit of trouble connecting with Kayden. So when I learned that we would get his story, I really hoped that it would change the way I saw him. And I am happy to say that the author succeeded in making me see Kayden in a different light.
Before I begin my review, I would like to say that I do not think that you should read this book unless you have read “Untangle Me” first.

The story begins with Kayden telling us about his home life and how he was introduced to alcohol for the first time. Like so many others, him and his friends goofed around, trying liquor for the first time, which, I believe, is just normal adolescent behaviour.  While growing up, he had a very strained relationship with his father and he did not really have a proper father figure who would teach him about life. He had to figure a lot of things out all on his own.

There are a pretty number of women in Kayden’s life until he meets Bridget, his first love. She is from a completely different world than him but does not let it come between them. Kayden has some of the happiest moments in life with her and he proposes, thinking that the two of them will grow old together.
Unfortunately, Kayden experiences his first real heartbreak just days before he and Bridget are meant to get married, and he turns to the bottle like so many others in order to cope.

Over the course of the next number of years, Kayden’s life is filled with women, drugs and booze. I will not go into further details about what happens in the book, because that defeats the purpose of a review. But I have to mention Danielle, who becomes his wife, and the subsequent loss they suffer together. My heart broke while reading about it and it definitely makes me understand Kayden’s need to always staying unattached in the years after.

“The letter slipped from my fingers and drifted to the floor. I stood there with my heart beating out of my chest. My body frozen in place. She left me?” (Kayden)

When you experience heartache and loss, you tend to turn to the wrong things because you want to forget and because these things make you feel alive. Further, I believe that Kayden’s line of work does not exactly help matters, which he himself also points out: several unattached guys living together, whose only passion in life is their work, makes for a bad cocktail when you have an addiction you do not want to acknowledge.

Now, as with the first book in the series, “Kayden: The Past” is most definitely a book that I would classify as erotica. Reading about Kayden’s sexcapades – and yes, there are many – will make you all hot and bothered. But I do not think that they are too much, and they show us, the readers, that Kayden is a dominant, alpha male with a healthy appetite for pleasure. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this and, in fact, I do believe that many women would like their partners to be much like him.

I still do not entirely understand why Kayden stays with Lisa for so long, but I do understand him being afraid of failing at yet another relationship. And I actually have to respect him for holding out for so long and really trying to make things work with her.

Reading about how Kayden’s feelings towards Sophia progress after they get to know each other through texting and their subsequent meeting made this romantic bookaholic extremely happy. I always admit that I love it when I read a book that shows the POV of the male protagonist, and this was no different.

“When you truly love someone, you stand by their side and help them through the darkest time in their life. She was meant to come into my life when she did – she saved me.” (Kayden)

All in all, I really enjoyed getting to know Kayden and reading about his life. He has certainly always had to fight for the things he wants, which seems very unfair at times, and I honestly believe that you cannot falter him for becoming addicted to alcohol. I would also like to point out that Miss Bliss’ writing style is, once again, very good and it had me riveted to the pages from the beginning of the story. I am really looking forward to reading the author’s next nook “Throttle Me”, which will centre on Suzy, Sophia’s roommate. I have a feeling that her romantic heart will get some bumps and bruises along the way, but I hope she will get her HEA in the end.

“You have a girlfriend, Kayden?” Danielle asked.

“Danielle, if I did, I wouldn’t have fucked Candy last night. I’m a one woman guy.”

“She has a boyfriend, but that didn’t stop you.”

“I didn’t know anything about that. She’s flirted with me for months. I offered and she accepted, simple as that.” I sipped my drink. “What other people do is their business, but when I’m taken, I’m fucking taken. I’ve never been, nor will I ever be a cheater.”

“Hmmm.” She stared into my eyes and licked her lips. Fuck, she’s killing me.  I swallowed hard watching her tongue glide across her lips, wishing they were licking my cock. This is Ron’s girl, stop the dirty fucking thoughts. I needed to remember who she is and that my cock would never be entering that pretty sweet pussy I knew she would have.

I looked away unable to take the torture any longer.

Synopsis

“If I let go, will you catch me?”

He had wanted her to help him win his ex-girlfriend back. She had wanted to teach him a few lessons on how to treat a woman. Neither one had planned for the unexpected.

I couldn’t stand by and watch. It hit too close to home. I had to run fast and far to get away and forget him. He weaseled his way into my life, making me question rules I lived by and turned my orderly life upside down. I’m falling apart and coming undone. I don’t do that. I’m Madison Stuart. I live life by my rules. I won’t be derailed by a man. I won’t…I can’t.

She’s gone. I’m desperate and going insane. I’ll do whatever it takes to find her. I don’t know when it happened, but I won’t let her go, not like this. What has she done to me? I’m Rick Marin for crying out loud. I don’t chase women, but she’s not just a woman. She’s Maddy–my Maddy–and I need her.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for and honest review.

Although this is #2 in The Do Over Series, I believe you can read it as a standalone novel. However, I would not advice it as I believe you miss out on the real Rick Experience if you do not read book one.

This review will focus mainly on Rick and Madison instead of the actual storyline as there is so much going on in the book that I fear I will reveal too much once I get started. But first a bit of a warming, though: this books ends in a major cliffhanger…Yes, you read it right. And I know I have said it before: I do not mind cliffhangers at all, but THIS one? Well, this one makes me a bit annoyed because it is huge and I do not know when the next installment in the series comes out.

I confess that I did not much like either Rick or Madison much after having read the first book. But you know me by now: I like to keep an open mind about the books I read, and I really think that this second book in the series is better than the first.

Rick really is a strange man: in some ways, he is a complete player and one should not believe a word that comes out of his mouth. But on the other hand, you cannot help feeling sympathy towards him as he struggles to get Madison to understand the depth of his feelings. I really enjoyed getting to know him better and to see the real man underneath the salesman mask he usually wears. Of course, he is still a bit of a douche – he would not be Rick otherwise – but he is most definitely a likeable one.

“I can’t live with her, and I can’t live without her. I’m officially straight jacket material.” (Rick)

And even though, in theory, Rich should be all kinds of wrong for Madison, he is actually perfect for her: strong-willed, alpha, yet sweet when he has to be. He sees behind Madison’s mask – much to her dismay – and he keeps hanging on, even when he finds it extremely difficult to do so. And is that not what we all want in life? Having a partner that does not let go no matter what life throws at you?

As for Madison…Honestly, in the beginning of the story, she almost gave me whiplash with her mood swings and I cannot blame Rick for being worried about his hair falling out whenever he runs his hands through it *wink*. But once I got to see beneath the tough businesswoman exterior she wears all the time, I had absolutely no problems connecting with her. I even found myself tearing up when I learned about her past, and I felt really sorry for her. I loved her feisty, strong, sassy personality and how she does not let Rick get away with anything. True, she does frustrate me at times with her stubbornness, but she is a woman who, despite everything, really is ruled by her past. She cannot just let go of her past grievances, and I really think that Miss Zaun excels at showing us Madison’s inner turmoil.

“Enough is enough. I didn’t know what tomorrow would hold or what yesterday had meant. I was in the moment, and right then and there, I wanted him, maybe even needed him. “Kiss me like you mean it.” (Madison)

In some ways, Rick and Madison’s relationship should be classified as a bit dysfunctional: they fight all the time, they always think they are right when they are not, and both are really bad at compromising…Having said that, it works for them, and as their story progresses, they learn to trust each other. They are still very stubborn people, of course, and neither one of them change that much throughout the book, but that is what makes their love story believable to me: if Rick had, all of a sudden, stopped being manipulative, and Madison had just let him take over completely, I would not find it real. In my opinion, real people do not change that much and I find it refreshing that this book couple learn that their strengths and weaknesses are part of why they are perfect for each other. I really cannot write this review without mentioning how the banter between this couple made me laugh so hard many times. Oh, and let us not forget the sex scenes…Phew! They are, indeed, very hot and steamy.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book: the characters are flawed, but real; the storyline had my adrenaline pumping at high speed on more than one occasion, and the sweet moments made my romantic heart sigh happily. The writing is really well and had me riveted to the pages from page one, and I honestly cannot wait to read the conclusion to Rich and Madison’s story, which, I hope, we will not have to wait too long for.

In a tender voice, he said, “Maddy, you’ve got to be one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Tonight though, you’re also breathtaking.”

“Thank you.” I accepted his compliment while draping the linen napkin across my lap, and I smiled to myself.

“I think we’re making progress.” He winked. “Normally, you’d insult me when I said something nice to you.”

“True.” I shrugged and said offhandedly, “You’ve annoyed the shit out of me today. I think I deserve having you kiss my ass.”

“You know, I’m the best ass-kisser there is.” He ran his fingers along my back. “Why stop with the ass when you’ve got an amazing body that requires the same level of care and attention?”

“Is this your best?” I gave him a side-glance. “I’m counting on the wow factor. I want it to be so good that I actually believe you.”

He shifted in his seat and cocked his head. “I don’t know why you ever doubt me.”

“For starters, you’re a liar and a manipulator.”

“Minor technicality,” he said in a serious tone.

I laughed. “Let’s add comedian as well.”

His eyes widened, and I held back a giggle.

“You really believe that, don’t you?” I asked.

“I’ve never hidden that from you. In fact, you’re the only person I’ve ever been completely honest with. You accept me for who I am, kick me in the ass on a constant basis, and call me out on my bullshit.” He reached for his wine and took a sip. “Let me put it to you this way. You disappeared on me, and I pulled every single trick I had to find you. Think about that. When have I ever had to work this hard to get a woman to talk to me? Never.”

Enjoy the excerpt, everyone!

I stepped into his space, backed him up against the counter, and leant real close so that only he and I could hear what I was about to say.  “Now would be the right time for you and your family to leave.  I don’t like any of the shit that’s just gone down, so unless you want trouble between the two of us, leave now,” I threatened.   When I saw him hesitate, I grabbed a handful of his shirt and snarled, “Did you not understand what I just said, motherfucker?”  We glared at each other for a couple of moments before I let him go, shoving him hard against the counter in the process.  Keeping my eyes trained on his, I slowly stepped back.  Planting my legs wide, I crossed my arms in front of my chest and scowled at him.

Harlow opened her mouth to say something but I caught the movement and flicked my gaze to her for a second, giving her a clear message to stay out of it. She shut her mouth and glared back at me, her eyes widening in a ‘what the fuck’ type gesture.  That shocked the shit out of me, and my concentration was diverted from the asshole to her.  I’d never been given that look by a chick before; usually it was J or Nash who challenged me like that.  I raised my eyebrows at her, and fuck me if she didn’t raise hers right fucking back.

Shay
After waiting ten minutes in Victor’s kitchen, and another ten minutes in my car as it rumbled loudly in the driveway, the princess is finally seated in the black leather bucket seat beside me, arms crossed and looking none too happy about her predicament.
“You going to sit there and pout like a spoiled brat not getting her own way, or you actually going to talk to me?” I look over at the raven haired woman in my passenger seat who still has my groin tight and my breath lost.
She looks my way and scowls. “I don’t even know your name! And anyway, why would I want to talk to one of my father’s underlings who probably doesn’t know his head from his ass? Hell, even your hot ass muscle car is probably paid for with dirty fucking money.” She smirks, and I see it—that spark. The fire that I saw burning in her eyes this morning when we met.
I stop at an intersection and wait for the traffic lights to change. “Seems there are a few things we need to clear up, cupcake. My name is Shay, and this hot ass muscle car is mine and mine alone. No dirty fucking money involved. And I can assure you right now, I definitely know my head from my ass. You know what else?” I lean in towards her ear. “I also know where your ass and head are, and right now one is stuck so far up the other, it’s a wonder you don’t need breath mints.”

Synopsis

According to Hayley love is a subject of ridicule, a myth created by hopeless romantics.

When Hayley makes a resolution to declare her loose lifestyle era R.I.P, it’s all good in theory…

That is until she meets Daniel Stark, a well-respected, mid-thirties business man who is known for his short temper, lack of steady relationships as well as his strict preserve of his private life.

Opinionated, sharp tongued Hayley accidently steps into his office leaving Daniel resolved to put Hayley in her place and have her in his bed.

Both Hayley and Daniel can’t avoid the immediate instigation of the attraction between them.

In a unanimously agreed upon verdict by Hayley and her two best friends, Ian the gay self-absorbed, aspiring model and Natasha the witty, borderline neurotic soul mate, Daniel Stark is to be Hayley’s pure physical attraction, emotions aside era closure.

Will it indeed be a closure, or a beginning to something neither Hayley nor Daniel ever bargained for…

My Review

Paperback copy received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Before I begin writing my review of this book, let me warn all you “cliffhanger haters” – personally, I do not mind them at all – out there: yes, there is one. BUT the sequel to the Stark Series, “Inner Core”, releases 31st of January, so you will not have to wait long – so please do not let it stop you from reading this really good debut novel of Sigal Ehrlich.

Now, as the synopsis tells you so much about the story, I will not elaborate that much upon it. But I have to mention the following quote as it sums up this story perfectly and I feel the true beauty in these words:

“To reach the core of true beauty, one must first unravel the many protective layers.”

I really enjoyed getting to know our heroine of the story, Hayley. In the beginning, I thought that she was a very tough girl, but little by little, I saw some other character traits of hers that I loved: she is feisty, funny, sexy, yet so vulnerable on the inside, and she only allows her close friends to see this side of her. I found myself being able to relate to her a great deal, and at no point in time did I find her to be less than real to me. There are so many layers (yes, pun intended) to Hayley, just like there are with people in real life.

It is the same with Daniel, our hero. When we first meet him, the nick name Hayley later calls him when she is angry with him (“Psycho”) seems very apt: he is extremely temperamental, arrogant and determined to get what he wants. All of these characteristics seem very plausible as he IS a very successful businessman. I was not altogether sure that I would like him, but, again, I was pleasantly surprised to discover his more gentle ways when I got to know him better. He has many hidden depths, I believe, and I found myself connecting with him just a bit more than I did with Hayley.

What I also find very refreshing about this new book boyfriend is the fact that he is not your typical “damaged hero” we have been seeing so much of in the indie book world lately. Please DO NOT misunderstand me: I thoroughly enjoy reading stories with those types of heroes, but now and then, it makes me happy when I see something different. Yes, Daniel does have some father issues, but they are definitely not all that define him.

“I look at him and think about how drastically he makes my feelings change from complete rage to complete fondness and then again to uncontrollable lust, and all in a few short hours. Like a collision between a hurricane and a volcano with my emotions in between.” (Hayley)

One of the things I loved about this new book couple was the banter between them – I found myself smiling when reading their email exchanges and even flat-out laughed on more than one occasion. You can definitely feel their intense chemistry right from the beginning, and I almost swooned every time Daniel showed Hayley his sweet side.

“Hayles,” he purrs quietly with closed eyes, his nose grazing my flesh. “I am so yours, more than I’ve ever been mine.” (Daniel)

The only reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is the fact that although we are told that Hayley does not want to do random hookups anymore and that she does not like the way she feels afterwards, I cannot help but wonder exactly why that is? I felt that there was a bit of a mystery here – intentional or not – so I would have liked some elaboration on that. As usual, however, that is solely my personal opinion and other readers may feel differently

This is, hands down, one of the best written books by an independent author I have read. The prose is almost lyrical, in my opinion, but it does not seem unnatural or forced at all. Yes, I did have to get used to it, but I already loved the author’s voice after having read only a few pages of the book. The language is concise and to the point, and I really liked that. The supporting characters – Hayley’s best friends, Natasha and Ian, and Daniel’s mother, Iris – all contribute to the story without taking the focus away from Hayley and Daniel’s romance.

To sum up: I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I know that I will read it many times in the future. Like I said in the beginning of my review, I do not mind cliff hangers – although, I admit that this is a major one! – and I cannot wait to read the next installment in this series. I am so looking forward to getting to know Hayley and Daniel better in the books to come, and I honestly think that Miss Ehrlich is definitely an author you should all pay more attention to as her storytelling is in a class all on its own.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review

Unrequited love is one of the worst feelings ever, is it not? Many of us have probably experienced it at some point in our lives (I know that I have) and let me start this review by saying that Nicole Reed really excels at portraying the feelings of hurt, longing and despair of being hopelessly in love in this book.

Meet Kylie: she is a very successful businesswoman, and even though she is only 25 years old, she believes that she has already met the love of her life. His name is Trent and she met him and his foster brother, Dray, when they were all in college. She has been in love with Trent for seven years, and Dray has been her arch nemesis for just as long.

“My choice of men is summed up in two words: Trent Moss, a kind, caring, loyal, humanitarian with a tortured past that gives him depth and understanding. Okay, so his looks caught my attention first, as I’m sure it does every female.” (Kylie)

Her best friend, Madison (Mads) keeps trying to persuade Kylie to let Trent go, but she cannot do it: he is IT for her even though her feelings are not reciprocated and he spends his time away from home, making the world “a better place”.
Dray, however, IS a constant fixture in Kylie’s life, even though she would rather that he was not. I must say that I do not blame her! His crude remarks, his jabs at her self esteem made me want to punch him on more than one occasion. But I could not help but wonder why he kept antagonizing her and I could not help but looking forward to getting to know him better.

“God, he gets off on our verbal sparring. He’s sick and needs professional help. And why does he have to be so damn good looking? It infuriates me to no end to notice this.” (Kylie)

As fate would have it, Dray suffers a terrible injury while playing a game for the NFL and somehow, Kylie finds herself being persuaded – AGAIN – by Trent to visit him in hospital and suddenly she finds herself extremely attracted to Dray. And what is worse, in her opinion, is the fact that Dray seems to feel the same attraction! Imagine the confusion Kylie feels now: she loves Trent but feels a really strong connection to Dray, the man who has always made sure to treat her like crap.

“Do you feel that, Kylie?” He continues to caress my arm with his hand. “That’s power running between you and me. I never imagined it would be so strong, so intense.” (Dray)

Besides this being a love story, it is a story about facing the consequences of the choices you make in your life and about finding out who you truly are  – Kylie must do a lot of soul searching and find out what – and who – she wants in life.
This is also a book that shows you the true meaning of how illness makes a huge impact on your life: very early on in the book, we meet Kylie’s Aunt Leigh who for years has struggled with breast cancer – and the cancer, sadly, wins out. I confess that I was balling my eyes out at this point in the story because I could truly relate to it. She is a remarkably wise character and seems to know just what to say when Kylie seeks her guidance.

“It’s not the circumstances we find ourselves in that define us, it’s how we overcome them.” (Aunt Leigh)

While I was reading this book, I found myself amused, frustrated and angry many times: amused by Kylie’s inner monologues and her confusion; frustrated by Dray and his arrogance; angry with Trent for, seemingly, being such a douche towards Kylie and always taking advantage of her feelings towards him. But the more I got to know all the characters, I found myself really liking them all – yes, even Trent – and I love it when an author makes me feel that way about the characters. After all, real people have many facets to them, both positive and negative ones, and I applaud Miss Reed for letting those shine through in her story.

I would also like to say that at no point did Kylie’s indecision about Trent and Dray annoy me. Yes, she is confused and does not seem to know what she wants for a long time, BUT let me remind you that she is only 25. Your twenties are about making mistakes, owning  up to them and learning to go after the things you want, and THAT is what Kylie does: she is, in my opinion, so real and you know how important that is to me in a story.

I cannot end this review without saying a bit more about Mads, Kylie’s friend: she is hilarious! Honestly, in my opinion, she is rather crazy, temperamental and honest to a fault. Actually, she is a wonderful friend to Kylie who speaks her mind – always – and I really hope that we will get her story from the author at some point.

All in all, I fell in love with this book: all the characters felt believable to me, the storyline was both fun and serious, and I could really feel every emotion Kylie went through. That is why I am giving this book my highest rating and I cannot wait to see what the author concocts for us in the future.

Enjoy the excerpt, everyone.

“Do you feel that, Kylie?”  He continues to caress my arm with his hand.  “That’s power running between you and me.  I never imagined it would be so strong, so intense.  Can you even conceive what my body rubbing against yours well feel like?  Please unlike either one of us has ever experienced.  Sex in its greatest form.”

His words hypnotize me, seduce me, and demolish my inhibitions so that even my common sense agrees with what he is saying.  I’ve never wanted sex as much as I want it with Dray at this moment.  In my head, I can see images of us entwined together, his dark against my light skin.  The sight, in my mind’s eye, so clear, so erotic, that my breathing becomes erratic just with the thought.  Closing my eyes, I feel his fingers glide to my breasts, circling the tip through my clothes.  My clit throbs in tune with his movements almost as if he is touching me there.  Dray grasps my nipple tightly as he pulls and squeezes.  The dual motion overwhelms my senses, and an orgasm overcomes me, rippling up and through my body.  Clenching my legs together, I moan as I ride it out.  My body shakes, tingling with the aftermath of what just happened, and what I need to be happening again; however, sanity returns with me still sitting on the side of the couch.  Opening my eyes, Dray stares at me like he knows my every thought.  At least now, he has a supreme satisfied smile on his mouth and his shorts are in a superior tent out front.

“Damn girl.  That is about the hottest sight I’ve ever seen.  Had you been butt-naked, I think I would have exploded right along with you.”
