My Review

As you all know, I have been a major fan of Miss Winters from the beginning, and I will read anything this amazingly talented author writes. I was, however, a bit worried this time, because I did not think that the plot – a 600-year-old debt a prestigious family has to pay another family – would work in this modern society that we live in. But my doubts became nonexistent as soon as I had read the first page: this author knows exactly how to tease, tempt, and tantalize her readers with her powerful words. Yes, her stories are unconventional, to say the least, but that is part of the reason why I love them so much.

Nila Weaver is the young, successful, and sheltered woman who on the night of a major breakthrough as a professional designer is introduced to Jethro Hawk. Unbeknownst to her, his family holds incredibly power over hers and she finds herself gravitating towards him despite his peculiar behavior.

“I often felt like a kitten brought up by two tigers. Never permitted my own claws to form or teeth to sharpen.” (Nila)

Because of her overprotective father and brother, she is rather naive, but that is only in the beginning of the story. She soon learns that she has to become stronger, more resilient, if she is to continue to live, and survive, under the ever watchful eyes of the hawk.

I really love how Nila evolves from a shy, insecure woman to a feisty, strong minded cat with claws. She is forced to make the best of the situations she finds herself in, and I admire her strength and tenacity. But my heart also bled for her from time to time…To find out that your life is forfeited before it has ever really begun must be devastating, and I really hope that Nila’s fate will change as the story progresses in the (hopefully) near future.

“My life was never mine. My destiny was already written. My story began the night he came for me.” (Nila)

As for Jethro Hawk…To say that I found him to be very mysterious and intimidating would be an understatement! He is a bit of a conundrum, actually, and even though I cannot say that I will ever envision Jethro as a hero – trust me, this man is far from one! – I admit that I, so far, feel very intrigued by him.

“Men like me morphed into predators in sheep’s clothing. We preyed on the weak with no apology, and everything landed in our fucking laps.” (Jethro)

As the story progressed, I caught myself becoming more and more interested in the man hiding his true nature from the public eye behind the facade of his lineage, and the debt that follows every firstborn son that is born is such an interesting and different plot. I honestly cannot wait to uncover all that is Jethro Hawk in the future.

“You live in a fairytale, princess, and I’m about to destroy it.” (Jethro)

With all books written by Miss Winters so far, you will have to prepare yourself to be slightly disturbed by some of the things she forces her characters to go through. I always sit back and wonder how she comes up with her stories, and I must confess that the twists and turns of this first installment in the Inherited Series has left me quite speechless.

Both Nila and Jethro are bound by a kind of curse, in my opinion, and even though they should not be feeling other than like a prey and hunter, forced to be on opposite sides, they cannot deny the strange, but very alluring, sexual attraction that burns brightly every once in a while when they are together. And how is that even possible? I have no answer for you…and that is why I am so fascinated with this book!

You may ask why I feel compelled to give this book 5 stars, and the answer is really quite simple: it is because of the author’s writing abilities! I keep telling you how enthralling and captivating her books are, and how her words know how to weave a magical tale shrouded in heartbreak, devastation, and mystery – and even light banter and joy. Her female characters are vulnerable, but are forced to find an inner strength they do not even know they possess until fate makes them go through some horrific events, and even though this particular male character has yet to show any redeeming, and humane, traits, I am more than positive that Miss Winters has a plan, and that she will, eventually, let us see some different sides to Jethro that we do not expect him to own.

Who knows what will happen? Not me, that is for certain. I am actually not a great fan of serials, for various reasons, but I must confess that this one already has me hooked, and I cannot wait for the next book. I will try to be patient, however difficult it might be for me, and I heartily recommend this book to all the fans of dark romance novels out there. I am absolutely certain that you will become equally invested in the fate of Nila and Jethro just like I have become.

ONE – Nina’s POV

Huge disappointment, Ms. Weaver.” His cold glare sent a snowstorm wiping away the bonfire in my belly. “I’m done playing games, so cut the bullshit. Time to begin the day.” His voice gave no room for interpretation. A cold draft shot down my back.

My brief reprieve from debts and horrible Hawks was over. I’d been shown something I desperately wanted, but denied it because I failed to please him.

“You could teach me…show me how…” I couldn’t make eye contact with him. Mortification painted my cheeks for both admitting I was clueless and asking a monster to coach me.

Jethro laughed. “You think that will save you from what’s coming? Was that your little plan? To make me fuck you in the hopes I might feel something for you?”

**

TWO – Jethro’s POV

I stood up slowly, clicking my tongue. “Ah, ah, ah, Ms. Weaver. Don’t take that tone with me. You’re the failure. You’re the prisoner. You take what I give you. You do not assume to have any say or authority. That includes listening to everything I deem important to tell you.” Ghosting to a stop in front of her, I murmured, “Is that quite understood?”

I flexed my muscles, welcoming back the soothing chillness of control. I hadn’t liked stepping outside my confines of civility. Things got messy when silence was disrupted. Things got rushed when tempers rose and curses flowed.

And I didn’t want to rush her undoing. I wanted to savour it. Devour it.

My Review

Complimentary copy given by the author in exchange for an honest review

They say that opposites attract…but do they really? Well, apart from the initial physical attraction when you meet a person, I honestly believe that finding – and keeping – your soul mate has little to do with the physical attributes you possess. To me, what is on the inside truly determines if you have found that special someone who completes your life. But somehow, some way, we often have to search long and hard before we actually get it. And that is why I love Miss Weis’ books: her characters may be closer to forty or fifty instead of thirty, but they are always searching for fulfillment in life. The stories this author bring to life are genuine and honest, and I just love that she has this gift of bringing her readers hope with her words: she is telling us that it is never too late to reach for your dreams, no matter your circumstances, and it is the same with her latest work, “The Bondage Club”.

Meet Hunter Donovan: he is a bachelor who gave up on his dream of writing the great American novel when he was younger, and he now runs the family business, “Donovan Books”. And even though you would think that he is more than satisfied with his life, it is not the case. His older brother, Chris, and his father are both contributing factors to why he is less than happy with his life, but he is rather unsure about how to change his ways. However, bringing the business into the 21st century may be the right answer: he recognizes how the erotica genre has become more and more popular in the last few years, and that this is what his company needs in order to remain successful.

But how can he make this happen without bringing his father’s wrath and his brother’s disdain upon him? Enter Cary Anderson, a very successful freelance editor who knows just what to do in order to help Hunter reaching his goal. Being the womanizer that he is, Hunter knows how to turn on the charm to get what he wants, but he is very surprised when Cary does not simply fall in line. It seems that this woman knows her own mind and she is definitely not afraid to voice her opinions. So: imagine Hunter’s surprise when he realizes that he is becoming more and more attracted to her even though she is not his usual type – what is he to do? And how will he react when he learns about the secrets Cary hold?

There are many things I love about this story, but I actually want to address the title first: “The Bondage Club” is absolutely brilliant! Because even though you might think that you know exactly what this romance is about – because of its name – you will be wrong. Because this book is so much more than what meets the eye. Obviously, I do not want to give away the plot, and you may call me a tease for stating the above, but I just feel that it will be a great disservice to you if I reveal too much. And the last thing I want is to ruin your reading pleasure.

I really like Hunter: he is in a rut, plain and simple, and the fact that he slowly reveals more and more of himself and opens up his mind to new possibilities – both professionally and personally – makes me believe that you will fall for him as well. I admire his tenacity, and even his use of sarcasm is rather endearing. I admit that I found him to be a bit of a challenge sometimes – well, he is, after all, a man – but once I uncovered more and more about his background, I could understand him so much better. And once he learns to accept the fact that his old dream could become a reality, he grows so much. Yes, I like Hunter very much indeed.

“That was the problem with desire; if you didn’t pursue it, you ached, and if you did indulge, you eventually spent the rest of your life wondering when everything had gone so horribly wrong.”

As for Cary: oh, she could make me laugh! Initially, I thought that she was so confident, but once the mask she wears around other people started to slip, I saw a woman so like myself (or who I used to be, anyway). I found myself able to fully connect with her because some of her actions are born out of a need to please others – read: men – instead of having the courage to just be who she truly is. Her insecurities made me want to reach inside my Kindle so that I could give her a hug or offer words of comfort even though I knew that this was not possible. But what I love most about her is the fact it is not only Hunter who needs to do a lot of soul searching: no, Cary has to take a good look at herself and her life and find the strength to become the person she wants to be; through Hunter, she learns that pleasing others all the time is not healthy – no, she has to put herself first. And that is a scary thing to do. But she also has to learn that she may be an expert in erotica based on a theoretic point of view – but she definitely has a lot to learn about the male mind, and Hunter is just the man to show her how it works.

“Love can be a kind of bondage,” she explained. “We can get tied to someone just as easily as we can get tied up by someone. The book is about bondage in all its forms.”

As always, I am drawn into the world this author creates with her words. Miss Weis knows how to make me laugh, swoon, and even fume with anger because of some of the actions, or reactions, her characters make. But like I stated above, I love how she incorporates hope and encouragement even when the timing seems awful. Whenever I have read her books, I find myself sitting back and wonder about my own life, actually, and if there are any changes I need to make, because her words are just…powerful and strong. That is how I feel, anyway.

The setting of “The Bondage Club” was particularly interesting to me because it deals so much with the publishing business – one I have always been very fascinated with – and I truly think that Miss Weis manages to paint a very realistic and vivid picture of how the industry works. Furthermore, a book that is written entirely from the male point of view is always very fascinating to me, so that is also why I love this book.

I cannot say that much more without giving the entire plot away, so I will simply stop here and say: if you love romance novels, surprises, and a sassy heroine who knows how to make a male bewildered, tripping over his feet, you will love this book! There is great banter between Hunter and Cary, the pace of the story is perfect, and even though it deals with some serious life choices, I honestly think you will find yourself able to really connect with these characters. Because some way, somehow, this story will make you stop and think long and hard about your own life and the choices you have made in the past. That is how it has been for me, anyway, and I love how it leaves me with a sense of hope and courage to fulfill my own dreams. Thank you, Miss Weis!

My Review

Complimentary copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Do you all know how some books make you want to read them again as soon as you have finished reading them for the first time? That is how I always feel when I read a book by Miss Hoover – I believe I read “Slammed” three times when it was first released back in 2012 – and it is no different with “Ugly Love”. Since turning the final page three days ago, I have been nursing a massive book hangover – and, yes, I want to read the book again already! But I must confess that I find it quite a challenge putting my thoughts down, because I know – just know – that I will not be able to fully express my love for Tate and Miles’ story. It is just one of those times when I believe that my words will be inadequate; on one hand, I want to tell everyone all the details about the story – because I love it – but on the other hand, I will never forgive myself for revealing everything to you. Naturally, I refuse to do the latter – but that leaves me almost lost for words…I will do my best, though, to try to describe all the feelings I went through while reading this book. I went into this book without having read more than the synopsis on the back of the book. It is true: I did not want to read any reviews – spoiler free or not – because I wanted to be surprised. And, oh yes, my wish was granted: I was in for many surprises along the way.

Tate Collins meets Miles Archer in a rather unconventional way: passed out drunk in front of the door to the apartment she is about to share with her brother, Corbin, for a couple of months while finishing her masters in nursing. To say that these two get off on the wrong foot would be an understatement, and the last thing Tate needs in her life right now is a crush on her brother’s friend.

“He wants me for sex. I kind of miss sex. It’s been a while. I know I’m definitely attracted to him and can’t think of anyone else in my life I’d rather have casual, meaningless sex with than my airline pilot, laundry-folding neighbour.”

Despite the fact that Miles is taciturn, never divulging anything about him, and is downright rude, Tate finds herself becoming very attracted to him. And the strangest thing is that Miles is attracted to her…Then a bargain is made between them, one that seems simple and straight. But what happens when Tate finds herself wanting to break the two simple rules that Miles has set up?

‘“Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly. “And never expect a future.”’

Well, the answer lies in the book, naturally.

Tate is a very strong character, in my opinion. I like how she always has a quick comeback when either Miles or Corbin says something she disagrees with. She is also a rather temperamental and emotional person, but I think that is why I connected so strongly with her. As she starts developing deeper feelings towards Miles, my heart was bleeding for her, because I was so afraid that she would snap at some point, and that the outcome would not be pretty – and I was right. It was ugly, gut-wrenching, yet believable.

As for Miles…He is such a conundrum, plain and simple! Yes, you get his point of view in the book, but not in the way you expect it. (And that is one of the surprises I cannot divulge…) Miles is such a deeply broken man, but he was not always like this, of course. Due to some very traumatic events, he has chosen to close himself completely off from life. He is not exactly living…simply existing. As I got to know Miles – past and present – I found myself almost biting my nails because of the suspense, and I could not see how he would ever become able to fully breathe again. Allowing himself to become involved with Tate, however, slowly makes him realize that he has to start living his life to the fullest instead of living in the past. Did I want to throttle him sometimes? Oh, absolutely! He made me very frustrated, but once I learned the truth, I understood him so much better and was able to forgive him.

“She’s absolutely beautiful. Her hope is beautiful. The smile on her face is beautiful. The tears streaming down her cheeks are beautiful. Her love is beautiful.”

If you, like me, are a fan of Miss Hoover’s work, I am sure that you will want to buy “Ugly Love” simply because of that. And, as I stated above, you are in for many surprises in this latest work of hers. But I cannot say that I am surprised about the fact that I found myself crying – a lot – while reading the book, because that is what always happens when I read one of this author’s stories: they pull at all your heartstrings, making you fall in love with her characters, and making you completely engaged in their story. And even though I personally always truly hope and pray for a happy-ever-after, I always wonder: “Will there really be one this time?” Miss Hoover’s HEAs are somehow always bittersweet, but I find myself thinking that that is part of why I love them so much: her characters and the circumstances they find themselves in are always real, and honest. Life is messy, and the heartache and sadness many of us go through at some point in our lives make us come out stronger. And that, in my opinion, is the same for Miss Hoover’s characters.

“The difference between the ugly side and the beautiful side of love is that the beautiful side is much lighter. It makes you feel like you’re floating. It lifts you up. Carries you. The beautiful parts of love hold you above the rest of the world. They hold you so high above all the bad stuff, and you just look down on everything else and think, Wow. I’m glad I’m up here.”

“Ugly Love” is, without a doubt, one of the best books I have ever read. It is also very sexy and steamy, something completely new from Miss Hoover, but she manages it quite well *wink* Tate and Miles are such opposites, but they complement each other in the best way possible at the same time. As ever, Miss Hoover’s writing is poignant and flawless, and she provides us with some great secondary characters that only enhance your reading experience without ever taking the focus away from the main story.

Yes, love can be ugly, horrible, painful…but it can also be beautiful, uplifting, and hopeful. The twists and turns of the book will make you gasp, you will swoon over Miles (even when you do not really want to), and Tate’s sassy demeanor will make you laugh. There will be times when you are scared of reading the next chapter, but will it be worth it? Absolutely! In short: if I could give the book more than five stars, I would: it deserves at least ten! So thank you, Miss Hoover, for a wonderful reading experience. “Ugly Love” now sits among your other work on My Favorite Books shelf, and I am already looking forward to reading it again.
