CHAPTER ONE

She walks into Yogurtland with her cell phone pressed to her ear and a scowl on her face. Behind the scowl, her vulnerability shines like a fucking nuclear explosion in a dark closet. Whoever she’s talking to has stripped her bare. I find myself wishing it were me who affected her that way.

She’s digging inside her purse while balancing the phone between her shoulder and her ear; probably searching for money to get her frozen yogurt fix. What is it about frozen yogurt that makes us feel better? Maybe it reminds us of being kids, and how something as simple as a trip to the yogurt shop could turn a bad day into a great one. Whatever it is, I can see that she desperately needs some frozen yogurt. But with each passing moment that she’s unable to locate her money, I see the hope draining from her face.

“I told you to stop calling me. I don’t care if your car is in the shop. I’m not picking you up!”

She drops her purse and cell phone onto the checkered tile floor and curses loudly. “What the fuck are you staring at?!” she barks at the man who’s ogling her ass while ushering his small child out of the shop. “You’ve never seen a girl in a skirt bend over?”

She falls to her knees as she reaches for the cell phone first. She presses it to her ear and says hello a few times before she realizes there’s no one there. I walk over to her, coolly taking my time, then I kneel next to her and reach for the lipstick tube that rolled behind her left foot. I hold it out in front of her. She looks sideways at me and her mouth drops as she’s stunned into silence. Most girls are stunned when they see me. I’m used to that. But Senia has seen me plenty of times. She’s not amazed by my good looks. She’s stupefied by my impeccable timing.

Her gaze immediately falls to my lips, which are just inches from her own. Then she begins to sob as she throws her arms around my neck.

I can’t help but chuckle. “Hey, it’s okay,” I whisper into her ear as I breathe in her scent. She smells like strawberries or pineapple. Something fruity. It’s intoxicating.

I reach up and grab her face to pull her away, so I can look her in the eye. “What flavor do you want?”

A tear rolls down her face and I wipe it away as she stares at me, still dumbfounded. “Cheesecake, with strawberries.”

“Perfect.”

I help her gather the rest of her belongings into her purse then I order her yogurt as she watches me from where she stands next to the trash bin. She watches me as I approach her with her bowl of frozen yogurt, one of her perfect eyebrows cocked skeptically.

“Don’t look at me like that,” I say as I pass her the bowl of yogurt.

“Why?” she says as she pops the first spoon of creamy yogurt into her mouth.

She licks the spoon clean and I find myself wondering what it would feel like to have those full, red lips wrapped around my cock. I lean in and whisper in her ear, “Because you’re turning me on and I can’t fuck you in Yogurtland.”

She continues to cock her eyebrow as she takes another spoonful of yogurt into her mouth. “Then maybe we should get the fuck out of Yogurtland.”

*****

In the three years I’ve known Senia, we’ve almost fucked three times. The first time happened the day I met her, after a show we played in Durham. We were interrupted backstage by Xander, the band’s manager, just as Senia was about to get on her knees. The second time was at a Memorial Day picnic. We were both pretty shitfaced and she ended up tossing her cookies all over me as I was sliding her panties off. The third time happened less than three months ago, in a pub restroom stall. She started crying and couldn’t go through with it; she was too heartbroken over her ex. I think the fourth time may be the charm for us. For some reason, this makes me really fucking nervous.

I’m not afraid I won’t be able to satisfy her. There’s no doubt I’ll make her come harder than she’s ever come before. But for the first time in my life, I’m afraid of what will come after the sex.

Senia is Claire’s best friend. Even if Claire and Chris never get back together, I know she’ll always be around. Chris is my best friend. I can’t avoid Claire and, therefore, I can’t avoid Senia. Something about this terrifies me and intrigues me; like I’m flirting with danger or, more accurately, fucking with danger.

I grab the door handle on the passenger side of my silver Audi and pause as I look her in the eye and pull the door open. “Get in.”

She smiles and shakes her head as she slinks into the passenger seat. “Please don’t bother using your manners.”

“I won’t.”

I slam the door shut and walk around to the driver’s side, tapping the trunk as I note my surroundings. It’s eight in the evening. There are only three other cars in the parking lot and at least one of those belongs to the guy working behind the counter in Yogurtland. I look up at the lamppost in front of the car illuminating the hood and shining through the windshield.

I open the door and slide into the driver’s seat. Gazing into her eyes, for a moment I’m reminded of the last time my mom took me to get ice cream, when I was nine years old. I clench my jaw against the visceral nature of this memory and Senia takes this as an invitation.

She climbs into my lap and takes my face in her hands as she crushes her lips to mine. I thread my fingers into her hair and roughly grab a fistful of her dark locks. She whimpers as I thrust my tongue into her mouth and squeeze my fist around her hair, intermittently tightening my grip then easing up. Finally, I pull her head back by her hair and her eyes widen with shock and excitement. That’s when I notice her styrofoam bowl of yogurt upended between us, the cold stickiness seeping through both of our shirts.

She smiles as she swipes her finger through the cool, sticky substance and slowly eases her finger in her mouth. “Creamy,” she purrs.

“Fuck,” I whisper as my dick jumps, trying to escape my jeans.

I grab the bowl and toss it into the backseat and she smiles as I swipe my finger through the yogurt and reach under her skirt. Her thighs are smooth and warm against the back of my fingers as I move straight for her panties. She holds my gaze as I slip my fingers under the fabric and find her clit. She swallows hard as her smile melts into a look of pure ecstasy.

“Oh, my God,” she breathes as I stroke her gently.

I grab the back of her neck and pull her mouth against mine, swallowing her moans as if they were the air keeping me alive. I shove two fingers inside her and she gasps as I curve my fingers to reach her spot. Her body curls into me as I lick the soft skin below her earlobe. Abruptly, I remove my hand from her panties. Her face is incredulous as I lift her up by her waist and place her on the passenger seat.

“Get in the back.”

For a moment, it seems as if she’s questioning this abrupt request. “This better be good,” she says as she slithers between the two front seats to get into the backseat.

I reach under her skirt as she crawls into the back and I yank down on her panties. “Jesus Christ, Tristan!”

“Make up your mind,” I say as I place my hand on her ass and push her into the backseat. “Am I Jesus Christ or Tristan?”

She laughs as I scramble into the backseat after her, holding onto her panties so she’s forced to leave them behind. I quickly position myself between her legs as she lies on her back and smiles. “You can be whoever the fuck you want.”

I slide my arm under her waist and lift her up so I can place her back against the passenger side window. Pushing her skirt up, I spread her legs wide open and marvel at the sight of her. She perfectly shaved with a small landing strip of dark hair that ends at the top of her slit.

“I prefer Tristan,” I say as I flash her my crowd smile.

She whimpers like a kitten in pain, her hips writhing against me as I devour her slowly and methodically. She tastes like the frozen yogurt I smeared all over her.

“Oh, Tristan,” she moans and I hook my arms tightly around her thighs to steady her as her legs begins to tremble. “Oh, my fucking God!”

I suck gently as her clit pulsates against my tongue. She lets out a loud cry that sounds like a sigh mixed with a scream. I can’t help but smile as I continue to stimulate her until she grabs chunks of my hair and yanks me up.

“Holy shit,” she breathes as she wraps her arms around my neck and pulls me on top of her.

But she doesn’t kiss me. She just holds me there and I quickly begin to feel uncomfortable with this closeness. I begin to push away, but she tightens her grip.

“Please don’t move,” she begs, and I can hear something strange in her voice—she’s crying.

I lie still with her for a while until I no longer hear her sniffling. I slowly pull my head back to look her in the face and she quickly wipes at the moisture on her cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers.

I grab her hand and pull it away from her face. “It’s okay,” I murmur as I brush my thumb over her cheekbone.

“No, it’s not,” she says, a hard edge to her voice as her hands reach down to undo the button and zipper on my jeans. “But it will be.”

She pushes my boxers down until my dick springs free and I suck in a sharp breath as it comes in contact with her.

“I don’t have a condom.”

My shoulder-length hair hangs around my face as I hover over her. She reaches up and pushes my hair back as she pulls my mouth to hers. I groan as I try to resist making such a stupid mistake. Despite the rumors, I don’t have unprotected sex. I may be a whore like my mother, but I’m not as reckless as she is.

I try to pull my face back, but Senia holds my head still. Suddenly, I’m royally pissed off. I rip my head out of her grasp and glare at her.

“This is just a fuck. Nothing more,” I insist and her eyebrows scrunch together. A sharp pang of regret twists inside my chest. “I’m sorry.”

Why the fuck am I apologizing?

“Then shut up and fuck me,” she says as she tightens her legs around my hips and the tip of my cock presses against her opening.

I slide in slowly, watching as she closes her eyes and tilts her head back. Leaning forward, I suck on her throat as I gradually ease myself further inside her with each stroke.

“You’re tight as fuck,” I whisper as I carefully work my way deeper inside.

She doesn’t respond, so I keep thrusting, slowly at first then working my way up to a steady pace. I pull my head back to see her face and her eyes are still closed. I don’t know why, but I want to see her eyes.

“Look at me,” I command, and she opens her eyes instantly, her gaze finding mine.

Her eyes are slightly red and that’s when I notice the tear tracks running from the corners of her eyes, down her temple, and disappearing into her dark hair. A strange urge overcomes me and I lean down and kiss her temple. Licking my lips, the saltiness of her tears turn me on even more. I ease my hand behind her knee and lift her leg higher so I can thrust deeper.

She whimpers as she threads her fingers through my hair and pulls my mouth to hers. I kiss her slowly, matching the rhythm of my hips to the movement of our tongues. She bites my top lip and I feel myself getting so close to blowing my load.

“Holy shit,” I whisper as I try to pull my head back, but she holds my head still and kisses me deeply as I let go inside her.

My dick twitches as I fill her with my gushing warmth. I grunt into her mouth and she continues to kiss me, swallowing my cries the way I did hers. Finally, I tilt my head back and look her in the eye. Then I ask her a question I haven’t asked anyone since I broke up with Ashley four years ago.

“Who was that on the phone?”

Now I REALLY want to read the book!

“Eraser” by Megan Keith

Eraser

Blurb:

A man with no name.

Mysterious.

Dangerous.

Brooding.

Sexy.

Once a week he frequents the bar where Mackenzie works.  He orders the same drink, scotch on the rocks, and he sits back on the same lounge chair, quietly watching… waiting…

He has money – that much is obvious.  He wears his tailored suits well.  He smells divine, of expensive cologne, and orders his scotch from the top shelf.

He drinks alone, but he never leaves that way.  With a snap of his fingers, a flick of his eyes, a glimmer of a smile, he gets the attention of the most attractive women in the bar.

This time his focus is on Mackenzie.  Instead of feeling nervous Mackenzie is enthralled, intrigued… and aroused.

NOTE:  Not for the weak, feint-hearted or for people with sticks up their ass (unless you like that sort of thing sexually that is).

MATURE 18+ READERS ONLY!  Contains explicit sex scenes and a BDSM type scenario.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review

This review will not be as long as my others because this is a novella and I am afraid of revealing too much of the story.

I usually have a hard time with novellas, meaning finding them interesting because I always want to know more! I am seldom satisfied which is why I normally steer clear of them. Having said that, it is healthy to step out of one’s comfort zone sometimes and try something new or different. That is the reason I started reading “Eraser” – and I am SO glad I did!

As the blurb says, our heroine, Mackenzie, works at a very high-end establishment and every Friday, the same male customer comes in, orders the same VERY expensive Scothch and observes the female patrons. What fascinates Mackenzie so is the fact that he always leaves with a different woman on his arm, and she longs to be one of them.

When he this particular Friday singles hers out, she cannot help but notice how he seems to treat her differently: for one thing, he orders her 3 of the same very special and expensive Scotch, but what is more important is the way he looks at her and the way he speaks.

“There was something different about the way he was looking at her tonight. She didn’t believe he had ever taken so much notice of her at any time prior. It intrigued her. HE intrigued her. He always had.”

She is drawn to him and, against all common sense, agrees to go “home” with him even though he does not do repeats, as he calls it. Also, she is only allowed to call him “Sir”. Strange indeed…

What follows is an extremely erotic night filled with passion. And that is all I will say about what happens in the novella, you have to read it yourself. 😉

Now, I really did enjoy the story and I think it has been a very long time since I read a novella where I did not get disappointed about it. I like the set-up, the main protagonist, Mackenzie, and I REALLY like the mysterious elements – I do not think I have read a story before where I did not know the hero’s name.  Or maybe I should not call him a “hero”…This male is a dominant with a capital “D” and true, there were some parts of him that I did not approve of but that is just my personal opinion. I was almost shouting “YES” when I got to the ending and got to read Sir’s own thoughts and feelings – I love different POV’s in a book but more now than ever: after all, he IS such a mystery. So I am very happy with the fact that the author decided to give us that. J

“When she had slept he didn’t want to let her go. But she had needed some space and time, even if she didn’t know it.”

The reason I am not giving the book 5 stars, though, is the fact that I still want to know more…I know, I know, it IS a novella! But I just cannot help myself. 😉 Also, although we get Sir’s thoughts in the end, thus getting the chance to know him better, there are still a few points that I need clarified – I was left with one too many questions unanswered. But please bear in mind that this is my personal opinion.

Overall, I absolutely loved the novella and I am very glad that I took a chance and read it. The author has opened my eyes to the fact that although a story is short, it can be just as satisfying as a full-length novel. So thank you for that, Miss Keith!

I hope you enjoy reading this excerpt – it has certainly made me want to read the book even more!

Later that morning after their workout and shower, Jake fell asleep on the couch. Feeling at a loss with nothing but time on his hands, Ryan wandered down the hall towards Fin’s room. She was sitting at a little study nook in the corner, laptop open with one foot resting on her chair. She was wearing a tank top and a little pair of shorts. Leaning up against the doorframe, he couldn’t tear his eyes away from those long, delectable legs.

As though sensing his presence, she turned in her chair. He forced his eyes upwards, catching a sexy flush fill her cheeks at his blatant perusal.

“Morning, Ryan.” She took off her black framed reading glasses and tossed them on the desk.

“Morning, Fin,” he replied.

Against his better judgement, Ryan pushed away from the door and walked farther into the room. Fin hadn’t changed at all and neither had his desire for her. His heart kicked over when she met his eyes. He knew everything he was feeling right now was written all over him, but he couldn’t seem to shut it off.

Her eyelids fluttered closed and she whispered, “Why now?”

Ryan took a deep breath. “I don’t know,” he replied honestly.

He shouldn’t still be feeling this way after so many years. Why was he doing this to her, and to himself? It was better for everyone if he stayed away like he was supposed to.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come. I’ll go stay at the barracks.” He turned to leave.

“Ryan!” she called out. Scrambling out of the chair, she grabbed his arm as he was halfway out the door.

“Fin,” he warned, looking down at her hand pointedly.

She took a step closer and he breathed her in, her scent like jasmine on a hot summer’s day. He was surprised when he looked into her eyes and saw anger burning hotly in their depths.

“Six years, Ryan. Do you know how hurt I was, each day passing by and getting nothing—not even a note or an email? I didn’t just lose you. I lost my brother too. Both of you left me, and I was okay with that. I understood that this was what you needed to do, so I moved on. I built a life that doesn’t include you. That was what I had to do.” She paused and raised a shaky hand to cup his cheek. “I’d have given you my entire heart if you’d only asked, but it’s not yours now. It’s not yours.”

Ryan closed his eyes, agony for losing what was never his rose in his chest until he felt strangled by it. He placed his hand over hers, holding it there until she tugged it away.

“You’re right,” Fin told him. “You should stay on the barracks … but I don’t want you to. Damn you, Ryan,” she whispered fiercely. “I don’t want you to.”

Ryan used his bulk to crowd her against the wall until there was no room for her to move. Leaning one hand against the wall, he grabbed her hip with the other. Her breathing rose rapidly and he leaned in, ducking his head until their mouths hovered a mere breath apart.

“Why can’t I force myself to leave?” He rested his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. “I hurt too. For six years I fought every day not to think of you, and I lost, because every day you were all I could see. You were the best thing in my life—so sweet and innocent, and so goddamn tempting.” His hand strayed from her hip and slid down to grip her ass. He swallowed the groan. “I stayed away so you could move on.”

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

There is a reason why this book’s ranking in the Erotica genre on Amazon is so high, because let me start by telling you that it is SERIOUSLY hot! Phew! Readers who enjoy reading erotica will definitely not be disappointed. 😉

The book tells the story about Sophia and Kayden who meet online, and they are both in their mid-thirties. Sophia is in a relationship but is, in fact, quite bored with the guy and prefers staying at home with her ereader, getting lost in romance novels, instead of being with him. She longs for the kind of relationship she, so far, has only read about. She is shy, sweet, but strong.

Sophia and Kayden’s online exchanges and texting starts off innocently enough, but it does not take long before deeper feelings start developing between them. It does, however, take a long time before they meet because Sophia does not exactly trust Kayden and his sentiments about her:

“I still thought the man whore title fit him perfectly, but he was more complex. He’s passionate and romantic, but his heart’s been destroyed and I needed to know why.”

Kayden is very up-front with Sophia in the beginning: because of past relationships that ended very badly, he does not date anymore. He only does the friends-with-benefits thing. But he cannot help but falling for Sophia eventually – he has issues, though which we get to hear about later in the book.

“I knew I was dangerous to Sophia, unlike any man she had been with, but I wanted her. I wanted to draw her in as deep as I could.”

Now, as always, I do not want to go into too many details about what happens in the story – this time, it is because I had some issues with it, and it is not fair to cloud your judgment. What does not work for me might work for you.

Let me start with the things I DID enjoy:

First of all, I liked the storyline about a couple in their mid-thirties meeting online after both having scarred pasts when it comes to relationships. This point felt very believable to me, and I found it very refreshing to read such a story as well. Also, the way both Sophia and Kayden struggle with his drinking problem really got to me and I feel that the author made this part of the story very honest.

Secondly, I enjoyed the pace of the book – I liked that it takes quite some time before Sophia and Kayden actually meet in person. If they had met after a few weeks, say, I would have been very sceptical and actually a bit disappointed. I am glad the author chose to do this instead of many others.

Thirdly, for the first half of the book, I really liked Kayden. He is portrayed as an honest, playful, alpha male who is not afraid to go after what he wants. And what he wants is Sophia. I liked that he does not rush her in any way when it comes to their sexual relationship, but he is not afraid to push her just the tiniest bit in order to make her loosen up and embrace her sexuality. All women need such a man in their life, in my opinion.

Lastly, but not least, the sexual tension between this couple and their extreme chemistry is off the charts HOT! As I stated earlier in my review, I do not think that you will be disappointed if you enjoy reading erotica. 😉 Take this scene, for example:

“I looked through the car windows on all sides and didn’t see anyone. He rammed his cock inside of me and all thought vanished. I no longer worried about the people on the street. We didn’t make love – we had feverish sex in the backseat of my car. The only sound was our skin slapping against each other, our lips and tongues moving together, and our breath fast and harsh.”

Need I say more? 😉

I know this review has been a whole lot about the male character – sorry about that. I very much liked Sophia: she goes from being incredibly shy and rather insecure to this out-going and sexy woman who does everything in her power to support her man in every possible way. Her whole character spoke to me and I found her incredibly real. I think the author did a great job when it comes to making Sophia come alive for me. Well done!

Now, next to the few things that did not work for me:

I felt that Kayden made a complete shift personality-wise that I did not understand completely. I mean, he went from this very apha male to a very insecure one, and I do not think that was so realistic when it comes down to it. Also, I did not find his handling his crazy ex-girlfriend to be that believable – I mean, being the way he is, I would think he would have talked to the probation officer sooner. But I cannot relate to this part of his life – because it is so far from my world – so maybe his hesitation is understandable to other readers. I have taken that into consideration which is the cause of the high ranking of my review.

Overall, I enjoyed getting to know Sophia and Kayden. I liked that this is not a typical fairytale but that they have to overcome a lot of obstacles in order to find their happiness. That is how it is in real life, is it not? As I mentioned earlier, I also find it very refreshing that the story deals with a couple that is more mature than most of the couples I read about in books.

My final note: Miss Bliss, this is a really great debut and I am so looking forward to reading your next book! 🙂

And now for my interview!

Q: For the readers who have yet to read the book and who do not know you: can you tell them a little about yourself?

A: I have been a teacher for over ten years. I’m just a normal person with a day job and wrote Untangle Me because I felt that I had a story to tell. I want to bring happiness to my readers and leave them satisfied at the end of the journey.

I’m pretty boring. I love to talk with people who love to read on Facebook, I am hooked on couponing, and sleep way too little for any human beings.

Q: Where did the inspiration for “Untangle Me” come from? When did the idea of the story come to you?

A: I pulled some bits from the lives of friends and people I know, but it really just evolved in my mind over time. I thought it was a storyline that wasn’t explored and needed to be. I like to write about real life people, someone we can all relate to.

Q: How long did it take you to write the book?

A: I started writing the book in May and finally hit publish at the end of September.  It went through a couple revisions and developed over time. I started writing the main storyline on my phone and slowly filled in the details and added to the storyline as I wrote. It was a process and I learned so much by writing Untangle Me.

Q: Is Sophia a lot like you? Or do you have another person from real life in mind?

A: Sophia is a lot like me. I won’t go into which parts, but I definitely have the nerdy girl down pat.

Q: This may seem like an odd question, but…Is there any of Kayden’s characteristics in you? Or is he entirely fictional?

A: Nothing in Kayden’s character is me.

Q: Did you know how the story would end from the beginning? Or did the book almost take on a life of its own?

A:  I didn’t know how the story would end when I started. It changed over time. I almost had it be a cliffhanger, but I thought that would be cruel. I added the Epilogue only days before publishing.

Q: As an adult, have you always read romance/erotica?

A: I haven’t always been an avid erotica reader, but started years ago. I’m always looking for something different. The stories sometimes sound the same to me and my mind craves some new. It’s a constant quest to find the next great book.

Q: Did certain scenes make you blush while writing them? 😉

A: No, the only thing or person in the world that can make blush is my boyfriend. 😉

Q: I like the fact that we get to see how much Kayden – and Sophia – struggle with his drinking problems – did you know from the beginning that that would be a part of his character?

A: Yes, I think it’s a real world problem. Many people struggle with this issue or other addictions with loved ones. I wanted readers to be able to relate. When I read about extremely wealthy people, although I enjoy it, I can’t relate to their lives and ability to spend freely.

Q: Do you have any rituals when you sit down to write? For instance, do you listen to music while writing?

A: I usually write on my couch with Facebook open, I have the television on for noise, and have my coffee on hand. I write whenever I find time, before work, after work, anytime. When I first started writing I did it on my phone during my lunch break.

Q: Speaking of music, do you use it to get you in the right frame of mind while writing a certain scene?

A: Sometimes I do, depends on the mood. If I’m having trouble getting into a scene then I turn to music for inspiration.

Q: I am very much looking forward to reading your next book which will be about Kayden’s past – can you give the readers a few pointers as to what his story is? (Without giving any spoilers, of course. :-))

A: Kayden’s story will be a Novella and hopefully will be out before the end of the year. Kayden’s past is filled with women, booze, and drugs. It will be steamy, sexy, and filled with decisions that led him off course. It’s a wild path that led him to Sophia and made her his savior and love of his life. I am also working on another full length story about Suzy, Sophia’s room mate from book one. Kayden and Sophia will play a role in the story too and readers will hear about their life after Untangle Me.

Thank you so much for giving this interview, Chelle! 🙂

“Tattered Love” (Needle’s Kiss #1) by Lola Stark

Tattered Love

Blurb:

When ex-Special Ops bad-ass Mace walks into Needle’s Kiss tattoo parlour, he never expected to find the girl who would turn his life upside down.

Hard as nails Scarlett has been unlucky in love: she’s been burnt, chewed up and spat out. Reluctant to have another relationship, can she keep her wits about her when hot-as-sin Mace walks into her tattoo parlor? Or will he break her down and leave his mark within her ink?

What starts out as a little fun, turns into something so much more.

Can Scarlett look beyond Mace’s devastating past or will his demons come back to haunt them both?

Content warning: contains steamy, anywhere-goes sex, an alcohol induced embarrassing night out and two headstrong lovers taken on a whirlwind of crazy

My Review

It seems that I am on a roll these days, meaning that I keep reading great books from authors down under! 😉 “Tattered Love” is, without a doubt, a scorching hot, funny, sweet page turner and I defy anyone who thinks differently. (Just kidding, we are all different…)

Meet Scarlett, our sassy, sexy, sweet-talking (not ;-)) heroine: this is a woman alone – but not lonely – who is determined in succeeding and who has found her place in the world with her very own tattoo parlour, “Needle’s Kiss”.  This place is her home away from home and she is damn proud of it (as she should be).

“It was good to be here. It was my haven. My happy place. It was home.”

Even though you cannot see it on the outside, Scarlett have, well, scars. She suffers from her past which have made her very tough and completely closed off when it comes to relationships. She is very upfront about this, however, and she enjoys her life of “love ‘em & leave ‘em”. Deep down she longs for a man who will love her unconditionally, tattoos included, but she is scared of opening up her heart to someone new. As she likes to say:

“Keep your head, heels and standards high.”

Enter Mace, the brother of Scarlett’s employee, Tripp…Sigh…I mean, any woman will start drooling when Mace is introduced:

“His broad, muscular frame, that looked as solid and toned as a brick wall, filled the room. Beautiful aqua-blue eyes, in stark contrast to his slightly olive skin, gave a hint at what had to be a Hispanic background.”

Well, Scarlett is close to drooling when they meet for the first time. She is not one to back down for some harmless flirting and some hot-as-sin sex but she does not count on Mace having a different type of relationship in mind: he actually wants to date her, and she feels somewhat apprehensive about that.

It takes some time but finally, Mace breaks down the walls around her heart and Scarlett starts envisioning a future with him. But then, as is the order of things, Mace has to make some rather dumbass mistake, meaning: he tries to do the right thing in his mind which is completely wrong, of course.

What can I tell you about Mace? He is completely alpha, but very sweet and just as vulnerable emotionally like Scarlett. He, too, suffers from a very painful past, and I almost cried when reading about his pain. It felt so real and I wanted to reach down and give him a hug – if he were not a fictional character, that is. 😉 Honestly, the author conveyed his tragic past and subsequent heartache perfectly.

“The last few years had been a series of hard lessons learned. I was nearing thirty years old. Just three years earlier, I’d had darn near everything a man could have wanted. Unfortunately, I had soon realized, good and well, that nothing was ever guaranteed, everything you held close could be taken in one soul-crushing swoop, leaving you destroyed and feeling hopeless.”

I have highlighted so many scenes of the book that it is scary…I could go on and on, give you quote after quote, but I do not want to give too much away. There are plenty of fun moments in the book as well, and I cannot resist giving you this:

“What the hell is wrong with that man? I felt my eyebrows draw together as I unwrapped the paper. He’d lost his shit. It was official. Mace was crazy. Trip was now rolling around on the ground holding his stomach. Remy had tears rolling down his face, and there I sat, holding a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cut into the shape of a love heart.”

And that is it, ladies, no more for you! Suffice it to say, I do not believe you will be disappointed while reading this book. I have to say this, however: although I love the book, there are a couple of things that fail to make it a 5 stars read for me. Without giving you any spoilers, I will just say that I felt that there were a couple of scenes that were not elaborated upon, where – in my opinion – the author should have done so in order for it to be a perfect story for me. Remember: this is MY review, MY viewpoints only! You may feel completely different than me.

Now, I hope I have made you curious enough to pick up a copy of this book, because I sincerely recommend that you do! Not only are the main characters portrayed very well, we get to know the secondary characters without them becoming the focus of the book. I especially liked the way the author describes Scarlett’s relationship with her best friend, Teeny:

“You would never guess from the way we talk to each other just what she meant to me. Teeny had always been there – at my worst, at my best. She was always in the wings, silently watching my back. She knew I could take care of myself.”

Last, but not least: I would classify this book as more than romance, for me it is erotica. And I believe you will agree with me when you have read a couple of the sex scenes: O…M…G! Mace likes to talk dirty…That is all I will say on that matter. 😉

I cannot wait for book two, “Conflicted Love”, to come out! Miss Stark, please hear my prayer: make it soon! I want to get to know Teeny and Trip better. 🙂

Cover Reveal, Synopsis & Book Trailer: “Welcome To Sugartown” by Carmen Jenner

Hello, my lovelies!

This book is absolutely FABULOUS and I cannot wait to give you my review when it releases next week. The book DID have an amazing cover before, but the author decided to change it. I still love the old one – which she knows – but the new one is, actually, better and speaks more to the reader about what the book is about.

Carmen Jenner

Welcome to Sugartown Cover

Release Date: November 3, 2013

Publisher: Independent

Genre: Contemporary New Adult

Blurb:

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more– no really, Ana bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear. Secrets that won’t just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk, too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton womanizing cousin, the ex from hell and more pies than you could poke a … err … stick … at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

Welcome to Sugartown.

Hi, ladies!

I have another very special treat for you today – the first book in the Mending Hearts Series, “Running On Empty”, is one of my favourite books and I am so happy to be a part of this release day launch. I will also be a part of the blog tour that is running from 24th October to 7th November.

Although this book is part of a series, each one can be read as a standalone novel.

Tatum O’Connell:

Some call me a party girl. People see me as happy, full of life, with absolutely no cares in the world. They see what I want them to see. But no one knows me – really knows me. Not even Noah Reese.  Mr. Perfect is always watching me, most likely judging every single imperfect thing I do. But, if Noah wants to keep an eye on me, that’s just fine. I definitely don’t mind. I just hope he doesn’t have any plans to save me from my new-found life of self-destruction because in order to save me, he will have to see me…

And I’m never going to let that happen.

Noah Reese:

Perfect. That’s me. That’s the only acceptable way to be, according to my father. Perfect grades. Perfect manners. Perfect athlete. Perfect SAT scores. Perfect college. And recently, I was accepted into the perfect med school. My future has already been mapped out for me and there’s nothing that can change that. Not even Tatum O’Connell. That girl is out of control, yet for some reason, I can’t seem to keep my distance from her. I watch her closely, hoping that one day she’ll let me in, but watching her lead her life down the dangerous path she’s on right now isn’t easy…

I have a feeling I’m about to find myself swept away by the hurricane that is Tatum O’Connell.

“Two fleeting souls,

Unknowingly tethered.

Too slowly drawn,

Impatient fate calls.

The jolting collide intertwines their lives

And splinters their walls.”

“Catalyst” – Noah Reese

Excerpt from “Running In Place”.

Enjoy!

“You’re a worthless excuse for a daughter. I wish I never had you.”

Frantically, my eyes dart around the room for her. She’s here. I know it. I can smell the stench of alcohol in the air.  Whipping around, I search for any trace of her, my entire body shaking and the knot in my throat unbearable. Tears fill my eyes as they anxiously race around the kitchen, finally landing on the cabinet where she used to store her liquor.

Memories flood my mind, the immobilizing terror that I would feel every time she approached it.  The prayers I would send to no one in particular, just hoping that she wouldn’t open that fucking cabinet for just one night.  Prayers that fell on deaf ears.

Slowly I make my way to the white doors, crouching down in front of them.

“You killed him and I will make damn sure you spend the rest of your life paying for that. I’ll never again know true happiness because you fucking exist.”

Shaking my head to try to clear her voice from my mind, I set my trembling fingers on the silver knobs and yank the doors open. Nothing.

A sigh of relief escapes my lips as I close them.  Rising, I turn to take a step towards the sink when another memory strikes.

“Mama, don’t please.” I cry out loud as she approaches me with the scissors.

“I have to, Tatum.  Your beauty does not match the vile, revolting child that you really are on the inside. Everyone should see you for who you are.”  I try to run, but she grabs my long dark hair as I pass by her, swiping the blades so close to my neck that I can feel the cool metal against my skin. Laughing she chunks my tresses into the sink.  “You’re an ugly person, Tatum. Inside…and out, now.”

“God, Daddy.  Please help me,” I say out loud, lifting my shaking hands to my forehead, threading sections of hair through my fingers.  “Please, Daddy, I need you.” After a while, calmness spreads throughout my body.  I’m no longer shaking, but the voices are still there.

Turning the faucet on, I splash water on my face repeatedly, trying to drown out them out along with the memories.  After wiping my face dry with a dishtowel, I hear the crackling of gravel as Noah’s Jeep pulls up into the driveway.

Breathing in deeply, I try to regain my composure as I walk to the door, straightening my shirt and running my fingers through my hair before I reach for the knob.  Hearing steps in front of the house, I barely crack the door and poke my head out to make sure it’s really him.  With all the crazy shit going on in this house I can’t be too sure.  But, much to my relief, there he is, standing on my porch in his classic white t-shirt, work jeans and boots, his fist raised about to knock.

And just like that, the voices are gone and my head is clear.

I release a comforted breath and feel the corners of my mouth slightly lift at the sight of him.

“What are you smiling at?” Noah asks, seemingly nervous.  Opening the door wider, I gesture for him to enter my house of horrors. The sight of his disheveled hair makes me grin even more.

“Your hair, it’s nice to see it like that.  I don’t know why, but it makes me smile.” I clear my throat.  His nerves must be contagious, because suddenly I feel that hummingbird feeling in my chest.

With him now inside, I close the door and head towards the kitchen, checking over my shoulder to make sure he’s following me.  “Want something to eat?”

Once I see he’s fallen into step, I turn back around and round the corner, making sure to avoid looking at the sink. The memory still lingering on the hinges of my mind, I try to push it as far away as I can. “I don’t have much, but I did manage to make it to the store over the weekend.”

“No, I’m good, Thanks, though.” He shoves his hands in his pockets and rocks onto the balls of his feet.

Thinking about our last night together, I feel the frustration mounting within myself. I should kick my own ass for kissing him.  Everything seems so edgy between us now and I hate it.  Running my fingers through my hair, I twist it at the nape of my neck and bring it over my shoulder.

“Well, what’s up?  What couldn’t wait until tonight?”

His eyes widen. “Tonight?  What’s tonight?”

“I picked up Sadie’s shift.”

He grinds his teeth together as he leans against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest.  “I told you to take the entire week off, Tate. You don’t need to work right now. You need to concentrate on healing.”

I know.

“No, I don’t.  I’m sick and tired of being cooped up in this depressing house.  I need to get out, to stay busy.  I feel like I’m losing it, honestly.”  My hands are still trembling and I’m not sure if it’s the sudden anxiety from being around Noah or the fact that I’m losing my mind. His eyes break from mine and land on them as they continue to shake like a leaf.  Pressing himself off the wall, he takes a small, timid step towards me.

I want to tell him to stop.  To stay where he is.  To tell him to leave this house and forget about me.  That I could ruin his perfect life by just being near him.

But I don’t.

I let him continue taking those steps until he’s right in front of me and even breathe out a sigh of contentment when he wraps his arms around me, pulling me into his frame. The tears fall as he lightly traces my back with his fingers, and with each touch, my uneasiness lessens.  I know it’s selfish, but I would give anything to stay in this moment forever.

Circling my arms around his waist, I press my forehead against his chest and watch the droplets as they plummet from my face towards his boots, dark spots forming as they strike.  After a couple of seconds, I replace my forehead with my chin, daring to look into his muddy brown eyes, full of their usual intensity as he studies me, peering into my soul.  In them, I find complete solace and protection, and the sudden desire to share things with him that I swore I’d never share with another living person.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Noah. I feel like I’m going fucking crazy. Ever since Friday, I can’t stop them.  The voices.  My mother’s leading their charge to my insanity.”   My throat closes almost completely shut.  “I hate this house. I hate being here, alone.  So many memories…” I trail off, my strength fading, no longer able to keep from bawling.

I close my eyes as the warm moisture cascades down my cheeks and runs down my neck.  Unwrapping his arms, he moves his hands to my face, wiping the tears away, but it’s useless.   They’re replaced instantly.

“Tate, open your eyes.  Look at me, baby.”  I keep them closed, not ready to face the wary expression in front of me.

“Let me in, Tate. Open your eyes.”  The heartache in his tone and the tremble of his voice prompts me to open them immediately.  As soon as our eyes catch, a breath hitches in my throat.  His eyes shining, he gently wraps his fingers around my shoulders, pressing his thumbs softly into my flesh as he speaks.

“You’re not alone.  I’m right here.” A slight smile of relief breaks through the tears on my face.

I watch his mouth tip up in response.  “Now, tell the voices to shut the fuck up because it’s my turn.”
