Thank you so much for letting me interview you, Nina!
Thanks for having me, Karen!
For the readers who have yet to read the book and who do not know anything about you: can you tell them a little about yourself?
I am a thirty something dreamer…okay, closer to forty! I’ve always had a dream of writing my own book but it’s taken me awhile to finally get around to publishing. I’ve tried many things in life but I have to say that I think I’ve finally found my thing! I love everything about self publishing a book, from the writing of it, to the marketing of it and I absolutely love chatting with readers (not only about my book but also about other books we share a love of!). Aside from writing, I am an avid reader! I adore books with alpha males in them and these days I pretty much only read indie books. I actually can’t remember the last time I picked up a traditionally published book. When I am not reading or writing, I love to play with paper, paint and ink. Art journalling is one of my loves although sadly I haven’t had a lot of time for it this year. I am a mum to a teenage daughter and we live in QLD, Australia.
Where did the inspiration for “Storm” come from? When did the idea of the story come to you?
I started working on Storm at the beginning of this year. Madison’s character came to me first. I wanted to explore a character struggling with an addiction and issues from her past that she hadn’t resolved yet. Learning to lean on those you love was an underlying theme I wanted to include, as was accepting the unconditional love that others offer us. Originally this story wasn’t going to be set within an MC. Her family was the MC and they were sending J to look out for her but I had her pegged to end up with a different character and J was just going to be an ex lover that was a side character. However, J turned up and stole the damn book!
How long did it take you to write the book?
On and off, most of the year, however I made the decision to publish just over two months ago and then worked constantly on it from then.
Are any of your characters based on people from real life? Or are they entirely fictional?
They are all fictional but I would say that aspects of some of their personalities are taken from people I know. Serena’s fierce loyalty to Madison is based on my best friend. However, my BFF informed me that Serena sucked as a best friend because there is no way that she would have let Madison go so long without telling her what happened to her years ago. I guess that aspect of Serena is actually me – I don’t push people to tell me stuff they aren’t ready to share. There is a side character who isn’t in the book very much who is based on a friend of mine. Rowan, the man who would do sweet things for you like bring you medicine when you are sick – that’s my friend. I intend to give Rowan his own book at some point.
Who did you connect the most with, Madison or J?
Mmm, Madison has a lot of anger inside of her. That’s not me. I am the kind of person to live and let live, and forgive very easily. That is not Madison. I tried to tone her anger down but it just came out of her. I connect more with J. I would give something or someone up that I loved if it meant they would be safe or better off.
Did you know how the story would end from the beginning? Or did the book almost take on a life of its own?
A little bit of both. Blade was a surprise, but a nice one 😉
Did certain scenes make you blush while writing them? 😉
That question there makes me smile! The first sex scene between Madison and J was the first sex scene I had ever written. It made me blush. After that, there was no blushing at all. Those scenes are actually my favourite to write… looking forward to Scott’s book. NO wait… I am actually really looking forward to Nash’s book 😉
I like the fact that we get to see how much Madison and J struggle with her drinking problems – did you know from the beginning that that would be a part of Madison’s character?
Yes. I wanted her to grow into a stronger person and learn to look to someone else for support in that journey. J is the absolute best person for that job – he would do anything to help Madison but the one thing he won’t do is let her make excuses for her choices.
Do you have any rituals when you sit down to write?
The best time for me to write is first thing in the morning. And while I love music and use it to inspire my writing, I am more productive if I just sit down and write without turning on music or the internet or anything. A coffee helps too. 🙂
Do you use music to get you in the right frame of mind while writing a certain scene?
Sometimes I do. Taylor Swift’s song Red played a big part in this book, as did Katy Perry’s song Unconditionally. I find playing The Killers is good too… not sure why, but it helps sometimes.
I am very much looking forward to reading your next book about the Storm MC – can you tell us whose story you’ll be focusing on?
The next book will be about Scott. He’s going to be a tough one to crack because he is closed off to relationships. He’s just not interested at all. I can’t wait for you to meet the amazing woman who will turn his world completely upside down.
Name 3-5 Fun Facts about yourself!
1) I love country music! And Keith Urban tops my list of favourite singers. I find his story very inspiring – he followed his dream and spent years working on it. Even when they told him he wouldn’t make it, he kept on believing and working.
2) I don’t watch movies over and over, and I pretty much never read a book twice. My daughter did remind me tonight though that I have watched the movie Crazy Stupid Love over and over. Did I mention that I have an unhealthy obsession with Ryan Gosling?? I would watch ANY movie that he and Emma Stone did together. And why didn’t they get together in real life???!
3) I am too trusting. And I fall for hard luck stories too easily. Not sure if that is a fun fact though, so moving on…
4) Christian Grey & Travis Maddox completely changed my world. Yep. No… get your mind out of the gutter, girl!! If I had never read the 50 Shades books and then Beautiful Disaster I may not have discovered indie authors and that the ability to self publish books existed.
Enjoy the excerpt, ladies!
I grabbed my purse and headed outside to go and buy lunch. J was on the phone, but saw me come outside and signalled for me to wait.
“I’m going to buy lunch, J. And I only get an hour so I don’t have time to wait for you,” I said, tersely. He kept talking and scowled at me. I turned and started to walk away from him, towards the cafe where I always bought lunch.
I could hear him muttering something into the phone and then he must have ended his call because he went silent. Then, he barked, “Madison!”
The last thing I wanted to do was stop for him, but there was something in his tone; a ‘don’t fuck with me’ command. So I stopped, and turned around to look at him. Oh, my. He was shitty.
He stalked to where I was and got in my face. “Why the fuck do you have to be so difficult about this?” He was fuming.
Well, I could see him, and raise him in his anger. “Maybe it has something to do with the way Scott has gone about this. And the fact that he sent you!”
He flinched. It was only for a second, and most people wouldn’t have even noticed it. But I knew J, and I saw it. It surprised the fuck out of me. “Well then, it looks like we’ve got some shit to sort out, babe, because I’m not going anywhere.”
“I don’t want to sort shit out with you. That ship sailed two fucking years ago, J,” I spat.
He gripped my arm, pulling me closer, “No, it fucking didn’t,” he growled, eyes blazing, “And you can’t deny there’s still something here. I feel it and I know you feel it too.”
I laughed. No, actually, I cackled. “You wanna fuck, J? I can feel that, and, yeah, if you wanna go there, I’m all for it. But don’t mistake my desire for your cock for anything else.”
