Life can be a bitch but love can get you through any storm.

Madison Cole’s family is the Storm Motorcycle Club. Her father is the President and her brother is the VP. She grew up surrounded by bikers, crime and violence. Two years ago she walked away from her family and the world they live in. Her soul was shattered, her heart was broken and she had an addiction she couldn’t shake. She picked up the pieces and put herself back together. Now her family wants her back. The club is being threatened and they send a club member to return her home to safety; the one person that could destroy everything she has worked so hard to build.

Jason Reilly has sacrificed a lot for the motorcycle club he calls family. Two years ago he made the biggest sacrifice of all; he gave up the woman he loved for them. Now he is being sent to bring her back and he is conflicted. He thought he was over her but discovers their connection is as strong as ever. Their love was all-consuming, passionate and fiery. It was also their undoing and he doesn’t know if either of them is strong enough to battle the demons that ripped them apart, to find love again.

Madison and Jason are brought back together by a force out of their control; one that pushes them to a breaking point. Can they overcome their past and discover a love worth fighting for or will the harsh reality of their world finally and completely break them both?

My Review
ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review
If you enjoy books about bikers and their women, I am confident that you will like this book. It has a sassy, smart-mouthed heroine and a hot-as-sin biker who is not afraid to speak his mind. And yes, ladies, there is plenty of STEAMY scenes as well. 😉
The story centres around Madison who has grown up with a MC president as her father but she left that life behind two years before. She is a recovering alcoholic, has plenty of issues – mainly anger and guilt – but she will not really address them – she prefers to keep her feelings bottled up, not getting close to another man because of her past boyfriend, Jason (J). Instead, she hooks up with random men, only focusing on the sex, and tries to just live her life from day to day, not thinking much about the future. She keeps dodging phone calls from her brother, Scott, because she does not want to have anything to do with the Storm MC anymore. Eventually, though, she cannot ignore them anymore, and once she learns what he has to say, she is far from reassured: a former boyfriend of hers, Nix, is out to get her. And let me tell you, ladies, he is definitely NOT a guy you want to mess with.
In order to protect Madison, Scott wants to send one of the guys from the club – and then enters J…Oh-oh.
“At that exact moment, I glimpesed him entering the restaurant: the guy Scott had sent. And I couldn’t believe my fucking eyes. Over six feet of pure muscle, tanned and inked skin, dark hari, and piercing blue eyes; he was as gorgeous today as the last time I saw him.” … “He looked as pissed as I was. Yeah, I bet he didn’t want this gig and I could picture the battle he probably had with Scott about it.” (Madison)
Well, to say that Madison is less than pleased to see J again would be an understatement. Having her heart broken by this man has scarred her and she never wants to feel that way again. J tries to convince Madison that she will be safer if she agrees to go back home with him, but she refuses vehemently. In the end, though, she relents because she comes to realise that she needs to deal with her past, once and for all. And that also means dealing with J.
And what a man J is…He is very alpha, very sexy and very determined to have Madison again. Once J finally gets Madison to listen to his reasons of why he let her go, she has to admit that it was the right decision, and they pick up their relationship again.
I really love J character, and I think the author is very good at showing us what it means being a part of a MC Club through him. It means family, loyalty, protection. But it also means secrecy, and Madison will have to acknowledge the fact that there are times J cannot – or will not – divulge club business. In other Words, Madison will learn to have to trust J. And this is the crux of the matter: trust, and how she did not really trust him in the past.
“Do you think that I like that part of me? That I enjoy doing the dirty work that being in the club requires? I fucking don’t. But I do it for a reason. And six years ago, when I fell in love with you, my reason became you.” (J)
Now, lots of drama happen in the book, but I do not want to spoil anything for you. Besides, then it would just be another synopsis of the book, and that is not the intent of a review. 😉  But let me tell you this: I like the fact that the main protagonists are in their late twenties/early thirties – they are mature, adult people who have learned from past mistakes and both are willing to work very hard on their relationship and do better the second time around. The author’s writing style is practically flawless – it is very well written and very engaging. I was definitely invested in the story from page one and I had a hard time letting it go. I do, however, wish that certain scenes were not just described – I would have liked some more dialogues – but that is just personal preference.
Overall, I think this is a great debut from Miss Levine. There is plenty of romance, drama and angst. The plot line is solid, and the secondary characters are all very important but never lets you wondering more about them instead of the main characters. I am so looking forward to reading the next book in the Storm MC Series.

Here is my interview with Nina, ladies!

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for letting me interview you, Nina!

Thanks for having me, Karen!

For the readers who have yet to read the book and who do not know anything about you: can you tell them a little about yourself?

I am a thirty something dreamer…okay, closer to forty!  I’ve always had a dream of writing my own book but it’s taken me awhile to finally get around to publishing.  I’ve tried many things in life but I have to say that I think I’ve finally found my thing!  I love everything about self publishing a book, from the writing of it, to the marketing of it and I absolutely love chatting with readers (not only about my book but also about other books we share a love of!).  Aside from writing, I am an avid reader!  I adore books with alpha males in them and these days I pretty much only read indie books.  I actually can’t remember the last time I picked up a traditionally published book.  When I am not reading or writing, I love to play with paper, paint and ink.  Art journalling is one of my loves although sadly I haven’t had a lot of time for it this year.  I am a mum to a teenage daughter and we live in QLD, Australia.

Where did the inspiration for “Storm” come from? When did the idea of the story come to you?

I started working on Storm at the beginning of this year.  Madison’s character came to me first.  I wanted to explore a character struggling with an addiction and issues from her past that she hadn’t resolved yet.  Learning to lean on those you love was an underlying theme I wanted to include, as was accepting the unconditional love that others offer us.  Originally this story wasn’t going to be set within an MC.  Her family was the MC and they were sending J to look out for her but I had her pegged to end up with a different character and J was just going to be an ex lover that was a side character.  However, J turned up and stole the damn book!

How long did it take you to write the book?

On and off, most of the year, however I made the decision to publish just over two months ago and then worked constantly on it from then.

Are any of your characters based on people from real life? Or are they entirely fictional?

They are all fictional but I would say that aspects of some of their personalities are taken from people I know.  Serena’s fierce loyalty to Madison is based on my best friend.  However, my BFF informed me that Serena sucked as a best friend because there is no way that she would have let Madison go so long without telling her what happened to her years ago.  I guess that aspect of Serena is actually me – I don’t push people to tell me stuff they aren’t ready to share.  There is a side character who isn’t in the book very much who is based on a friend of mine.  Rowan, the man who would do sweet things for you like bring you medicine when you are sick – that’s my friend.  I intend to give Rowan his own book at some point.

Who did you connect the most with, Madison or J?

Mmm, Madison has a lot of anger inside of her.  That’s not me.  I am the kind of person to live and let live, and forgive very easily.  That is not Madison.  I tried to tone her anger down but it just came out of her.  I connect more with J.  I would give something or someone up that I loved if it meant they would be safe or better off.

Did you know how the story would end from the beginning? Or did the book almost take on a life of its own?

A little bit of both.  Blade was a surprise, but a nice one 😉

Did certain scenes make you blush while writing them? 😉

That question there makes me smile!  The first sex scene between Madison and J was the first sex scene I had ever written.  It made me blush.  After that, there was no blushing at all.  Those scenes are actually my favourite to write… looking forward to Scott’s book.  NO wait… I am actually really looking forward to Nash’s book 😉

I like the fact that we get to see how much Madison and J struggle with her drinking problems – did you know from the beginning that that would be a part of Madison’s character?

Yes.  I wanted her to grow into a stronger person and learn to look to someone else for support in that journey.  J is the absolute best person for that job – he would do anything to help Madison but the one thing he won’t do is let her make excuses for her choices.

Do you have any rituals when you sit down to write?

The best time for me to write is first thing in the morning.  And while I love music and use it to inspire my writing, I am more productive if I just sit down and write without turning on music or the internet or anything.  A coffee helps too. 🙂

Do you use music to get you in the right frame of mind while writing a certain scene?

Sometimes I do.  Taylor Swift’s song Red played a big part in this book, as did Katy Perry’s song Unconditionally.  I find playing The Killers is good too… not sure why, but it helps sometimes.

I am very much looking forward to reading your next book about the Storm MC – can you tell us whose story you’ll be focusing on?

The next book will be about Scott.  He’s going to be a tough one to crack because he is closed off to relationships.  He’s just not interested at all.  I can’t wait for you to meet the amazing woman who will turn his world completely upside down.

Name 3-5 Fun Facts about yourself!

1) I love country music!  And Keith Urban tops my list of favourite singers.  I find his story very inspiring – he followed his dream and spent years working on it.  Even when they told him he wouldn’t make it, he kept on believing and working.

2) I don’t watch movies over and over, and I pretty much never read a book twice.  My daughter did remind me tonight though that I have watched the movie Crazy Stupid Love over and over.  Did I mention that I have an unhealthy obsession with Ryan Gosling??  I would watch ANY movie that he and Emma Stone did together.  And why didn’t they get together in real life???!

3) I am too trusting.  And I fall for hard luck stories too easily.  Not sure if that is a fun fact though, so moving on…

4) Christian Grey & Travis Maddox completely changed my world.  Yep.  No… get your mind out of the gutter, girl!!  If I had never read the 50 Shades books and then Beautiful Disaster I may not have discovered indie authors and that the ability to self publish books existed.

Enjoy the excerpt, ladies!

I grabbed my purse and headed outside to go and buy lunch.  J was on the phone, but saw me come outside and signalled for me to wait.

“I’m going to buy lunch, J.  And I only get an hour so I don’t have time to wait for you,” I said, tersely.  He kept talking and scowled at me.  I turned and started to walk away from him, towards the cafe where I always bought lunch.

I could hear him muttering something into the phone and then he must have ended his call because he went silent.  Then, he barked, “Madison!”

The last thing I wanted to do was stop for him, but there was something in his tone; a ‘don’t fuck with me’ command.  So I stopped, and turned around to look at him.  Oh, my.  He was shitty.

He stalked to where I was and got in my face.  “Why the fuck do you have to be so difficult about this?” He was fuming.

Well, I could see him, and raise him in his anger.  “Maybe it has something to do with the way Scott has gone about this.  And the fact that he sent you!”

He flinched.  It was only for a second, and most people wouldn’t have even noticed it.  But I knew J, and I saw it.  It surprised the fuck out of me.  “Well then, it looks like we’ve got some shit to sort out, babe, because I’m not going anywhere.”

“I don’t want to sort shit out with you.  That ship sailed two fucking years ago, J,” I spat.

He gripped my arm, pulling me closer, “No, it fucking didn’t,” he growled, eyes blazing, “And you can’t deny there’s still something here.  I feel it and I know you feel it too.”

I laughed.  No, actually, I cackled.  “You wanna fuck, J?  I can feel that, and, yeah, if you wanna go there, I’m all for it.  But don’t mistake my desire for your cock for anything else.”

My Review

This is so much more than a M/M romance. It is a story about acceptance from the people around you, about not hiding yourself and about how you can meet this special someone who will own your heart completely at a time you least expect it.
I suppose you CAN read this book as a standalone novel, but I really do not recommend it – I want you to read “Fading” first, because I feel you will be missing out on a lot otherwise. Jase’s story begins before Candace’s attack and ends less than a year later.

Meet Jase, Candace’s best friend: he is, by his own definition, a bit of a man-whore. He hooks up with lots of guys, never getting close to anyone, and even though he, in a way, has owned up to the fact that he is gay, he is so conflicted about it. And who would not feel that way, what with his upbringing being the way it was: he has very religious parents and was taught early on that being gay is a sin. We learn that he had a sister and that his parents completely shut down when her and her boyfriend were killed in a car accident when they were only 18 years old. I cannot imagine the horror of losing a child, but to forget your other child, removing yourself from him/her will be something I will NEVER be able to comprehend.

Jase was so scared of his feelings towards other guys when he was in high school that he slept with every girl who was willing. But he changed his pattern when he went to college. Now, you would think that this means that he has accepted his sexuality, but that is not true. The fact of the matter is that he will never be completely free before he comes out to his parents.

When Jase meets Mark, his world is tipped on its axis. Here is a man who is not afraid of being who he is, and who is very upfront about it. From the beginning, Mark tells Jase that he knows of his reputation and that he does not do casual sex. He would like to see where a real relationship with Jase will go, and Jase cannot help himself: he desperately wants to find the courage to free himself, to be able to be who he really is, and he is drawn to Mark in a way he has never been drawn to another man before. However, Jase really messes up his chance for something real in the beginning of their relationship because he cannot let go of his fears.

From page one, you will feel all Jase’s emotions: self-loathing, confusion and, finally, happiness. I absolutely adore Jase and the way this author portrays him; I really found the whole story believable – the way Jase struggles with his sexuality, the lack of parental support and the loss of his sister are all factors as to why he has chosen to not get close to others, except for Candace, that is.

“I can feel the thudding of his heart through his chest, and I know I am with exactly who I should be. No doubts. No questions. He’s freed me in a way I didn’t think possible. He’s it.” (Jase)

Mark is just…well, he has a beautiful soul, and he tries so hard do whatever he can to make Jase feel comfortable in their relationship. He is patient, kind and – equally important – an amazing support to Jase when Candace is attacked. Yes, he is more open about being gay than Jase is, but he admits to be struggling himself from time to time.

“I’ve been fighting. Fighting to be free. But now I realize, it isn’t about the fighting. It’s letting go of the fight to see that what I’ve been searching for is within him. Mark is my freeing.” (Jase)

Jase and Mark compliment each other and their journey together was beautiful to read. If you have yet to read a M/M romance, I will definitely recommend that you start with this one. In the past, I have been rather apprehensive about this genre, but not anymore. I think I have said something similar before, but I will say it again: reading is about broadening one’s horizon and although I am quite certain there are other genres I will never read, M/M romance is not one of them.

I know that this review is rather short but I am so afraid I will reveal too much if I write more. I will read anything Miss Blair writes in the future – as with “Fading”, her writing style in “Freeing” is so beautiful, so passionate and flawless. She has a way with words that hooks you in and you feel sad once you have reached the last page of the book. So, Miss Blair, thank you for telling us Jase’s story. You have a lifelong fan in this bookaholic!

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review

After just having read a rather dark romance, I wanted something lighter to read. I am happy to say that “True Bliss” was exactly what I needed. This is the second book in the Bliss Series with interconnected characters but can be read as a standalone novel. I would not recommend it, though, as I think you will miss out on too much if you do not read them in order.

Meet Kate: she is longing to find her Prince Charming. It has been drilled into her from when she was a child that she would meet her perfect man one day, but she is getting rather impatient waiting for him to show up even though she is only 24 years old.

“I don’t just want a good love, one of those everyday loves that you hear about. I want the kind of crazy love we’ve been warned about. The kind of love that makes your heart skip a beat. The kind of love that makes you want to dance in the rain and bottle up the sunset while screaming at the top of your lungs. The kind of love that authors write about, musicians sing about and lover’s dream about.” (Kate)

This is hardly an unreasonable request, which is why Kate decides to use an online dating service even though her friend, Mac, and her Superman (*wink*) Daniel does not approve. I like the fact that Kate is being smart about this venture: she does not simply meet the men as soon as they contact her; she tries to get to know them a bit better before jumping into a blind date. She has also come up with her “Three Dates Rule”, meaning no sex allowed until after the third date – very wise!

We get to experience a few of Kate’s “Disaster Dates”, as I like to call them, and they made me feel bad for her. You would think that in a city as big as Chicago, it should not be a problem finding your perfect match. Wrong! It takes a lot of hard work finding your Prince Charming.

Kate is a great character: she is feisty, charming and sweet. I really connected with her – maybe because of the online dating – and I loved getting to know her better. She has been burnt in the past but those experiences have not made her bitter, and I liked that she looks toward the future with an open mind.

Now, even though Kate is trying her luck with online dating, it is not as if she has not already met a guy who sets her body on fire: Zander, one of Mac’s former friends-with-benefits, has made her heart thump wildly once or twice. Sadly, though, he rejected her a few months before – and I would be just as mortified as Kate, mind you – when he had taken her home after she was almost molested by another guy. They shared a very passionate kiss and even though she desperately wanted him to sleep with her, he turned her down. Needless to say, she has avoided him ever since. But the fact that he turned her down is not her only reason for this: she has a really tough time considering him to be more than an acquaintance because of his history with Mac. There is, naturally, also his line of work to consider: he is a male stripper.

I was rather surprised by Zander, actually. Getting inside his head was a true pleasure for me: never had I expected him to be so caring and considerate. He is sexy, passionate and – yes – sweet. He has grown up being the man of the house since his father died and is thus very mature despite the fact that he is only 23 years old. He is a protector by heart which is why he wants to become a cop. The stripping is getting to him and he is actually rather tired of doing it.

“Let me tell you, you may think guys can be crude and vulgar, but holy heck, some of the things I’ve had yelled at me in the middle of a routine would make Hugh Hefner blush.” (Zander)

This is so hilarious! And so true – in my opinion, women can be just as bad as men and I love how Miss Harvey seems to think the same. But back to Zander:

Like Kate, he cannot stop thinking about the night he refused her, but I completely understand why he did it: he did not want a quick lay with Kate, because he thinks she is worth so much more.

“Kate. My fantasy girl personified. From her fiery red hair to her five foot nothing body with curves for miles. She’s a good girl; a take hime to mom kind of girl. Definetely not a one night stand type of girl who you’d subject to the walk of shame the next morning.” (Zander)

After having seen Kate on a date with a much older guy one evening, he drills Mac for details and finds out about the online dating. Zander then concocts a plan – and I was thinking “Oh no” at this part of the story – to get to know Kate better without her knowledge. He knows that Kate may have an issue with him being a part of Mac’s past which is one of the reasons why he will not show his true identity before she knows him better.

That is all you are getting from me about what happens in the book. As with the previous installment in this series, I absolutely LOVED “True Bliss”. It has everything I look for in a romance: drama, funny moments, passionate scenes, and the h/H that are wonderful to get to know. I was riveted to the pages and did not want the book to end! Miss Harvey’s writing style is so engaging, fun, and believable, which is very important to me in a romance. I really like that Mac and Daniel – the characters from the first book, “Temporary Bliss” – are a vital part in this second book, but they do not overshadow Kate and Zander’s love story. Mac is her usual crazy self again, making me laugh out loud, and Daniel is still the swoony Superman, making me sigh happily.

I honestly believe that you will fall in love with Kate and Zander – a.k.a. the God Of Gorgeousness as Kate calls him. And with lines like these, you will not be able to resist this new book boyfriend:

“I love you enough to fight for you until you tell me there is no hope, then I’ll fight harder. You are the only woman I want to be with, to laugh with, to live with, to make love to.” (Zander)

I really cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us in the next book in the series!

*Disclaimer – There is absolutely no cheating in this book. However, this book does contain descriptive and super hot sex scenes that will make you blush and leave you hot and bothered. Make sure you have you husband, partner, boyfriend or significant other nearby when reading, or else batteries. Lots and lots of batteries*

Makenna Lewis cringes at any mention of the word commitment. She doesn’t want or need a relationship, but she does like sex (who doesn’t).

That explains Noah, Sean, and Zander, her three ‘friends with benefits’.

They know the score, they know they’re not the only one, and each of them provide her with a different physical need that she craves and enjoys.

Until a late night encounter with the delicious Daniel Winters turns her preconceived notion of no-commitment completely on its head.

Soon she finds herself feeling things she vowed never to feel again, and when Daniel pushes for more than she’s willing to give, she falters.

What do you do when something that you’ve known to be so wrong in the past feels so damn right?

If you’re Mac, you run and hide.

But is Daniel the type of man who takes no for an answer?

And here is the teaser, ladies!

Unlocking the door and swinging it open, I realized I should have hoped a little harder. Talon stood there looking spunky in dark jeans, a black tee, and motorcycle boots. His hair looked wet from a recent shower, and I wondered if I could blow-dry it for him with my mouth. My traitorous heart leaped, my body tingled, and…what the frig? How’d my underwear get wet already? Wait, had I peed myself? I looked down at the floor. Nope, wasn’t wet.

That meant only one thing. “I need to get laid or break out my Gold Finger on maximum speed.”

Deanna burst out laughing, and Talon seemed smug. I looked at them both confused. Oh, hell no. I did not just say that aloud. See! Drinks, Talon, and me. It was a no-go!

Blog Tour: “Welcome To Sugartown” by Carmen Jenner – Synopsis, Excerpt & Giveaway

Hello, my sweets!

Those of you who have yet to read this book might be interested in reading my review – and then I hope you will want to read it.

Today, I am part of the blog tour of this amazing Aussie author – who I am so proud to call my friend – and you will get a wonderful excerpt from the book.

Enjoy

Title: Welcome to Sugartown

Author: Carmen Jenner

Genre: Contemporary New Adult

Release Date: November 3, 2013

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more– no really, Ana bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear. Secrets that won’t just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk, too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton womanizing cousin, the ex from hell and more pies than you could poke a … err … stick … at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

About Carmen

Carmen Jenner is a thirty-something author, doctor, pilot and CIA agent.

She’s also a compulsive, flagrant prevaricator who gets to make things up for a living.

While Sugartown may not technically exist, Carmen grew up in a small Australian town just like it, and just like her characters, she always longed for something more. They didn’t have an Elijah Cade, though. If they did, you can be sure she would have never left.

“Hey, where are you going?”

“I have to take a shower.”

“I thought we were going to talk about this?”

“No. You said we were going to talk, I don’t remember agreeing to anything.”

“Like you didn’t agree to coming just now?”

“Fuck you.”

“What the fuck, Ana? Why are you fighting this so god damned hard?” he shouts and I spin around, stung by the harshness in his voice. “I can see how much you want me. I can feel it. Fuck me! I can’t stand in the same room as you without feeling the longing seeping out of your pores, and you’re still refusing to acknowledge the fact that you’re still in love with me.” The surprise I feel at that last confession must be written all over my face because Elijah comes closer, until he’s staring right down into my eyes and says, “Yeah, you can drop the fucking act, baby girl. I know how you feel about me, the question is, why don’t you?”

“You need to stop pushing this. Stop pushing me!” I shout. “Yes, I still love you, but you tore my heart out, Elijah! You left me broken in a million fucking pieces! You don’t get to be the one to put me back together.”

I storm into the bathroom. Slamming the door behind me, I quickly undress and slip underneath the hot spray. I’m too numb to cry and, despite seeing myself shake like a leaf, I don’t feel a thing, not the sting and burn of the water against my flesh and not the fresh wound gaping in my chest.

I let it go too far. I let him in again, I think, as I lean my head against the tile. My chest hurts, my head hurts. I feel like I’m made up of millions of tiny exposed nerves, all trembling and clamouring at once with the aftershock of being prodded by sharp implements. I feel raw. There’s no other way to describe it. How many times can we do this to each other before we realise we’re completely broken with no chance of ever being put back together?

I don’t know how long I stand there, letting the water soak me to the bone, but sometime before it turns cold I hear the shower door open behind me. I whirl around and find Elijah there in the cubical with me, the spray soaking his clothes.

“Get out!”

“No.”

“Fine then, I’ll get out.”

“No. You won’t,” he says as he pushes me back against the tile. “You’re not making this decision for us.”

“Jesus Christ, Elijah, how many times do I have to push you away before you get a fucking clue? How many more times can you stomach hearing that I don’t want you, that there is no more us?”

“Bullshit! The only reason we aren’t together right now is because you’re too fucking stubborn to admit how you feel, because it might mean being hurt again. Well guess what, baby girl, life is all about hurt. From the day we’re born to the day we die, we fucking hurt and we cry and we pick ourselves up and, if we’re really lucky, we have people to help us pick up the fucking pieces.”

“You think I don’t know this shit? You’re not the only one who knows hurt, Elijah, so quit with your fucking world weary patronising.”

“You know hurt, huh? Then why the hell are you putting us through more of the shit?”

I shove him up against the glass and then clench my hands into fists to keep from scratching and clawing at him until there’s nothing left. “You did this to us! Not me. I’m just trying to deal the best way I can. I’m trying to save myself from you, because if I give you what’s left I’ll have nothing leftover to pick up when you leave again.”

Blog Tour: “The Thrill Of It” by Lauren Blakely – Synopsis, My Review & Giveaway

TTOI BT

Hello, my lovelies!

It has now become my turn on the blog tour of this truly amazing story.

At the end of this post, there is a tour wide giveaway.

Enjoy!

The Thrill of It Cover
Blurb

A new adult story of Love. Sex. Addiction. Blackmail. And Power…Some say love can be an addiction. Others say it’s the thing that makes life worth living. Let me tell you everything I know about love…Love isn’t patient, love isn’t kind. Love is a game, a chase. A thrill. Love is wild and war-like, and every man and woman must fight for themselves. At least that’s how it was for me. A high-priced virgin call girl by the time I started college, I was addicted to love and to sex. Even though I’ve never had either. I controlled love, played it, and held the world in the palm of my hands. Then I fell down from those highs, and I’m being blackmailed for all my mistakes, forced to keep secrets from everyone, except the only guy I don’t regret.

Trey…

With all the other women, I knew what they were. They were temporary. They were pills, they were bottles, they took away all the pain, and numbed the awful memories that wore down my ragged, wasted heart. Until I met Harley. She’s the only girl I ever missed when she walked away. But now she’s back in my life, every day, and there are no guarantees for us, especially since I don’t know how to tell her my secrets. What happened to my family. All I know is she’s the closest I’ve ever come to something real, and I want to feel every second of it.

How can you love with no regrets when regret is all you know?

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I am fast becoming a huge fan of Lauren Blakely’s even though this is only the second book of hers that I have read. She has a way of making you invested in her stories from page one and this book is no different. But, as I have said before, be warned: this is not like her other books so do not expect it to be.

How can you be a virgin call girl addicted to sex and love? To tell you the truth, I was a bit sceptical about this and I am sure I am not the only one. But then, the more I got to know Harley, the heroine, my scepticism dwindled until it became nonexistent.

Harley is definitely a product of her upbringing: her father left when she was very little and after her mother, Barbara, got back on her feet, she molded Harley into becoming her friend, not her daughter. It was really heartbreaking reading the passages about Harley’s mother and some violent feelings arose in me every time she did or said something that no daughter needs to know about her mother. I found it particularly difficult getting to know how she had no qualms about Harley hearing about her sexcapades. And it really makes you wonder how such a smart woman – an award-winning journalist, nonetheless – cannot see how toxic an environment this is for one’s child.  It brought me close to being sick to my stomach, actually, and it definitely made me understand Harley’s actions so much better.

“I am cracked and brittle too, hardened by all the things I saw, and mostly all the things I heard over the years.” (Harley)

Harley met her former pimp, Cam, through her mother, actually. Now, here is a character that is peculiar, to say the least. The first word that comes to mind is “sleazy”. Then, as you read the book, the second word is “interesting”. And finally, you end up thinking “likeable”, which is very strange, I know. But that is how I felt while reading Harley’s story. When she describes how she was allowed to make up her own set of rules, and that Cam had no problems with that, it is no wonder why Harley stayed in that life for years.

The only reason Harley is no longer a call girl is the fact that she is being blackmailed – how I hated that woman, Miranda! She is forcing Harley to write a book about her “exploits” – called “Memoirs Of Teenage Sex Addict” – and makes her go to SLAA (“Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous”) in order to change her ways. This is actually a blessing in disguise because that is where she connects with a young man, Trey, which she has met once before and cannot stop thinking about. He makes her feel things she has never felt before, but because of her past, she is afraid to trust them.

Trey is, like Harley, a product of his upbringing, but instead of too much openness, his home was cloaked in silence. I dare you to NOT feel anything while getting to know what Trey hides in his soul – his story made me cry, it was so heartbreaking. He is also going to the meetings in the SLAA, but for an entirely different reason: his problems stem from mindless sex with older women. He has never had a girlfriend, never even had sex with a girl his own age.

What more can I tell you about Harley and Trey without giving the story away? I will not go into further details about what takes place, because you really need to read the book and make up your own mind about it. But what I CAN tell you is that this book is about how two damaged souls can find each other in a time of pure darkness, and how they finally let go of their pasts and search for a better future together. And the way Trey sees Harley will definitely make you swoon:

“You belong to a stained glass window in an abandoned building. You belong to the flower in the junkyard. You belong to the beach that you want to see. Most of all, you belong to the ugly beautiful. You belong to this nessy, crazy, brave and honest love.” (Trey)

To sum up: like I wrote in the beginning of my review, this is not like Miss Blakely’s other books. For me, there are no laugh-out-loud moments, but it WILL make you sigh and smile. I have already told you that it made me cry, and I also felt lots of anger while reading. Further, it is an intense romance that definitely deals with some difficult subject matters. Finally, it is such a beautiful love story that does not end with this book – and yes, there is kind of a cliffhanger in the end, but nothing you will not be able to handle.

Thank you, Miss Blakely, for finally giving us Harley and Trey’s love story. I know that you started writing it a long time ago and I am so pleased that you did not keep it under lock and key. I, for one, am thrilled that this book is not the end of this couple’s journey. And I wholeheartedly believe in this:

“Now I know. I get it. I understand. This is love. It’s not a game. It’s not a razor’s edge. It’s not a transaction. The poets are right. The dreamers are right. The lovers are right. This isn’t nothing. This is everything.” (Harley)

Random Musings Of A Bookaholic, part 3

Hello, everyone.

I know it has been a while since I made a similar post. Initially, I thought I would write such a post twice a month – however, I have to admit that I do not have the time to do that, so I am cutting it down to once a month instead. Besides, I am not that interesting. 😉

Today, I thought I would tell you a but more about myself and I will also give you my current TBR list. I do have a few ARCs to read as well so I think it is safe to say that my list will not differ much over the next few months. You never know with me, though…

So, onwards to giving you a little more insight as to who this Danish Bookaholic is.

1) I am not a journalist or a professional writer of any kind. My day job is in the shipping & freighting business. Rather shocking, is it not? To tell you the truth, I never thought that that would be my line of work…Sometimes, I still wonder if I made the right choice, career-wise, but isn’t that always the way? Anyway, I enjoy it very much because I get to talk with a great many different people every day + I LOVE being a problem-solver!

2) Before I met my hubby, I did not, under any circumstance, want children. I was 100% positive that I did not carry the “Mum Gene”, and I did not even like children that much. I know, I know, it sounds pretty stupid. I am still the kind of person who needs my “alone time” and luckily, I am blessed to have an amazing husband who understands and respects that about me and gives me that. ❤️

3) I absolutely HATE it when people are late and do not call me to say they will not be able to meet me at the appointed time. EXCEPT when my closest and dearest friend does it. (You know who you are. 😉) I have known this woman since 5th grade so I am used to the fact that she is often 5-10 mins late.

4) I have an illness: it is called OWPD – “Obsessed-With-Paperbacks-Disorder”. LOL! Okay, one should never joke about these things but it is true. I think the hubby was under the impression that I would buy less paperbacks when I got my Kindle – but he was so wrong! Whenever I have read a book I love, I have to own the printed version, too…Sorry, hubby! 😉

5) I will rather spend money on books than clothes. Please do not get me wrong: I love shopping! I love new clothes, to dress up and make myself look great. I especially love beautiful lingerie. BUT: if given the choice, I would rather spend my last dollar on books…A true bookaholic, eh?

So, there you have it: 5 random things about me. I hope I have not bored you to death! 😉

And now for my current TBR list…As always, ARCs are not included. I hope you will get inspired! ❤️

Wicked_Beat.JPG LouderThanLove TryCoverJustHuman StillHuman New Playing With Her Heart cover StubbornLove ALittleTooFar Consequences Truth Convicted Stripped.JPG

As with my previous similar posts, click on the title of the book and you will be directed to Amazon Kindle Store.

“Wicked Beat” by Olivia Cunning – I know, I know…Eric Sticks is actually my favourite of the Sinners boys, so I really need to read his story.

“Louder Than Love” by Jessica Topper – Sigh. I really want to read this so I best get on with it.

“Try” by Ella Frank – My second M/M read and all the bloggers I know are raving about this book!

“Just Human” & “Still Human” by Kerry Heavens – I was so lucky to win these books and the reviews are fab!

“Playing With Her Heart” by Lauren Blakely – I am fast becoming a fan of this author’s work and I have been told that this is one of her best books.

“Stubborn Love” by Natalie Ward – The companion novel to “I Love You To Death” which is one of my all-time-favourites.

“A Little Too Far” by Lisa Desrochers – I love a good book with a taboo love story and this one has two!

“Consequences“, “Truth” and “Convicted” by Aleatha Romig – I am prepared to get my mind blown away and am glad I bought the books once all three became available.

“Stripped” by Jasinda Wilder – I am guessing I will be in need of a sweet romance after having read the above books so that is why this one is back on my list.

“Tease” by Missy Johnson

Male escort.

That got your attention.

Some of the most powerful and well known women in the country pay to have sex
with me, some of them married. Some are into more than just straight sex, which
is why they call me. Bondage, power play, submission…nothing is off the table.
I will do anything for the right price.

The stories I could tell you about a certain high profile congresswoman, or
that innocent blonde actress. Trust me, she’s not so innocent.

Guys would kill for my job. I’m living the fucking dream. Meaningless sex, no
relationship hang-ups and I’m rolling in the dough. Life is perfect, just the
way it is.

Until I meet her.

She changes everything.

She makes me want more than I’ve ever wanted for myself and she believes in me.
But she also thinks I sell insurance. I can’t stop what I do, but I can’t give
her up.

Eventually, my two worlds are going to collide and when they do, shit will hit
the fan.

My Review

ARC received by the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a HOT, yet sweet romance, I definitely recommend that you pick up this book. It is a quick read, has some funny moments, and it is great reading a book solely from the male’s POV.

Meet Liam Cooper (Coop): he is a male escort with some very high-profile clients and it would be wrong to say that he does not enjoy his job even though he came about it almost by accident. And, let us face it, which 26-year-old man would not enjoy this line of work? His services are ALMOST unlimited and he has tried just about anything. Coop does, however, admit to the fact that he sometimes misses being in a relationship:

“The truth was, I did miss the intimacy that having a girlfriend brought with it. Sex was one thing, but the emotions you feel when you give yourself to someone you truly love is on a whole other scale.”

And it is not as if Coop has never had this: he has actually been married and is divorced. True, he loved the girl, but the fact of the matter is that they only married each other because she got pregnant. They were only 18 at the time, oblivious to the fact that it takes a lot of hard work making a marriage work. When they lost the baby, they drifted apart and Coop caught Kara, his ex wife, in bed with his best friend, Max. Needless to say, it hurt like hell, and Coop dealt with the pain like most 20-year-old: he partied, drank and had sex with random strangers. One day, one of his professors seduced him, then actually paid for his services and thus began his escorting career.

The only reason Coop is still an escort many years later is that his mother has Alzheimers and he wants to make sure that she has the best care money can buy. Granted, it is a strange way to go about it, but it makes sense in a way: who would not do whatever they could if a loved one was extremely ill? I must admire the way Coop has his double life organized: he has two phones, two bank accounts, and does everything in his power to keep people from finding out how he makes a living. But I cannot help but think that it must be very exhausting for him to maintain his image, wearing a mask all the time.

“The real me? Well, that’s someone not many people got to meet. The real Coop was generous, funny – and modest too – and will do anything for his friends and family. I hated feeling vulnerable, which is why it was easier to create an alter ego who was all the things I wasn’t.”

Coop keeps his weekends sex-free and that is when he spends a lot of time with this sister, her husband and her children. They also meet every year at the family cabin, which is when he sees Mia, his crush from when he was 15 years old. When he sees her again, all his old feelings for her resurface, and he is drawn to her once again. Mia has moved back to New York, is divorced and has yet to find a place to live – when Nicole, his sister, learns this, she offers Mia to live with Coop until she finds her own place! He does not know how to refuse and if he has to be completely honest, he does not really want to.

Right, you can almost guess how much more important it becomes for Coop to keep his job as an escort a secret. The more time he spends with Mia, the more he falls for her all over again, and he feels so conflicted about the whole situation.

Okay, I am a bit conflicted about this book…On one hand, I did enjoy it, I loved the voice of Coop, and the sex scenes are off the charts HOT! Seriously, very well written and you will definitely get the tingles while reading it. In fact, in generel I like the author’s writing style, it is practically flawless. Coop is a really great character: very sweet, confident and the self-appointed protector of the family. I like everything about him, and I like how the author portrays his feelings throughout the book.

But on the other hand, I felt that the story was a bit predictable at times – there were no real surprises, and I feel that the ending was too rushed.  I liked the story but I did not love it and I do not think I will read it again. Having said that, I still recommend that you pick up this book if you are after a quick, steamy read, and it is not the last time I will read a book written by Miss Johnson.
